Beyond cholesterol reduction, the pleiotropic effects of statins: is their use in cancer prevention hype or hope?

2013

ISSN 1758-4299 10.2217/CLP.13.29 © 2013 Future Medicine Ltd Clin. Lipidol. (2013) 8(3), 273–277 Pleiotropic effects of statins Millions of patients worldwide are currently tak ing prescribed statins. Clinical trials have dem onstrated that statins reduce the risk of cardio vascular disease [1]. Statins are well known to reduce cholesterol levels through the inhibition of 3hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA reductase [2]. However, great interest has recently been paid to the mechanisms beyond cholesterol reduc tion (pleiotropic effects) by which statins exert their action. Indeed, statins are associated with plaque stabilization and improvement of endo thelial function, as well as antiinflamm…

Genome-wide analysis reveals the patterns of genetic diversity and population structure of 8 Italian local chicken breeds

2021

The aim of this study was to conduct a genome-wide comparative analysis of 8 local Italian chicken breeds (Ermellinata di Rovigo, Millefiori di Lonigo [PML], Polverara Bianca, Polverara Nera, Padovana, Pepoi [PPP], Robusta Lionata, and Robusta Maculata), all under a conservation plan, to understand their genetic diversity and population structure. A total of 152 animals were analyzed using the Affymetrix Axiom 600 K Chicken Genotyping Array. The levels of genetic diversity were highest and lowest in PML and PPP, respectively. The results of genomic inbreeding based on runs of homozygosity (ROH; FROH) showed marked differences among breeds and ranged from 0.161 (PML) to 0.478 (PPP). Furtherm…

The complex modulation of lysosomal degradation pathways by cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2

2015

The two main receptors of the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoid receptors 1 (CB1R) and 2 (CB2R), were described in the early 1990s. Since then, different physiological functions have been revealed that are linked to the activity of these two G-protein-coupled receptors. CB1R and CB2R activities influence signal cascades, which are known to play a role in the regulation of the cellular "self-digestion" process called autophagy. A variety of these signaling pathways are integrated by the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) that acts as an inhibitor of autophagy. Others, like AMP-activated protein kinase dependent signaling pathway, are able to bypass mTORC1 to modulate the auto…

A global Canopy Water Content product from AVHRR/Metop

2020

Abstract Spatially and temporally explicit canopy water content (CWC) data are important for monitoring vegetation status, and constitute essential information for studying ecosystem-climate interactions. Despite many efforts there is currently no operational CWC product available to users. In the context of the Satellite Application Facility for Land Surface Analysis (LSA-SAF), we have developed an algorithm to produce a global dataset of CWC based on data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor on board Meteorological–Operational (MetOp) satellites forming the EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS). CWC reflects the water conditions at the leaf level and information related …

Estimation of volume fraction and gravimetric moisture of winter wheat based on microwave attenuation: a field scale study

2019

A considerable amount of water can be stored in vegetation, especially in regions experiencing large quantities of precipitation (mid-latitudes). In this context, an accurate estimate of the actual water status of the vegetation could lead to an improved understanding of the effect of plant water on the water budget. In this study, we developed and validated a novel approach to retrieve the vegetation volume fraction (δ) (i.e., volume percentage of solid plant material of a canopy in air) and the gravimetric vegetation water content (m g ) (i.e., amount of water per wet biomass) for winter wheat. The estimation was based on the attenuation of L-band microwave measurements through vegetation…

A novel cell model to study the function of the adrenoleukodystrophy-related protein

2006

X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a neurodegenerative disorder due to mutations in the ABCD1 (ALD) gene. ALDRP, the closest homolog of ALDP, has been shown to have partial functional redundancy with ALDP and, when overexpressed, can compensate for the loss-of-function of ALDP. In order to characterize the function of ALDRP and to understand the phenomenon of gene redundancy, we have developed a novel system that allows the controlled expression of the ALDRP-EGFP fusion protein (normal or non-functional mutated ALDRP) using the Tet-On system in H4IIEC3 rat hepatoma cells. The generated stable cell lines express negligible levels of endogenous ALDRP and doxycycline dosage-dependent lev…

Inverse estimation of terminal connections in the cardiac conduction system

2017

Modeling the cardiac conduction system is a challenging problem in the context of computational cardiac electrophysiology. Its ventricular section, the Purkinje system, is responsible for triggering tissue electrical activation at discrete terminal locations, which subsequently spreads throughout the ventricles. In this paper, we present an algorithm that is capable of estimating the location of the Purkinje system triggering points from a set of random measurements on tissue. We present the properties and the performance of the algorithm under controlled synthetic scenarios. Results show that the method is capable of locating most of the triggering points in scenarios with a fair ratio bet…

Educational innovation in basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation in pediatrics and neonatology in a realistic context

2018

2005

French sociology denounces vehemently since the end of the 1960s the important and standing social inequalities both in the access to the different levels of education and in school success stricto sensu. Such criticism has taken the form of a general theory put forward by Bourdieu and Passeron, in which such social inequalities are shown to be the necessary result of the functioning of the school institution. And this thesis, hugely influential not just among sociologists, but also more widely, has contributed to foster certain fatalism, since it establishes that the very function of school is to reproduce and legitimize the social inequalities. On the other hand, it has also produced a co…

Algunas reflexiones acerca de la stjue de 9 de julio de 2020 sobre los pactos novatorios en materia de cláusulas suelo

2021

The Sentence of the Court of Justice of the European Union of July 9, 2020 comes to answer the five questions that, in its preliminary question, the Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 3 of Teruel asks about the validity of the new agreements in the context of the floor clauses, establishing jurisprudential doctrine on this matter about which our Supreme Court had previously ruled in its Judgments of October 16, 2017, in the sense of considering the agreed floor clause null as a consequence of the novation agreement and, subsequently, those of April 11, 2018 and September 13, 2018 in the opposite direction, declaring that the novation agreement was valid. It is a long-awaited and in…
