Sterols and steroids, like the terpenes and carotinoids, are isoprene derivatives. The sterols are components of the membranes of all eukaryotic cells and they bind and condense the phospholipid bilayer. The outer cell membrane is particularly rich in sterols, with a molar ratio of sterols to phospholipids of 0.8–0.1, compared with the usual value of 0.1–0.3 for intracellular membranes. The parent substance of all sterols is cholesterol (Fig. 16.1). Ground and excited state polarizabilities and dipole transition properties of benzene from coupled cluster response theory

Abstract The electronic properties and transition properties have been investigated for the lowest singlet electronic states of benzene using coupled cluster response theory. The polarizabilities have been calculated for the ground state and the 1 1 B 2u , 1 1 B 1u 1 1 E 1u and 2 1 E 1u excited states. The dipole allowed transitions out of these states have also been calculated and discussed in the context of the calculated polarizabilities. We describe the crystal structures of two bimetallic compounds with the malonate and an exo-polydentate N-donor ligand {[Cu(tren)]4[Cr2(mal)4(OH)2]}(ClO4)4·8H2O (3) and [Ni(Htren)2][Cr2(mal)4(OH)2]·8H2O (4) which are prepared from the dinuclear K4[Cr2(mal)4(OH)2]·6H2O precursor (2) [tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and H2mal = malonic acid]. Their crystal packing and supramolecular structures are analyzed in the context of the influence of the dichromium(III) [Cr2(mal)4(OH)2]4− unit, which acts as a building-block. Hybrid Materials Formed by Two Molecular Networks. Towards Multiproperty Materials

Abstract The possibilities offered by hybrid materials formed by two molecular networks in the context of the molecular magnets are illustrated. Molecule-based layered magnets are used as anionic hosts for electroactive molecules, with the aim of obtaining multiproperty materials exhibiting in addition to the cooperative magnetism other interesting properties according to the nature of the inserted molecules. In particular, hybrid molecular compounds containing molecular species giving rise to paramagnetic, conducting, or bi-stable properties are reported.

The possibilities offered by hybrid functional materials formed by two molecular networks in the context of crystal engineering are illustrated with two different examples: (i) hybrid magnets constructed from combination of an extended ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic inorganic network, with a molecular paramagnetic metal complex acting as template. (ii) Hybrid organic–inorganic compounds combining an organic π-electron donor network that furnishes the pathway for electronic conductivity, with inorganic metal complexes that act as structural and/or magnetic components. On the basis of the industrial interest of the oxovanadium phosphate catalysts, current research effort in this field is focused mainly on the development of synthetic strategies directed towards obtaining open-framework materials. There is a growing body of work describing preparations using hydrothermal procedures under a diversity of conditions. A great number of new solids, whose nets range from lamellar arrays to micro- and mesostructured organizations, has been prepared in last years. In this context, the applicability of concepts and procedures from the zeolites chemistry to systems involving transition elements is critically analyzed.

Intimate male partner violence against women has been recognized as an important public health problem, with a high impact on women’s mental health, including depressive and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, fathers who have been involved in intimate partner violence (IPV) have an increased probability of being violent toward their children. The aim of this study was to assess the relation between the mental health status of abused women, their partner’s violence toward the children, and their maternal behavior.
Poly-Victimization in Polish Adolescents: Risk Factors and the Moderating Role of Coping.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of poly-victimization in Polish adolescents and assess factors associated with poly-victimization risk across different ecological levels. This study further examined whether coping styles could moderate the impact of poly-victimization on emotional well-being. Participants were 454 adolescents, aged between 13 and 19 years, from an urban region of Poland. Adolescents completed self-report measures assessing community, school, and family risks, along with a peer nomination task measuring social preference.
