A GPU-Based DVC to H.264/AVC Transcoder

2010

Mobile to mobile video conferencing is one of the services that the newest mobile network operators can offer to users With the apparition of the distributed video coding paradigm which moves the majority of complexity from the encoder to the decoder, this offering can be achieved by introducing a transcoder This device has to convert from the distributed video coding paradigm to traditional video coding such as H.264/AVC which is formed by simpler decoders and more complex encoders, and allows to the users to execute only the low complex algorithms In order to deal with this high complex video transcoder, this paper introduces a graphics processing unit based transcoder as base station The…

Hypervisor-assisted dynamic malware analysis

2021

AbstractMalware analysis is a task of utmost importance in cyber-security. Two approaches exist for malware analysis: static and dynamic. Modern malware uses an abundance of techniques to evade both dynamic and static analysis tools. Current dynamic analysis solutions either make modifications to the running malware or use a higher privilege component that does the actual analysis. The former can be easily detected by sophisticated malware while the latter often induces a significant performance overhead. We propose a method that performs malware analysis within the context of the OS itself. Furthermore, the analysis component is camouflaged by a hypervisor, which makes it completely transp…

Validating retinal fundus image analysis algorithms: issues and a proposal.

2013

This paper concerns the validation of automatic retinal image analysis (ARIA) algorithms. For reasons of space and consistency, we concentrate on the validation of algorithms processing color fundus camera images, currently the largest section of the ARIA literature. We sketch the context (imaging instruments and target tasks) of ARIA validation, summarizing the main image analysis and validation techniques. We then present a list of recommendations focusing on the creation of large repositories of test data created by international consortia, easily accessible via moderated Web sites, including multicenter annotations by multiple experts, specific to clinical tasks, and capable of running …

A new approach to partial discharge detection under DC voltage

2018

The continuing development of HVDC power transmission systems presents many problems related to evaluation of the reliability of power system assets [1]-[5]. In this context the identification of insulation defects plays a key role in preventing unexpected failures of electrical components. Partial discharge (PD) measurement is a useful approach to assessing the condition of HV power apparatus and cables. Such measurements are also widely employed for HVAC systems. The inception mechanisms of PD in AC systems are well-known, and measurements are usually performed following the IEC 60270 standard [6]. PD measurements under DC voltage present complexities related to the nature of the phenomen…

Optimizing Kernel Ridge Regression for Remote Sensing Problems

2018

Kernel methods have been very successful in remote sensing problems because of their ability to deal with high dimensional non-linear data. However, they are computationally expensive to train when a large amount of samples are used. In this context, while the amount of available remote sensing data has constantly increased, the size of training sets in kernel methods is usually restricted to few thousand samples. In this work, we modified the kernel ridge regression (KRR) training procedure to deal with large scale datasets. In addition, the basis functions in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space are defined as parameters to be also optimized during the training process. This extends the n…

Capabilities and Affordances in the ICT4D Context

2019

Part 1: Pushing the Boundaries - New Research Methods, Theory and Philosophy in ICT4D; International audience; The paper examines two concepts that have been frequently used in Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D) research, capabilities and affordance. We seek to delineate their similarities, their differences, and their accurate application in ICT4D. Both concepts connote a space of opportunities, both are relational between artefact and human agency when applied in ICT4D, and both entail potential rather than actualisation of possibilities. By comparing the two at some length, we hope to generate a more refined understanding of both capabilities and affordan…

Hierarchical modeling for rare event detection and cell subset alignment across flow cytometry samples.

2013

Flow cytometry is the prototypical assay for multi-parameter single cell analysis, and is essential in vaccine and biomarker research for the enumeration of antigen-specific lymphocytes that are often found in extremely low frequencies (0.1% or less). Standard analysis of flow cytometry data relies on visual identification of cell subsets by experts, a process that is subjective and often difficult to reproduce. An alternative and more objective approach is the use of statistical models to identify cell subsets of interest in an automated fashion. Two specific challenges for automated analysis are to detect extremely low frequency event subsets without biasing the estimate by pre-processing…

Modélisation du contexte des lexies spécialisées en vue de l’élaboration d’un système d’aide à la rédaction scientifique dans le domaine biomédical

2018

Abstract In this paper we propose a modeling of contextual information around a terminological unit, for the needs of a scientific writing aid tool in the biomedical field. We focus more specifically on the modeling of significant phraseic contexts that we formalize as semantically characterized argument patterns. This modeling is based on a large corpus of biomedical scientific articles and relay on semantic types specified in a domain ontology, Unified Medical Language System . Resume Dans cet article nous proposons une modelisation de l’information contextuelle autour des lexies specialisees en vue de l’elaboration d’un systeme d’aide a la redaction scientifique dans le domaine biomedica…

Touch or touchless?:Evaluating usability of interactive displays for persons with autistic spectrum disorders

2019

Interactive public displays have been exploited and studied for engaging interaction in several previous studies. In this context, applications have been focused on supporting learning or entertainment activities, specifically designed for people with special needs. This includes, for example, those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In this paper, we present a comparison study aimed at understanding the difference in terms of usability, effectiveness, and enjoyment perceived by users with ASD between two interaction modalities usually supported by interactive displays: touch-based and touchless gestural interaction. We present the outcomes of a within-subject setup involving 8 ASD users…

CSCL for NGO's Cross cultural Virtual Teams in Africa: An Ethiopian Children Advocacy Case Study against Exclusion and toward Facilitation of Express…

2005

This exploratory pilot study shows that NGO's involved in Children Advocacy through Arts in Africa are willing to use a groupware, meaning a computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment. Innovative ideas and best practices among NGOs would be shared easily worldwide. Little scientific information is available to help them make a sound choice. This study suggests that some NGOs based in Ethiopia/Africa have specific needs which should translate in specific context analysis and interface development: 1) an intercultural approach to creativity, arts and innovation, and 2) emphasis should be placed on tools to facilitate asynchronous systematic conception and sharing of intra an…
