A multi-process system for HEp-2 cells classification based on SVM
2016
An automatic system for pre-segmented IIF images analysis was developed.A non-standard pipeline for supervised image classification was adopted. The system uses a two-level pyramid to retain some spatial information. From each cell image 216 features are extracted.15 SVM classifiers one-against-one have been implemented. This study addresses the classification problem of the HEp-2 cells using indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) image analysis, which can indicate the presence of autoimmune diseases by finding antibodies in the patient serum. Recently, studies have shown that it is possible to identify the cell patterns using IIF image analysis and machine learning techniques. In this paper we de…
Statistical Methods for the Geographical Analysis of Rare Diseases
2010
In this chapter we provide a summary of different methods for the detection of disease clusters. First of all, we give a summary of methods for computing estimates of the relative risk. These estimates provide smoothed values of the relative risks that can account for its spatial variation. Some methods for assessing spatial autocorrelation and general clustering are also discussed to test for significant spatial variation of the risk. In order to find the actual location of the clusters, scan methods are introduced. The spatial scan statistic is discussed as well as its extension by means of Generalised Linear Models that allows for the inclusion of covariates and cluster effects. In this …
Energy-Efficient Context-Aware Resource Allocation for Edge-Computing-Empowered Industrial IoT
2020
Edge computing provides a promising paradigm to support the implementation of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) by offloading computational-intensive tasks from resource-limited machine-type devices (MTDs) to powerful edge servers. However, the performance gain of edge computing may be severely compromised due to limited spectrum resources, capacity-constrained batteries, and context unawareness. In this chapter, we consider the optimization of channel selection which is critical for efficient and reliable task delivery. We aim at maximizing the long-term throughput subject to long-term constraints of energy budget and service reliability. We propose a learning-based channel selection fr…
Context-Aware RF-Energy Harvesting for IoT Networks
2021
Energy Harvesting plays a crucial role in improving the operational lifetime of IoT devices. The deployment of dedicated RF-transmitters helps in sufficient energy propagation to the sensor nodes of IoT networks. Also, energy harvesting using the deployment of such RF-transmitters is a challenging issue. In this work, two methods are proposed for the optimal placement of RF-transmitters for efficient energy harvesting in wireless sensor networks. The proposed context-aware RF-energy harvesting considers different network performance parameters such as energy-hole information, and data routing information. RF-transmitter deployment is achieved using network connectivity information in the fi…
Toward morphological thoracic EIT: major signal sources correspond to respective organ locations in CT.
2012
Lung and cardiovascular monitoring applications of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) require localization of relevant functional structures or organs of interest within the reconstructed images. We describe an algorithm for automatic detection of heart and lung regions in a time series of EIT images. Using EIT reconstruction based on anatomical models, candidate regions are identified in the frequency domain and image-based classification techniques applied. The algorithm was validated on a set of simultaneously recorded EIT and CT data in pigs. In all cases, identified regions in EIT images corresponded to those manually segmented in the matched CT image. Results demonstrate the abilit…
Grammars++ for modelling information in text
1999
Abstract Grammars provide a convenient means to describe the set of valid instances in a text database. Flexibility in choosing a grammar can be exploited to provide information modelling capability by designing productions in the grammar to represent entities and relationships of interest to database applications. Additional constraints can be specified by attaching predicates to selected nonterminals in the grammar. When used for database definition, grammars can provide the functionality that users have come to expect of database schemas. Extended grammars can also be used to specify database manipulation, including query, update, view definition, and index specification.
Low invasive multisensor acquisition system for real-time monitoring of cardiovascular and respiratory parameters
2020
The recent advances in multiparametric monitoring of biosignals and management of big data prompt for the development of devices and techniques for the extraction of indicators with physiological relevance. In this context, we have designed and realized a portable electronic system, equipped with simple biomedical sensors, able to synchronously record multiple electrocardiographic (ECG), photoplethysmographic (PPG) and breathing signals, for carrying out a non-invasive monitoring of several cardiovascular parameters. In this work, we show the results of preliminary measurements performed following a specific physiological protocol (i.e., deep breathing with 10 s per cycle). The system allow…
Does Regression Discontinuity Design Work? Evidence from Random Election Outcomes
2014
We use data for 198121 candidates and 1351 random election outcomes to estimate the effect of incumbency status on future electoral success. We find no evidence of incumbency advantage using data on randomized elections. In contrast, regression discontinuity design, using optimal bandwidths, produces a positive and significant incumbency effect. Using even narrower bandwidths aligns the results with those obtained using the randomized elections. So does the bias-correction of Calonico et al. (forthcoming). Standard validity tests are not useful in detecting the problems with the optimal bandwidths. The appropriate bandwidth seems narrower in larger elections and is thus context specific.
An improvement of NFC-SEC with signed exchanges for an e-prescription-based application
2013
International audience; In the context of an aging population, drug intake can be a potential source of errors leading to death in some cases. Almost all of these errors are unintentional and come from incorrect prescriptions, unsuitable dosages for the patient or incompatibility with other treatments. To limit these risks which are especially important in the elderly or pre-dependency, we propose a secure system for drug treatment through the NFC (Near Field Communication) contact-less communication technology. The proposed system provides security mechanisms such as integrity, authentication, encryption and non-repudiation. To ensure this security, an extension of the international standa…
From fractal urban pattern analysis to fractal urban planning concepts
2014
International audience; Fractal geometry can be used to develop a multiscale approach toinvestigate the spatial organization of urban fabrics. First, the concepts behindfractal reference models are introduced so as to provide a better understandingof the results obtained from empirical analyses of urban patterns. Then, differentmethods for conducting fractal analyses are presented and the results obtained forurban patterns are discussed. It turns out that, despite their irregular appearance, urban patterns are often organized by an inherent fractal order principle, at leastacross a certain range of scales. More detailed analysis of the findings reveals linksbetween these fractal properties a…
