Interaction between turbulent structures and particles in roughened channel
2016
Abstract The distribution of inertial particles in turbulent flows is highly non-uniform and is driven by the local dynamics of the turbulent structures of the underlying carrier flow field. In the specific context of dilute particle-laden wall-bounded flows, deposition and resuspension mechanisms are dominated by the interaction between inertial particles and coherent turbulent structures characteristic of the wall region. The macroscopic behavior of these two-phase systems is influenced by particle inertia, which plays a role at the microscale of a single dispersed element. These turbulent structures, which control the turbulent regeneration cycles, are strongly affected by the wall rough…
Energy-related optimal control accounts for gravitational load: comparing shoulder, elbow, and wrist rotations.
2013
International audience; Gaveau J, Berret B, Demougeot L, Fadiga L, Pozzo T, Papaxanthis C. Energy-related optimal control accounts for gravitational load: comparing shoulder, elbow, and wrist rotations. J Neurophysiol 111: 4-16, 2014. First published October 16, 2013; doi: 10.1152/jn.01029.2012.-We permanently deal with gravity force. Experimental evidences revealed that moving against gravity strongly differs from moving along the gravity vector. This directional asymmetry has been attributed to an optimal planning process that optimizes gravity force effects to minimize energy. Yet, only few studies have considered the case of vertical movements in the context of optimal control. What kin…
FRIPON: a worldwide network to track incoming meteoroids
2020
Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receiver…
Condition Monitoring Technologies for Synthetic Fiber Ropes - a Review
2020
This paper presents a review of different condition monitoring technologies for fiber ropes. Specifically, it presents an overview of the articles and patents on the subject, ranging from the early 70’s up until today with the state of the art. Experimental results are also included and discussed in a conditionmonitoring context, where failuremechanisms and changes in physical parameters give improved insight into the degradation process of fiber ropes. From this review, it is found that automatic width measurement has received surprisingly little attention, and might be a future direction for the development of a continuous condition monitoring system for synthetic fiber ropes.
Coordinated Interpersonal Behaviour in Collective Dance Improvisation: The Aesthetics of Kinaesthetic Togetherness
2018
International audience; Collective dance improvisation (e.g., traditional and social dancing, contact improvisation) is a participatory, relational and embodied art form which eschews standard concepts in aesthetics. We present our ongoing research into the mechanisms underlying the lived experience of "togetherness" associated with such practices. Togetherness in collective dance improvisation is kinaesthetic (based on movement and its perception), and so can be simultaneously addressed from the perspective of the performers and the spectators, and be measured. We utilise these multiple levels of description: the first-person, phenomenological level of personal experiences, the third-perso…
Bodily Flashes of Dancing Women: Dance as a Method of Inquiry
2003
In May 1997 I was in Nicaragua researching a dance ritual known as May Pole. The act of dancing itself became a method of inquiry in my research process. This article concentrates on the interaction of two dancing women, Evelyn and me. My dance experience has acquired different interpretations in relation to time and context as I have reflected on it. I also enrich this experience with other dance experiences to explore my dancing body in its different forms. This hermeneutical starting point creates the conditions for trusting my instrument, my body, as a source of bodily knowledge.
Tourism in the European economic crisis: Mediatised worldmaking and new tourist imaginaries in Greece
2016
The article interrogates the rationale and origins of changing imaginaries of tourism in Greece in the context of the current economic crisis. We detect a radical change in the ‘picture’ of the country that circulates in global media conduits (YouTube, Facebook, official press websites and personal blogs). We enact a journey into past media representations of Greece as an idyllic peasant and working-class site, but proceed to highlight that such representations are being recycled today by Greeks (especially but not exclusively) living and studying abroad. This stereotype, which focuses on embodied understandings of happiness and well-being, is being challenged by the current economic crisi…
Medical Data Processing and Analysis for Remote Health and Activities Monitoring
2019
Recent developments in sensor technology, wearable computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and wireless communication have given rise to research in ubiquitous healthcare and remote monitoring of human’s health and activities. Health monitoring systems involve processing and analysis of data retrieved from smartphones, smart watches, smart bracelets, as well as various sensors and wearable devices. Such systems enable continuous monitoring of patients psychological and health conditions by sensing and transmitting measurements such as heart rate, electrocardiogram, body temperature, respiratory rate, chest sounds, or blood pressure. Pervasive healthcare, as a relevant application domain in thi…
High-Level Context Information for Tasks in Teaching
2017
Tasks are often used in the teaching process. Using mobile and wearable technology, we created an application which uses sensors to support teachers in creating tasks with dependencies and feedback generation. However, in the field of sports education, a variety of non-measurable data can influence the training progress. This high-level context data can be gathered using human input. In this paper, we explain the task-based teacher supporting application and how it can be enriched with high-level context data. We use gamification for data collection and motivation of students. We conducted a survey about the acceptance of three different approaches in the field of skiing education. The surv…
