Detector for monitoring potential bleeding during electron intraoperative radiotherapy

Purpose: The aim of this work is to develop a bleeding detector integrated into the acrylic circular applicators for specific mobile linacs. Thus, a bleeding detector has been developed based on a capacitive sensor to be used with plastic applicators, as in the case of LIAC HWL from Sordina IORT Technologies SpA. This paper introduces technical solutions devised to support the Deployment Site - Regione Emilia Romagna (DS-RER) of the ACTIVAGE project. The ACTIVAGE project aims at promoting IoT (Internet of Things)-based solutions for Active and Healthy ageing. DS-RER focuses on improving continuity of care for older adults (65+) suffering from aftereffects of a stroke event. Continuous monitoring of mixed venous oxygen saturation in infants after cardiac surgery

Continuous mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2c) was measured in 16 infants immediately after cardiac surgery. A polyurethane 4F, dual channel catheter (Opticath, Modell U440, Oximetrix) with fiberoptic filaments was introduced into the pulmonary artery during cardiothoracic surgery. The catheters were left in place for an average of 67.5 h (range 27 h -125 h) and there were no catheter-related complications. Correlation between continuous in vivo SvO2 values and in vitro values was satisfactory (r = 0.85), whereas a correlation between SvO2c and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) was not found (r = 0.07). Monitoring of cortical blood flow: Clinical relevance of experimental laser Doppler studies

Continuous monitoring of cortical blood flow provides real time information of CBF-changes during neurosurgical operations and on the neurointensive care unit. Laser Doppler flowmetry is a continuous, noninvasive technique suitable for measurement of the cortical microcirculation. In a number of experimental studies we have analyzed the characteristics of this method for cortical blood flow monitoring. The high spatial resolution of laser Doppler flowmetry and the heterogeneity of the cortical microvascular network results in a scatter of flow values over a wide range depending on the site of measurement. Noninvasive monitoring of polymer curing reactions by dielectrometry

A microwave sensor system for the noninvasive monitoring of the curing process of a thermoset material placed inside a metallic mold is described. The microwave sensor is designed as an open-ended coaxial resonator with a curved surface adapted to the mold inner shape. The analysis of the microwave resonator comprises a recently developed method for deembedding the effect of coupling network in overcoupled resonators, so the range of permitted measurements encompass both low and high dielectric losses of polymeric materials. Human body sensing: A pervasive approach by implanted RFID tags

Starting from the physical evidence that passive RFID systems may be used as self-sensing devices, the feasibility of human monitoring by means of implanted tags is here investigated. The key parameters to master with the purpose to enhance the sensitivity of the implanted radiosensor have been theoretically analyzed and numerically applied to a specific medical problem, i.e. the continuous monitoring of liver cancer evolution. Preliminary experimental results with simplified phantoms corroborate the analysis.

Monitoring displacements of an earthen dam using GNSS and remote sensing

This paper shows the results of a scientific research in which a GNSS continuous monitoring system for earth-dam deformations has been developed, then, deformations have been related with reservoir water surface and level. The experiment was conducted near Bivona (Sicily, Italy), on the Castello dam (Magazzolo Lake). On the top of the dam three control points were placed and three GNSS permanent stations were installed. Network design for surface water quality monitoring in a road construction project using Gamma Test theory

Road construction has a negative environmental impact on the surrounding aquatic environment, requiring the continuous monitoring of surface water quality. Here, optimization of the water quality monitoring network (WQMN) is an essential step in supporting the sustainable development of road construction projects. This study introduces Gamma Test theory (GTT) as a practical method for optimizing the WQMN of surface waters during road construction.
