Continuous design control for machine learning in certified medical systems

2022

AbstractContinuous software engineering has become commonplace in numerous fields. However, in regulating intensive sectors, where additional concerns need to be taken into account, it is often considered difficult to apply continuous development approaches, such as devops. In this paper, we present an approach for using pull requests as design controls, and apply this approach to machine learning in certified medical systems leveraging model cards, a novel technique developed to add explainability to machine learning systems, as a regulatory audit trail. The approach is demonstrated with an industrial system that we have used previously to show how medical systems can be developed in a con…

High-quality optical pulse train generator based on solitons on finite background

2013

International audience; We report a simple method to exploit the typical properties of solitons on finite background in order to generate high repetition rate and high quality optical pulse trains. We take advantage of the nonlinear evolution of a modulated continuous wave towards localized structures upon a nonzero background wave in anomalous dispersive fiber. After a stage of nonlinear compression, a delay-line interferometer enables the annihilation of the finite background and simultaneously allows the repetition rate doubling of the pulse train.

Silent and symptomatic atrial fibrillation, during the acute phase of myocardial infarction : determinants and role of arginine methylated and oxidati…

2015

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a frequent complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with a poorer prognosis. Silent atrial fibrillation has been suggested to be frequent after AMI. However, most part of the studies has targeted only paroxysmal or persistent AF. Thus, Reduced Nitric Oxide availability and endothelial dysfunction has been recently recognized as a possible contributor to altered prognosis in AF. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) can inhibit nitric oxide synthase and leads to endothelial dysfunction, inflammation and oxidative stress in multiple cardiovascular diseases. However, any study has addressed the relationship between ADMA levels and the occurrence of AF in AMI.W…

Full- and reduced-order filter design for discrete-time T-S fuzzy systems with time-varying delay

2012

This paper is focused on the problem of ℋ ∞ filtering for a class of discrete-time T-S fuzzy time-varying delay systems. Our interest is how to design full- and reduced-order filters that guarantee the filtering error system to be asymptotically stable with a prescribed ℋ ∞ performance. Sufficient conditions for the obtained filtering error system are proposed by applying an input-output approach and a two-term approximation method, which is employed to approximate the time-varying delay. The corresponding full and reduced-order filter design is cast into a convex optimization problem, which can be efficiently solved by standard numerical algorithms.

Study of aerobic granular sludge stability in a continuous-flow membrane bioreactor.

2015

A granular continuous-flow membrane bioreactor with a novel hydrodynamic configuration was developed to evaluate the stability of aerobic granular sludge (AGS). Under continuous-flow operation (Period I), AGS rapidly lost their structural integrity resulting in loose and fluffy microbial aggregates in which filamentous bacteria were dominant. The intermittent feeding (Period II) allowed obtaining the succession of feast and famine conditions that favored the increase in AGS stability. Although no further breakage occurred, the formation of new granules was very limited, owing to the absence of the hydraulic selection pressure. These results noted the necessity to ensure, on the one hand the…

Floquet spectrum for two-level systems in quasiperiodic time-dependent fields

1992

We study the time evolution ofN-level quantum systems under quasiperiodic time-dependent perturbations. The problem is formulated in terms of the spectral properties of a quasienergy operator defined in an enlarged Hilbert space, or equivalently of a generalized Floquet operator. We discuss criteria for the appearance of pure point as well as continuous spectrum, corresponding respectively to stable quasiperiodic dynamics and to unstable chaotic behavior. We discuss two types of mechanisms that lead to instability. The first one is due to near resonances, while the second one is of topological nature and can be present for arbitrary ratios between the frequencies of the perturbation. We tre…

The closed form of the second-order energy shift for the discrete spectrum of atomic hydrogen

2004

The closed form of the second-order energy shift for the discrete spectrum of atomic hydrogen is obtained, which allows us to evaluate the level shift in both cases, when the intermediate states are in continuum and in the discrete spectrum, except the resonances. The values of the second-order shift of the energy of the ground state calculated by us are in good agreement with those obtained by us and other authors using the nonperturbative Floquet method in average up to a radiation intensity of 1015 W cm−2.

Active mixing inside double emulsion segments in continuous flow

2015

Fast mixing is essential for many microfluidic applications, especially for flow at low Reynolds numbers. A capillary tube-in-tube coaxial flow setup in combination with a glass microreactor was used to produce immiscible multiphase segments. These double emulsion segments are composed of an organic solvent as the shell (outer) phase and a completely fluorinated liquid (Fluorinert® FC-40) as the core (inner) phase. Due to the higher density of the core droplets, they are responsive to changing their position to the force of gravity (g-force). By gently shaking or jiggling the reactor, the core drop flows very fast in the direction of the g-field without leaving the shell organic phase segme…

Continuous experimentation on artificial intelligence software : a research agenda

2020

Moving from experiments to industrial level AI software development requires a shift from understanding AI/ ML model attributes as a standalone experiment to know-how integrating and operating AI models in a large-scale software system. It is a growing demand for adopting state-of-the-art software engineering paradigms into AI development, so that the development efforts can be aligned with business strategies in a lean and fast-paced manner. We describe AI development as an “unknown unknown” problem where both business needs and AI models evolve over time. We describe a holistic view of an iterative, continuous approach to develop industrial AI software basing on business goals, requiremen…
