Treatment options in obstructive sleep apnea

2022

AbstractTreatment of OSA with CPAP is currently the recommended treatment and has the greatest evidence of efficacy on AHI, symptoms and comorbidities. Symptomatic patients with moderate-severe OSA generally have good adherence to CPAP therapy, while those with mild OSA, female, young and generally paucisymptomatic, have lower CPAP adherence, especially in the medium and long term. The recent identification of different clinical and pathophysiological phenotypes of OSA has paved the way for alternative treatments to CPAP, leading to an increasingly personalized therapy. Weight loss and lifestyle modifications are highly recommended in all obese or overweight patients. Mandibular advancement…

Screening of microalgae and LED grow light spectra for effective removal of dissolved nutrients from cold-water recirculating aquaculture system (RAS…

2019

Popularity of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) is increasing. Because of the high water recirculation rate, dissolved nutrients originating from fish feed are concentrated enough in RAS wastewater (WW) to enable growth of primary producers, e.g. microalgae. This study evaluated nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) and phosphate-phosphorus (PO4-P) removal efficiency of ten temperate zone freshwater microalgae species during their exponential growth phase in unfiltered RAS WW at 17 ± 0.5 °C. Growth and nutrient uptake efficiency of six green and four non-green microalgae strains were compared between WW and reference growth medium in batch monocultures. The effect of three different LED grow light…

Absolutely continuous functions in Rn

2005

Abstract For each 0 α 1 we consider a natural n-dimensional extension of the classical notion of absolute continuous function. We compare it with the Malý's and Hencl's definitions. It follows that each α-absolute continuous function is continuous, weak differentiable with gradient in L n , differentiable almost everywhere and satisfies the formula on change of variables.

Influence of activated carbon on performance and microbial communities in the treatment of solvent pollutant mixtures in a continuous stirred tank re…

2020

The influence of the addition of granular activated carbon (GAC) on the anaerobic treatment of wastewater with a mixture of ethanol and 1-ethoxy-2-propanol (E2P), which are typical pollutants from the flexographic/printing industry, was evaluated. For this purpose, the reactor performance and microbial community in two continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs), i.e. control and GAC supplemented, were assessed. Both reactors, seeded with anaerobic granular biomass, showed similar global performance (RE > 93%), except after organic load shocks and after E2P addition. GAC supplementation substantially enhanced the response of the biological system to organic load shocks and reduced the acclimat…

Electrochemical Abatement of Organic Pollutants in Continuous-Reaction Systems through the Assembly of Microfluidic Cells in Series

2015

The electrochemical treatment of wastewater contaminated by organic pollutants was performed under a continuous mode by using, for the first time, various micro-electrochemical cells in series. A synthetic solution of acid orange 7 (AO7), a largely used azoic dye, was chosen as model wastewater. Both the electro-Fenton (EF) method with a cheap compact graphite cathode and electrochemical oxidation (EO) at a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode were used. EO gave higher abatement of total organic carbon (TOC), but drastically higher energetic consumptions than EF. It is worth mentioning that very different operating conditions were set for EF and EO to optimize their performances. The utilization…

Air Pollution Research Based on Spider Web and Parallel Continuous Particulate Monitoring—A Comparison Study Coupled with Identification of Sources

2021

Air pollution is monitored mainly in urban or industrial areas, even if it is known that in rural ones, low emission can significantly worsen air quality. Hence, cheap and easily accessible methods of monitoring are needed. Recently, spider webs biomonitoring is getting popular, however, there is no information about its comparison with active methods. In this study, PTEs accumulated on spider webs were compared with results from continuous particulate monitor (CPM). Generally, higher potentially toxic elements concentrations were noted in spider web, with exception in the case of Zn. Zn may be present rather in smaller fractions, hence it needs more time for accumulation on spider web whil…

Zeroes of real polynomials on C(K) spaces

2007

AbstractFor a compact Hausdorff topological space K, we show that the function space C(K) must satisfy the following dichotomy: (i) either it admits a positive definite continuous 2-homogeneous real-valued polynomial, (ii) or every continuous 2-homogeneous real-valued polynomial vanishes in a non-separable closed linear subspace. Moreover, if K does not have the Countable Chain Condition, then every continuous polynomial, not necessarily homogeneous and with arbitrary degree, has constant value in an isometric copy of c0(Γ), for some uncountable Γ.

Continuous-Variable Instantaneous Quantum Computing is Hard to Sample

2017

Instantaneous quantum computing is a sub-universal quantum complexity class, whose circuits have proven to be hard to simulate classically in the Discrete-Variable (DV) realm. We extend this proof to the Continuous-Variable (CV) domain by using squeezed states and homodyne detection, and by exploring the properties of post-selected circuits. In order to treat post-selection in CVs we consider finitely-resolved homodyne detectors, corresponding to a realistic scheme based on discrete probability distributions of the measurement outcomes. The unavoidable errors stemming from the use of finitely squeezed states are suppressed through a qubit-into-oscillator GKP encoding of quantum information,…

Split-Way CVTs: Parametric Analysis and Design

The thesis provides a parametric analytical method for the analysis and design of power-split continuously variable transmissions, which represent the state of the art for heavy-duty vehicles and hybrid electric cars. The functioning of any driveline is described by mean of a simple set of kinematic parameters, regardless of the constructive scheme. The calculation of the control torques remains straightforward even when both inertial effects and mechanical losses are taken into account. A simple design procedure is described and generalized in order to address any order of driveline, including multimode transmissions. The final layout is generated additively, without the need to analyze hu…
