Cholinergic and GABAergic regulation of nitric oxide synthesis in the guinea pig ileum.

1999

Nitric oxide (NO) synthesis was examined in intact longitudinal muscle-myenteric plexus preparations of the guinea pig ileum by determining the formation of [3H]citrulline during incubation with [3H]arginine. Spontaneous [3H]citrulline production after 30 min was 80–90 dpm/mg, which constituted ∼1% of the tissue radioactivity. Electrical stimulation (10 Hz) led to a threefold increase in [3H]citrulline formation. Removal of calcium from the medium or addition of N G-nitro-l-arginine strongly inhibited both spontaneous and electrically induced production of [3H]citrulline. TTX reduced the electrically induced but not spontaneous [3H]citrulline formation. The electrically induced formation o…

Differences in cardiorespiratory and neuromuscular responses between voluntary and stimulated contractions of the quadriceps femoris muscle.

2006

The aim of this study was to compare respiratory gas exchange variables and muscle fatigue between equal-intensity (i.e., same force output) electrostimulated and voluntary contractions of the quadriceps muscle (46+/-10% of maximal voluntary force). Twelve healthy men served as volunteers. Oxygen consumption, ventilation and respiratory exchange ratio were recorded during the exercise bouts. Muscle fatigue was quantified as the exercise-induced reduction in maximal voluntary force. The average oxygen consumption (11+/-3 versus 8+/-2 mL min(-1)kg(-1)), ventilation (23+/-4 versus 16+/-2 L min(-1)) and respiratory exchange ratio (0.96+/-0.02 versus 0.85+/-0.01) were significantly higher during…

Effects of sildenafil on human penile blood vessels.

2000

Abstract Objectives. To investigate the effects of sildenafil on human penile blood vessels and evaluate the interaction of sildenafil with neurogenic-mediated responses. Sildenafil is currently used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Methods. Penile dorsal arteries and deep dorsal veins were obtained from 14 multiorgan donors. Vascular rings were suspended in organ bath chambers, and the isometric tension was recorded. We then studied the effects of sildenafil on precontracted vessels and the neurogenic (noradrenergic and nitrergic) responses. Results. Sildenafil (10 −9 to 3 × 10 −6 M) caused concentration-dependent relaxation and amplified the relaxation induced by sodium nitroprus…

The effect of the launch of bitcoin futures on the cryptocurrency market: an economic efficiency approach

2021

We analyze the economic efficiency of the cryptocurrency market after the launch of Bitcoin futures by means of the Data Envelopment Analysis and Malmquist Indexes. Our results show that the introduction of Bitcoin futures did not affect the economic efficiency of the cryptocurrency market. However, we observe that Bitcoin obtained the highest risk-return trade-off due to its liquidity compared to the rest of cryptocurrencies. Therefore, our paper underlines the support of investors on Bitcoin to the detriment of the rest of cryptocurrencies.

cGMP-Dependent Protein Kinase I Mediates the Negative Inotropic Effect of cGMP in the Murine Myocardium

2002

To study the role of cGMP-dependent protein kinase I (cGKI) for cardiac contractility, force of contraction (F c ) was studied in electrically driven heart muscle from wild-type (WT) mice and from conventional and conditional cGKI knockout mice. Both 8-Br-cGMP and 8-pCPT-cGMP reduced Fc in cardiac muscle from juvenile WT but not from juvenile cGKI-null mutants. Similarly, the cGMP analogues reduced F c in forskolin-stimulated ventricular muscle from WT mice but not from cGKI-null mutants. In contrast, carbachol reduced F c in both groups of animals. 8-Br-cGMP reduced F c also in heart muscle from adult WT mice but not from adult cardiomyocyte-specific cGKI-knockout mice. These results demo…

Comparison of the 45-Second/15-Second Intermittent Running Field Test and the Continuous Treadmill Test

2012

Purposes:To compare the physiological responses and maximal aerobic running velocity (MAV) during an incremental intermittent (45-s run/15-s rest) field test (45-15FIT) vs an incremental continuous treadmill test (TR) and to demonstrate that the MAV obtained during 45-15FIT (MAV45-15) was relevant to elicit a high percentage of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) during a 30-s/30-s intermittent training session. Methods:Oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), and lactate concentration ([La]) were measured in 20 subjects during 2 maximal incremental tests and four 15-min intermittent tests. The time spent above 90% and 95% VO2max (t90% and t95% VO2max, respectively) was determined. Results:Maximal ph…

Amplifying effect of serotonin on contractile responses in rat aorta and depletion of intracellular Ca-stores

1993

1. Serotonin, 1 microM, induces a contractile response in isolated rat aorta in the presence or absence of extracellular Ca. 2. In Ca-free media, the fast phasic contraction is lower in magnitude and further addition of serotonin evokes no response. 3. Recovery of the contractile response in Ca-free medium is obtained by a 40 min incubation in Ca-containing solution. 4. In Ca, Mg-free medium, the response to serotonin is significantly higher than that obtained in the presence of Mg. 5. An amplifying effect of serotonin on the contractile responses induced by serotonin itself or by noradrenaline was observed in Ca-containing but not in Ca-free solution.

A useful muscarinic parameter and the differential recording of atrial and ventricular tension in the perfused rabbit heart

1971

1. A simple method of recording right atrial tension from the Langendorff perfused rabbit has been described; it is based on the “transverse” method of recording cardiac contractions described by Beckett (1970). 2. Right atrial and ventricular tensions were recorded by transducers attached to threads stitched into the right atrium and right ventricle, the heart being retained and prevented from rotating by two threads stitched into the intraventricular septum as described by Beckett. 3. Right ventricular diastolic tension was adjusted to 7.5 g. Interference with the atrial record by ventricular systole was overcome by adjustment of diastolic right atrial tension to its optimal value between…
