Assessment of atrial diastolic function in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy by cine magnetic resonance imaging

2015

Purpose: This study was conducted to assess the role of atrial function by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) for the evaluation of diastolic physiology in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) compared to healthy controls. Materials and methods: We enrolled 23 consecutive patients affected by HCM and 43 healthy subjects as age-matched control cases (CC). CMR was performed through acquisition of cine steady-state free precession sequences using a 1.5-T scanner. Image postprocessing was carried out using Tracking Tool software. Results: Atrial volumes were significantly higher in patients with HCM compared to CC: maximum atrial volume (p = 0.007) and minimum atrial volume (p = 0.01).…

CEUS in the differential diagnosis between biliary sludge, benign lesions and malignant lesions

2017

Abstract PURPOSE: Conventional grayscale ultrasound (US) is accurate in the diagnosis of gallbladder disease (GD), but in some cases, it is not decisive. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) improves the diagnostic accuracy of US. The primary objective of this study is to assess the reliability of CEUS in the diagnosis of sludge; the secondary objective is to assess the ability of CEUS to diagnose cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the US of 4137 patients positive for GD. In 43/4137 (1.04%), the use of could not discriminate between sludge and neoplasms. Then, we evaluated CEUS in only 39 of these patients, and in 4/43 (9%) cases it was not performable. After CEUS, the absence of e…

Imaging findings of hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia in men and women: are they really different?

2014

Purpose This study was undertaken to compare the imaging findings of focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) in men and women, as seen on multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Materials and methods Two radiologists reviewed 195 imaging studies (17 MDCT, 81 MRI and 97 CEUS examinations) pertaining to 111 FNHs (mean size 3 cm) in 91 patients (mean age 39 years). For each lesion, the readers assessed size, location, echogenicity, attenuation, or signal intensity in comparison with adjacent liver parenchyma on both unenhanced and postcontrast images. Results Eighty-nine FNHs (mean size 3.1 cm) were observed in 73 women (mean …

Ultrasonic evaluation with second harmonic imaging and SonoVue in the assessment of cerebral perfusion in diabetic patients: a case-control study

2004

The purpose was to compare human brain tissue perfusion in diabetic patients and healthy subjects with second harmonic imaging ultrasound and SonoVue to test the hypothesis that brain tissue perfusion differences are present in these two groups of patients. In a prospective case-control study, second harmonic examinations performed in 20 patients with type II diabetes mellitus and in 20 matched control patients were compared. After administration of 2.5 ml of SonoVue, 60 time-triggered images were recorded. Time-intensity curves, including peak intensity and positive gradient normalized to the middle cerebral artery, were calculated to quantify ultrasound intensity in a region of interest. …

Plantar fascia evaluation with a dedicated magnetic resonance scanner in weight-bearing position: our experience in patients with plantar fasciitis a…

2010

Purpose. This study assessed the usefulness of upright weight-bearing examination of the ankle/hind foot performed with a dedicated magnetic resonance (MR)imaging scanner in the evaluation of the plantar fascia in healthy volunteers and in patients with clinical evidence of plantar fasciitis. Materials and methods. Between January and March 2009, 20 patients with clinical evidence of plantar fasciitis (group A) and a similar number of healthy volunteers (group B) underwent MR imaging of the ankle/hind foot in the upright weight-bearing and conventional supine position. A 0.25-Tesla MR scanner (G-Scan, Esaote SpA, Genoa, Italy) was used with a dedicated receiving coil for the ankle/hind foot…

Centrifugal (inside-out) enhancement of liver hemangiomas: a possible atypical appearance on contrast-enhanced US.

2007

Abstract Objective To report the prevalence and to describe the atypical centrifugal (inside-out) appearance of contrast-enhancement of liver hemangiomas on contrast-enhanced sonography. Materials and methods Baseline and SonoVue ® -enhanced ultrasonography of 92 patients with 158 liver hemangiomas – considered atypical at grey-scale examination and confirmed by computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound follow-up – were reviewed in consensus by two experienced radiologists, who evaluated baseline echogenicity and the dynamic enhancement pattern of each lesion looking for the presence of central enhancing foci in the arterial phase followed by a centrifugal (inside-out) …

Contrast-enhanced second-harmonic sonography in the detection of pseudocapsule in renal cell carcinoma.

2004

“OBJECTIVE. Our purpose was to assess the capacity of contrast-enhanced second-harmonic sonography to detect a pseudocapsule in renal masses compared with conventional gray-scale sonography. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Thirty-two patients with 40 renal masses suspicious for renal cancer (mean diameter, 3.1 cm) were prospectively studied with contrast-enhanced second-harmonic sonography during IV administration of a second-generation sonographic contrast agent. The sonographic criteria for the presence of a pseudocapsule were a peritumoral hypoanechoic halo on conventional gray-scale imaging and a rim of perilesional enhancement, increasing in the tardive phase of the examination, on contrast-enha…

Forty-slice MDCT enteroclysis: evaluation after oral administration of isotonic solution in Crohn's disease.

2007

Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) enteroclysis after oral hyperhydration with isotonic solution in detecting bowel wall alterations in patients with Crohn’s disease. Materials and methods. Twenty-eight patients with a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease established by ileocolonoscopy and histology were enrolled in the study; 15 patients with negative ileocolonoscopy served as controls. In all cases, MDCT enteroclysis was performed after oral administration of 2,000 ml of isotonic solution and intravenous administration of N-butylscopolamine. Axial, isotropic multiplanar and volume-rendered reconstructions were used to evaluate…

Transcatheter embolization of a renal artery pseudoaneurysm after open partial nephrectomy.

2011

Twelve days after an open partial nephrectomy, a 31-year-old man was re-admitted urgently for acute lumbar pain. An emergent helical computed tomography scan with intravenous contrast revealed a 3-cm renal artery pseudoaneurysm at the site of the partial nephrectomy, which was responsible for a large perirenal hematoma. Transarterial hyperselective embolization successfully occluded the pseudoaneurysm with less than 1 mL of N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, an embolizing agent less costly than coils. The kidney parenchyma was fully preserved.

Crohn's disease: A comparative prospective study of transabdominal ultrasonography, small intestine contrast ultrasonography, and small bowel enema

2005

Background: Small intestine contrast ultrasonography (SICUS), when performed after distention of the small bowel lumen with an iso-osmolar polyethylene glycol electrolyte-balanced solution, shows high sensitivity (100%) and specificity (97%) in detecting small bowel abnormalities in patients who have not received a diagnosis but in whom there is a suspicion of intestinal diseases. The diagnostic yield of SICUS remains to be established in detecting small bowel lesions in patients with proven Crohn's disease (CD) in comparison with transabdominal ultrasonography (TUS), and in relationship to the experience of the operator, using small bowel enema (SBE) as the “gold standard.” Aim: The aim of…
