Splenic hemangiomas: contrast-enhanced sonographic findings

2012

Objectives The purpose of this study was to illustrate the baseline appearance and enhancement patterns of splenic hemangiomas on contrast-enhanced sonography. Methods Two experienced radiologists retrospectively reviewed by consensus baseline and contrast-enhanced sonographic examinations of 27 patients (14 women and 13 men; mean age, 58.7 years) with 27 splenic hemangiomas (mean size, 2 cm) confirmed by splenectomy, biopsy, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging and follow-up. Results On baseline sonography, 77.8% of the lesions showed a homogeneous echo texture that was mainly hyperechoic. Color Doppler imaging did not show any signal in 81.5% of the cases. After contrast ag…

Barium study associated with water siphon test in gastroesophageal reflux disease and its complications.

2007

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of digital cineradiography associated with the water siphon test (WST) in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux and to compare the results with oesophageal motility study, pH monitoring and endoscopy associated with biopsy and histology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and sixty consecutive patients underwent digital cineradiography with WST, motility study, pH monitoring and endoscopy with biopsy. The presence of gastroesophageal reflux, oesophagitis, Barrett''s oesophagus and intestinal metaplasia was evaluated. RESULTS: WST vs. pH monitoring showed sensitivity of 71%, specificity of 31%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 53% …

Left ventricular volume determination using Albunex.

1996

The aim of this study was to assess the ability of intravenous injection of Albunex to improve left ventricular volume determination in patients with various cardiac diseases. It is conceivable that the intravenous injection of microbubbles could improve echocardiographic left ventricular border delineation leading to improved interobserver variability. Echocardiograms were obtained during simultaneous intravenous injection of 0.08 and 0.12 ml/kg Albunex (four-chamber view). Within 6 hours after the recording of the contrast echocardiograms routine left heart angiography was performed. Volumes were measured using the slice method in native and contrast echocardiograms as well as in the angi…

Freehand three-dimensional assessment of left ventricular volumes and ejection fraction with ultrasound contrast agent LK565

2005

Accurate assessment of left ventricular function by determining left ventricular volumes and ejection fraction is important in evaluating the prognoses of patients with heart failure. Two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography suffers from low correlation with reference methods like ventriculography. Three-dimensionally (3D) assessed data have been proved to have better conformity. Endocardial border delineation remains a problem, however, especially in patients with suboptimal recordings. Few data exist on 3D-echocardiographic volumetry with ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs). We evaluated the second-generation UCA LK565 for its boundary-tracing capacities in freehand 3D echocardiography in a ph…

Value of contrast-enhanced MR angiography and helical CT angiography in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

2003

The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced MR angiography (ce MRA) and helical CT angiography (CTA) of the pulmonary arteries in the preoperative workup of patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). The ce MRA and CTA studies of 32 patients were included in this retrospective evaluation. Image quality was scored by two independent blinded observers. Data sets were assessed for number of patent segmental, subsegmental arteries, and number of vascular segments with thrombotic wall thickening, intraluminal webs, and abnormal proximal to distal tapering. Image quality for MRA/CTA was scored excellent in 16 of 16, good in 11 of 14, m…

MR angiography of the pedal arteries with gadobenate dimeglumine, a contrast agent with increased relaxivity, and comparison with selective intraarte…

2007

Purpose To compare gadobenate dimeglumine (Gd-BOPTA)–enhanced MR angiography (i.e., contrast-enhanced MRA [CE-MRA]) of the pedal vasculature with selective digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). Materials and Methods A total of 22 patients with PAOD were prospectively examined at 1.5T. For contrast enhancement, 0.1 mmol/kg body weight of Gd-BOPTA were applied. MRA consisted of dynamic imaging with acquisition of six consecutive data sets. Acquisition time for each data set was 24 seconds, voxel size was 1.0 × 1.0 × 1.3 mm3. A total of 20 out of 22 patient underwent selective DSA, two patients fine-needle DSA. DSA and MRA were per…

Bolus-enhanced renal spiral CT: technique, diagnostic value and drawbacks

1994

Abstract In addition to pre- and postcontrast renal CT scans, early bolus-enhanced spiral scans during demarcation of the corticomedullary junction were acquired in 85 patients. The diagnostic value and drawbacks of the three imaging series in the evaluation of renal disease were assessed. Renal calcifications and calculus disease detected at precontrast scans (18%) were obscured after contrast administration and excretion in most cases. In the detection of renal lesions bolus-enhanced spiral CT and delayed postcontrast scans had an identical diagnostic yield (94%). Bolus-enhanced spiral CT was superior in the assessment of lesion vascularity and vascular anatomy as well as opacification of…

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Surveillance for Vestibular Schwannoma After Microsurgical Resection Using a Retrosigmoid Transmeatal Approach.

2020

BACKGROUND Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a benign, usually slow-growing tumor. The drawback of radical microsurgical VS resection is the increased likelihood of neurologic injury, forcing surgeons to leave a tumor remnant in some cases. We evaluated the prognostic value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement patterns to determine the risk of tumor regrowth. METHODS This clinical study included 30 patients (20 women and 10 men) with VS who underwent surgery via a retrosigmoid transmeatal approach. The extent of resection was assessed by MRI 6 months after surgery. Two subtypes of intracanalicular linear enhancement were defined: linear enhancement of the walls of the internal audito…

Multiple sclerosis: prevalence of the ‘central vein’ sign in white matter lesions on gadolinium-enhanced susceptibility-weighted images

2021

Aims To evaluate prospectively whether an intravenous gadolinium injection could improve the detection of the central vein sign on susceptibility-weighted imaging sequences obtained with a 1.5 T magnetic resonance scanner in patients with multiple sclerosis compared to unenhanced susceptibility-weighted images. Materials and methods This prospective, institution review board-approved study included 19 patients affected by multiple sclerosis (six men; 13 women; mean age 40.8 years, range 20–74 years). Patients had the relapsing–remitting clinical subtype in 95% of cases, and only one (5%) patient had the primary progressive clinical subtype of multiple sclerosis. T2-weighted images, fluid-at…

Adhesive Small Bowel Obstruction: Predictive Factors of Lack of Response in Conservative Management with Gastrografin

2015

<b><i>Background:</i></b> Gastrografin represents a useful tool in the diagnosis and management of adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO). The aim of this study is to identify variables with negative influence in nonoperative management with gastrografin. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> From August 2008 to March 2013, 223 consecutive patients with 235 episodes of ASBO were included and received gastrografin. A protocol for prospective data collection was developed. In order to explore factors related to the failure of nonoperative treatment, univariate and multivariate analysis were performed. <b><i>Results:</i></b> One hundred…
