Automated vehicles' work planning in flexible manufacturing systems

2006

The problem of rules setting in coordination of automated vehicles access to shared system resources (sections of their transportation paths) which assure a deadlock free and starvation free flow of the executed processes belongs to NP-hard problems. Assuming that there are local (controlling access to shared resources) rules of priority dispatching, the problem deals with setting conditions sufficient for a pair (initial state, set of priority dispatching rules). The assumed knowledge base way of specifying a transportation subsystem leads to solving a logic-algebraic method decision problem. In this regard, the working knowledge representation synthesis method constitutes a significant co…

Integrated Design Optimization of a 5-DOF Assistive Light-weight Anthropomorphic Arm

2011

An integrated dimensional and drive train optimization method was developed for light-weight robotic arm design. The method deals with the determination of optimal link lengths and the optimal selection of motors and gearboxes from commercially available components. Constraints are formulated on the basis of kinematic performance and dynamic requirements, whereas the main objective is to minimize the weight. The design of a human-like arm, which is 10 kg in weight with a load capacity of 5 kg, is described. An integrated dimensional and drive train optimizationmethod was developed for light-weight robotic armdesign. The method deals with the determination of optimallink lengths and the opti…

A fully-automated procedure for measuring the electrical parameters of an induction motor drive with rotor at standstill

2003

The paper presents an automatic procedure to measure at standstill the electrical parameters of an induction motor fed by a PWM voltage source inverter. The proposed procedure executes automatically three tests using only the available PWM inverter control technique to obtain the required motor supply voltages. It allows the measurement of all the T-form circuit electrical parameters starting from the nameplate data as data-entry. It uses only a current sensor and no voltage sensor and process on line the collected data samples with a fast and easy to implement recursive least squares algorithm. Effectiveness of the automated procedure has been proved both by simulation and experimental tes…

Combining TMD and TLCD: analytical and experimental studies

2017

Abstract In these years several research efforts have been focused on developing efficient and reliable control devices for mitigating the structural response of tall and lightly damped buildings in case of strong dynamic excitations, such as wind and earthquake ones. In this context, Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) represent probably the most common control device due to their high control performances. On the other hand, Tuned Liquid Column Dampers (TLCDs) are increasingly becoming more popular because of some of their attractive features, cost-effectiveness among the others, even though they yield slightly less control performance compared to the classical TMDs. Aiming at combining the benefic…

Sensor-Assisted Machining

2008

This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding the application of various sensors and monitoring techniques to machining processes, cutting tools and machine tools. A number of monitoring methods used in manufacturing and relevant sensors are characterized. In particular, three most frequently used sensors, i.e., force, acceleration and acoustic emission, are presented and their characteristics and advantages are highlighted. The architectures of multiple-sensor tool-monitoring systems for detection of tool wear and breakage and collision for machine tools, including details of sensor fusion, signal processing and decision-making, are presented. Moreover, the concepts of sensor-bas…
