Nonlinear model based particle swarm optimization of PID shimmy damping control

2016

The present study aims to investigate the shimmy stability behavior of a single wheeled nose landing gear system. The system is supposed to be equipped with an electromechanical actuator capable to control the shimmy vibrations. A Proportional-Integrative-Derivative (PID) controller, tuned by using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) procedure, is here proposed to actively damp the shimmy vibration. Time-history results for some test cases are reported and commented. Stochastic analysis is last presented to assess the robustness of the control system.

Micro-machining

2008

This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding the fabrication of micro-products and element of micro-electromechanical systems using various techniques and processes. Both well-established techniques such as micro-machining and new trends in improving micro-processes taking into account EDM, laser, FIB, LIGA and DRIE processes are overviewed. The background of micro-machining processes, including typical machining operations such as turning, milling and drilling and different construction materials, is outlined. Moreover, a special focus was made on new constructions, control systems and effective applications of micro-machining techniques. In addition, the focus was directed towa…

A Novel Linear-Non-Linear Digital Control for DC/DC Converter with Fast Transient Response

2006

In this paper, a digitally controlled multimodule DC-DC converter with fast transient response, based on a linear-nonlinear control is presented. The proposed digital control improves the stability of the system, cuts off the effects of limit-cycle and reduces the recovery time, by making the "effective" bandwidth of the system independent of the bandwidth of the linear control loop and limits, at the same time, output voltage variations. The digital control is AVP-compatible and halves the recovery time. Preliminary hardware tests on a single phase step-down converter are reported. The experimental results match simulation ones, obtained by modelling system with Matlab/Aldec mixed environm…

Digital power conversion system based on a sigma-delta modulator linear model

2005

This paper presents a new linear model for the sigma-delta (/spl Sigma//spl Delta/) modulator, based on modeling the nonlinear quantizer with a linear factor, and its input-to-output transfer function is given. The use of a 1-bit sigma-delta modulator in DC/DC power converter systems permits to implement a complete digital control. Results of an investigation from a prototype for a DC-DC converter are here reported. Using of a field programmable gate array allows implementing a simple variable control function. The modulator output produces a variable-frequency variable duty-ratio signal to control the switching power transistors.

Identification and Robust Control of a Quadratic DC/DC Boost Converter by Hammerstein Model

2015

This paper deals with the theoretical framework definition and the experimental application of the Hammerstein (HM) identification and related robust control technique to a quadratic dc/dc single-switch boost (Q-boost) converter. A set of fourth-order transfer functions (TFs) has been identified with the Hammerstein approach, on the basis of a pseudorandom-binary-sequence (PRBS) excitation signal. The set of identified TFs has been then used to design a suitable robust control technique, able to properly deal with the converter parameter uncertainty and load variations. The proposed approach has been tested in numerical simulation and validated experimentally on a suitably developed test se…

Fuzzy Discrete Event Simulation for Fuzzy Production Systems Analysis

1998

Abstract Fuzzy production systems are characterised by vagueness in data and requirements that very often cannot be reduced to stochastic models. Therefore, such production systems cannot be analysed by using classical techniques such as Queue Theory or Discrete Simulation Analysis. On the other hand the great diffusion of Fuzzy Production environments in small and medium enterprises claims for the development of new analysis tools. This paper proposes a new approach to Discrete Event Simulation able to treat with fuzzy variables. A new methodology has been proposed to process fuzzy information within discrete event simulation and a prototype of a Fuzzy Discrete Event Simulator has been dev…

Testing for new physics with low-energy anti-neutrino sources: LAMA as a case study

1998

Some electroweak models with extended neutral currents, such as those based on the $E_6$ group, lead to an increase of the $\bar{\nu}-e$ scattering cross section at energies below 100 keV. We propose to search for the heavy Z' boson contribution in an experiment with a high-activity artificial neutrino source and with a large-mass detector. We present the case for the LAMA experiment with a large NaI(Tl) detector located at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. The neutrino flux is known to within a one percent accuracy, in contrast to the reactor case and one can reach lower neutrino energies. Both features make our proposed experiment more sensitive to extended gauge models, such as the …

Adaptive Control of a Gas Turbine Engine for Axial Compressor Faults

1996

An adaptive control system for a gas turbine engine which diagnoses conditions of axial compressor faults is proposed and analyzed. Nonlinear models of the gas turbine, neural networks and genetic algorithms are used in this research. The adaptive control system minimizes the reduction in gas turbine performance deriving from non-destructive faults. In the absence of faults, the system automatically performs the optimization of the engine between overhauls. Improvements concern the definition of adaptive control with faults in progress, and the real-time optimization of the engine during its operative life between overhauls. Simulation results of the suggested control system are also discus…
