Assessing the lighting systems flexibility for reducing and managing the power peaks in smart grids
2020
Abstract The application of “shiftable” or “modulable” load (i.e. washing machine, dishwasher, etc.) in a Smart Grid, can provide energy saving or modify the power flows in the grid, allowing a reduction of the electrical power peak. This paper explores the possibility to modulate the indoor artificial lighting to support this reduction. The study examines the impact of two different measures of power shaving. On the one hand, the change of Correlated Colour Temperature of the light source, and, on the other hand, the dimming of its luminous flux. The possibility to merge the above-mentioned technical solutions is also analyzed. Based on these strategies, several daily schedules of lighting…
Comparison between the performances of daylight linked control system at two different latitudes
2019
The aim of this work is to compare the performance of a daylight-linked control system installed and tested in two different case studies by means of a set of indices. The two case studies are characterized by different geometry, location and windows orientation. The first one is located at the ENEA premises in Lampedusa (IT, 35° 30' N); the second one is located in Palermo (IT, 38°6' N) on the third floor of the building 9 of the Department of Engineering if the University of Palermo. In both cases, the indices were calculated by using the same daylight-linked control system and the same end-use (office). The results were reported and analysed in order to demonstrate as the performances of…
Calculation of Energy Performance Indices of Daylight Linked Control Systems by Monitored Data
2017
The actual performances of Building Automation systems are often lower than the ideal ones. In order to investigate the actual performance of a Building Automation system for lighting control, a large stock of collected data, including indoor illuminance and absorbed electric power, have been presented and analysed in this paper. The measures have been taken during one year, in a laboratory located at the University of Palermo, where different lighting control systems, produced by two different manufacture companies, have been installed. As demonstrated in literature, many factors affecting energy savings’ evaluation in lighting control systems are the position and the typology of the senso…
Automated control systems for indoor lighting: from design to actual performances' assessment
In recent years, but already around 1980, many buildings have been equipped with Building Automation and Control (BAC) systems. These systems were applied as a normal upgrade of traditional systems in different field of the industrial sector. In general, they can be applied to the building plants in order to carry out a series of functions. The main benefits of the installation of this kind of system are well known. First of all, it has been shown that BACs systems installation increases the energy savings and because using many typologies of sensors (e.g. presence detectors to control lighting system) and because, by monitoring the data it is possible to modify plant’s strategies and also …
A smart lighting network design for urban rehabilitation and environmental sustainability: A case study of Bagheria
2014
The concept of smart cities, smart services, and smart grids has gained wide international attention in the last few years. The case study, Bagheria, Italy, is an urban area where many old buildings from the 18th century exist, hidden by the chaotic growth of the new city. Thus, the present paper addresses a project for lighting a town in Italy that aims to reduce energy consumption by using efficient lamps and control systems, to make the network useful for many purposes by integrating the ICT and to provide a new identity to the older part of the city by using new technologies and design concepts. A brand new multifunctional modular fixture called the StairLight is designed. The results sh…
STUDIO DI UNA FRIZIONE MAGNETOREOLOGICA PER AUTOVEICOLI
2013
Influence on the Dynamic Behavior of Full Car Equipped by Magnetorheological Damper via Switch on/off and h∞ Controller
2011
This paper shows the influence on dynamic behavior of the car when it is equipped with magneto-rheological dampers controlled by a feedback. The feedback is built up in two ways; the first is implemented by a switch on/off control that is characterized by the injection of magnetic field with a constant value. It happens when a certain value of relative speed between the sprung and unsprung mass is exceeded. The second feedback is characterized by the H-infinity control which is based on the relative displacement in order to vary the magnetic field signal in a continuous manner. At the same time the H-infinity control of vehicle is maintained by taking into account the exceeding of speed sig…
Adaptive type-2 fuzzy control of non-linear systems
2009
The paper describes the development of two different type-2 adaptive fuzzy logic controllers and their use for the control of a non linear system that is characterized by the presence of bifurcations and parameter uncertainty. Although a type-2 fuzzy logic controller is able to handle the non linearities and the uncertainties present in a system, its robustness and effectiveness can be increased by the use of an opportune adaptive algorithm. A simulation study was conducted to compare the behavior of adaptive controllers with that of simple type-1 and type-2 fuzzy logic controllers. The system to be controlled, used for the simulation, is a continuous bioreactor for the treatment of mixed w…
Adaptive type-2 fuzzy logic control of a bioreactor
2010
Two adaptive type-2 fuzzy logic controllers with minimum number of rules are developed and compared by simulation for control of a bioreactor in which aerobic alcoholic fermentation for the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae takes place. The bioreactor model is characterized by nonlinearity and parameter uncertainty. The first adaptive fuzzy controller is a type-2 fuzzy-neuro-predictive controller (T2FNPC) that combines the capability of type-2 fuzzy logic to handle uncertainties, with the ability of predictive control to predict future plant performance making use of a neural network model of the nonlinear system. The second adaptive fuzzy controller is instead a self-tuning type-2 PI cont…
Nonlinear fuzzy control of a fed-batch reactor for penicillin production
2012
Abstract The process of penicillin production is characterized by nonlinearities and parameter uncertainties that make it difficult to control. In the paper the development and testing of a multivariable fuzzy control system that makes use of type-2 fuzzy sets for the control of pH and temperature are described. The performance of the type-2 fuzzy logic control system (T2FLCS) is compared by simulation with that of a type-1 fuzzy logic control system (T1FLCS) and that of a control system with traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers proposed in the literature. The fuzzy controllers are optimized using an ANFIS algorithm. The best results are obtained with the T2FLCS pa…
