Multi-level optimization of a fiber transmission system via nonlinearity management

2006

Nonlinearity management is explored as a complete tool to obtain maximum transmission reach in a WDM fiber transmission system, making it possible to optimize multiple system parameters, including optimal dispersion pre-compensation, with fast simulations based on the continuous-wave approximation. © 2006 Optical Society of America.

ErrorSense: Characterizing WiFi Error Patterns for Detecting ZigBee Interference

2014

Recent years have witnessed the increasing adoption of heterogeneous wireless networks working in unlicensed ISM bands, thus creating serious problems of spectrum overcrowding. Although ZigBee, Bluetooth and WiFi networks have been natively designed for working in presence of interference, it has been observed that several performance impairments may occur because of heterogeneous sensitivity to detect or react to the presence of other technologies. In this paper we focus on the WiFi capability to detect interfering ZigBee links. Despite of the narrowband transmissions performed by ZigBee, in emerging scenarios ZigBee interference can have a significant impact on WiFi performance. Therefore…

Challenges and Confusions in Learning Version Control with Git

2014

Scholars agree on the importance of incorporating use of version control systems (VCSs) into computing curricula, so as to be able to prepare students for today’s distributed and collaborative work places. One of the present-day distributed version control systems (DVCSs) is Git, the system we have used on several courses. In this paper, we report on the challenges for learning and using the system based on a survey data collected from a project-based course and our own teaching experiences during several different kinds of computing courses. The results of this analysis are discussed and recommendations are made. peerReviewed

Influence of the luminance spatial non-homogeneities of a display monitor on the contrast sensitivity function determination

1999

Abstract The application of computer devices equipped with video monitors both in clinical practice and human vision research has become widespread. These devices offer great advantages over other traditional methodologies (such as printed tests) because they facilitate the variation of the experimental parameters or the design of new psychophysical experiences. The aim of this paper is to determine the degree to which spatial inhomogeneity affects the generation of sinusoidal gratings on a video display. Knowing this degree of tolerance will enable us to determine the minimum demands that can be made on the graphic board and the video screens for their implementation in assessing contrast …

Interferometric measurement of complex-field changes in transient detection imaging.

2020

We report an experimental method that combines nonlinear-crystal-based transient detection imaging (TDI) with interferometric complex-field retrieval. The system allows measuring both phase and amplitude of a dynamic scene while suppressing stationary background. Theoretical and experimental results prove the linear relation existing between input and output phases, as well as the benefits of phase analysis for both detection and measurement with high resolutions of λ/30, even under noisy conditions. Additionally, we present experimental evidence of the remarkable ability of the technique to detect phase sign changes in the scene —what we call differential-phase TDI— showing great detection…

El panel de loterías como tarea no paramétrica para la obtención de la actitud frente al riesgo

2012

In this paper, we propose a simple task for eliciting attitudes toward risky choice, the Sabater-Grande and Georgantzís (SGG) lottery-panel task, which consists in a series of lotteries constructed to compensate riskier options with higher risk-return trade-offs. Using Principal Component Analysis technique, we show that the SGG lotterypanel task is capable of capturing two dimensions of individual risky decision making: subjects’ average willingness to choose risky projects and their sensitivity towards variations in the return to risk. We report results from a large dataset obtained from the implementation of the SGG lottery-panel task and discuss regularities and the desirability of its …

A Microcalcification Detection System in Mammograms based on ANN Clustering

2018

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes to women mortality in the world. Clustered microcalcifications (MCs) in mammograms can be an important early sign of breast cancer, the detection is important to prevent and treat the disease. In this work, we present a novel method for the detection of MCs in mammograms which consists of regions of Interest (ROIs) segmentation, based on a spatial filter that allows the detection of small and large microcalcifications, clustering and classification of MCs by Artificial Neural Network. The system has been tested on a public dataset of digital images and compared with previous approaches. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach could achie…

Lead Reconstruction Using Artificial Neural Networks for Ambulatory ECG Acquisition

2021

One of the most powerful techniques to diagnose cardiovascular diseases is to analyze the electrocardiogram (ECG). To increase diagnostic sensitivity, the ECG might need to be acquired using an ambulatory system, as symptoms may occur during a patient’s daily life. In this paper, we propose using an ambulatory ECG (aECG) recording device with a low number of leads and then estimating the views that would have been obtained with a standard ECG location, reconstructing the complete Standard 12-Lead System, the most widely used system for diagnosis by cardiologists. Four approaches have been explored, including Linear Regression with ECG segmentation and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The b…

Automated detection of patient movement during a CBCT scan based on the projection data.

2015

Objectives To develop an automated procedure to detect patient motion on the projection images acquired during a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan and to evaluate the method's feasibility on small real-world CBCT images in relation to visual assessment. Methods Based on optical flow theory, software was developed using the sequence of the projection images of a CBCT machine for automated detection of patient motion. Averaged acceleration vectors were used as measurement data and compared with visual assessment of the projection images displayed as video. Seventy-nine CBCT data sets (small field-of-view: 40 mm) from our patient database were selected in a sequential fashion and evalu…

Sensitivity analysis of consumption cycles

2018

We study the special case of a nonlinear stochastic consumption model taking the form of a 2-dimensional, non-invertible map with an additive stochastic component. Applying the concept of the stochastic sensitivity function and the related technique of confidence domains, we establish the conditions under which the system's complex consumption attractor is likely to become observable. It is shown that the level of noise intensities beyond which the complex consumption attractor is likely to be observed depends on the weight given to past consumption in an individual's preference adjustment.
