Effect of material and geometric parameters on natural convection heat transfer over an eccentric annular-finned tube
2019
In this work, the performance of an eccentric annular finned tube heat exchanger under natural convection conditions has been investigated numerically. The objective of the study is to analyse the ...
INSTABILITY OF HAMILTONIAN SYSTEMS IN THE SENSE OF CHIRIKOV AND BIFURCATION IN A NON LINEAR EVOLUTION PROBLEM EMANATING FROM PHYSICS
2004
We prove the existence of a minimal geometrico-dynamical condition to create hyperbolicity in section in the vicinity of a transversal homoclinic partially hyperbolic torus in a near integrable Hamiltonian system with three degrees of freedom. We deduce in this context a generalization of the Easton's theorem of symbolic dynamics. Then we give the optimal estimation of the Arnold diffusion time along a transition chain in the initially hyperbolic Hamiltonian systems with three degrees of freedom with a surrounding chain of hyperbolic periodic orbits .In a second part, we describe geometrically a mechanism of diffusion studied by Chirikov in a near integrable Hamiltonian system with three de…
An alternative space-time meshless method for solving transient heat transfer problems with high discontinuous moving sources
2016
International audience; The aim of this work is the development of a space-time diffuse approximation meshless method (DAM) to solve heat equations containing discontinuous sources. This work is devoted to transient heat transfer problems with static and moving heat sources applied on a metallic plate and whose power presents temporal discontinuities. The space-time DAM using classical weight function is convenient for continuous transient heat transfer. Nevertheless, for problems including discontinuities, some spurious oscillations for the temperature field occur. A new weight function, respecting the principle of causality, is used to eradicate the physically unexpected oscillations.
A numerical study of tropical cross-tropopause transport by convective overshoots
2007
Abstract. Observations obtained during the Tropical Convection, Cirrus and Nitrogen Oxides (TROCCINOX) golden day have revealed the presence of ice particles up to 410 K (18.2 km) 2 km above the local tropopause. The case was investigated using a three-dimensional quadruply nested non-hydrostatic simulation and Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) observations. The simulation reproduced the measurements along the flight track fairly well. A reasonable agreement with MSG observations was also achieved: the 10.8-μm brightness temperature (BT) minimum of 187 K was reproduced (a value 6 K colder than the environmental cold-point temperature) as was the positive BT difference between the 6.2- and 10…
Etude numérique du comportement thermique d’un séchoir solaire utilisant un lit thermique pour le stockage d’énergie
2018
This thesis presents a numerical study of an indirect natural convection solar dryer for drying agricultural products (Figs). The first part analyzes a solar dryer containing a drying chamber coupled to a reversed absorber and a solar chimney. Simulations were made to determine the dynamic and thermal fields under the influence of the variation of the solar chimney configuration and the size of the inlet opening. The governing equations based on the standard k-ε turbulence model are solved by the finite volume method using the ANSYS-Fluent commercial code. The second part analyzes the effect of adding a thermal storage in the form of a gravel bed in the drying chamber. The bed is modeled as…

Contour-Variable Model of Constitutive Equations for Polymer Melts
2009
Based on a modified expression of the rate of the convective constraint release, we present a new contour-variable model of constitutive equations in which the non-uniform segmental stretch and the non-Gaussian chain statistical treatment of the single chain are considered to describe the polymer chain dynamics and the rheological behavior of an entangled system composed of linear polymer chains. The constitutive equations are solved numerically in the cases of steady shear and transient start-up of steady shear. The results indicate that the orientation and stretch, as well as the tube survival probability, have strong dependence on the chain contour variable, especially in the high-shear-…
Slab-triggered wet upwellings produce large volumes of melt: Insights into the destruction of the North China Craton
2018
Abstract Cratons have remained stable for billions of years, despite of ongoing mantle convection and plate tectonics. The North China Craton (NCC), however, is abnormal, as it has experienced a destruction event during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic which was accompanied by extensive magmatism. Several lines of evidence suggest that the (Paleo-)Pacific plate played an important role in this event. Yet, the geodynamic link between subduction and craton destruction remains poorly understood, and it is unclear why there is no systematic spatial and temporal variation of magmatism related to subduction. Here, we perform 2-D petrological-thermomechanical simulations to investigate the influence of s…
A free plate surface and weak oceanic crust produce single-sided subduction on Earth
2012
[1] Earth’s lithosphere is characterized by the relative movement of almost rigid plates as part of global mantle convection. Subduction zones on present-day Earth are strongly asymmetric features composed of an overriding plate above a subducting plate that sinks into the mantle. While global self-consistent numerical models of mantle convection have reproduced some aspects of plate tectonics, the assumptions behind these models do not allow for realistic single-sided subduction. Here we demonstrate that the asymmetry of subduction results from two major features of terrestrial plates: (1) the presence of a free deformable upper surface and (2) the presence of weak hydrated crust atop subd…
