Reducing Air Pollutants through Road Innovative Intersections

2013

Road pollutant emissions are correlated mainly to infrastructural capacity and to traffic intensity and typology. With the aim to improve road intersections performances in the last years was designed many new geometric layouts, like turbo roundabouts and flower roundabouts. The main objective of this paper is carried out a comparative analysis between conventional and innovative roundabouts in terms of CO, CO2, NO and PM2,5 vehicular emissions, evaluated by means of COPERT Software which is developed as a European tool for the calculation of emissions from the road transport sector.

"Naissance, consécration et disparition (?) d'une convention de la constitution: l'exemple de la réserve parlementaire"

2020

This study illustrates the relevance of the concept of « political law » to understand the constitutional law of the French Fifth Republic. Its purpose is to highlight, through the example of the « réserve parlementaire », the normativity of some facts (the existence of the « réserve parlementaire » preceded its consecration by written law), and the inability of written law to fully seize political practices. The prohibition of the « reserve parlementaire » by written law (in 2017) will be legally effective only as long it is politically accepted.

Soil erosion assessment on tillage and alternative soil managements in a Sicilian vineyard

2011

Mediterranean crops favour high erosion rates. Vineyards use to reach the highest soil and water losses due to the lack of vegetation cover. A topographical approach by means of the use of vineyards poles as fixed reference point as erosion markers allowed to quantify high and non-sustainable soil erosion rates on the Sicilian vineyards during 9 years. In order to develop strategies to control the soil losses, seven land management were selected and applied in a typical blanc wine grape vineyard located in southwestern Sicily. Comparable plots were managed traditionally using conventional tillage and alternatively using various cover crops: 1) Vicia faba; 2) Vicia faba and Vicia sativa; 3) …

Logic, Computing and Biology

2015

Logic and Computing are appropriate formal languages for Biology, and we may well be surprised by the strong analogy between software and DNA, and between hardware and the protein machinery of the cell. This chapter examines to what extent any biological entity can be described by an algorithm and, therefore, whether the Turing machine and the halting problem concepts apply. Last of all, I introduce the concepts of recursion and algorithmic complexity, both from the field of computer science, which can help us understand and conceptualise biological complexity.

UNCLOS and territorialization of the seas: the case of Indian and Pacific Oceans

2017

The 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone created by the 1982 UNCLOS regime generates conflict in areas where the distance between opposite national coasts is less than 400 nautical miles and in marginal seas surrounded by many states and with islands. This is the case of the marginal seas in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In particular, the EEZ regime has proved troublesome in the South China Sea, leading some authors to ask whether it has actually strengthened or undermined peace and cooperation. Does the problem really lie with UNCLOS? My purpose hereby is to explain that, in truth, UNCLOS is a milestone in the process of territorialization of the seas . The EEZ regime represents the…

Una escultura de José Esteve Bonet en La Orotava (Tenerife)

2020
