Misinterpretation risks of global stochastic optimisation of kinetic models revealed by multiple optimisation runs

2016

Abstract One of use cases for metabolic network optimisation of biotechnologically applied microorganisms is the in silico design of new strains with an improved distribution of metabolic fluxes. Global stochastic optimisation methods (genetic algorithms, evolutionary programing, particle swarm and others) can optimise complicated nonlinear kinetic models and are friendly for unexperienced user: they can return optimisation results with default method settings (population size, number of generations and others) and without adaptation of the model. Drawbacks of these methods (stochastic behaviour, undefined duration of optimisation, possible stagnation and no guaranty of reaching optima) cau…

An extended continuous mapping theorem for outer almost sure weak convergence

2019

International audience; We prove an extended continuous mapping theorem for outer almost sure weak convergence in a metric space, a notion that is used in bootstrap empirical processes theory. Then we make use of those results to establish the consistency of several bootstrap procedures in empirical likelihood theory for functional parameters.

The coalescent in population models with time-inhomogeneous environment

2002

AbstractThe coalescent theory, well developed for the class of exchangeable population models with time-homogeneous reproduction law, is extended to a class of population models with time-inhomogeneous environment, where the population size is allowed to vary deterministically with time and where the distribution of the family sizes is allowed to change from generation to generation. A new class of time-inhomogeneous coalescent limit processes with simultaneous multiple mergers arises. Its distribution can be characterized in terms of product integrals.

Donsker-Type Theorem for BSDEs: Rate of Convergence

2019

In this paper, we study in the Markovian case the rate of convergence in Wasserstein distance when the solution to a BSDE is approximated by a solution to a BSDE driven by a scaled random walk as introduced in Briand, Delyon and Mémin (Electron. Commun. Probab. 6 (2001) Art. ID 1). This is related to the approximation of solutions to semilinear second order parabolic PDEs by solutions to their associated finite difference schemes and the speed of convergence. peerReviewed

A PHASE TRANSITION FOR LARGE VALUES OF BIFURCATING AUTOREGRESSIVE MODELS

2019

We describe the asymptotic behavior of the number $$Z_n[a_n,\infty )$$ of individuals with a large value in a stable bifurcating autoregressive process, where $$a_n\rightarrow \infty $$ . The study of the associated first moment is equivalent to the annealed large deviation problem of an autoregressive process in a random environment. The trajectorial behavior of $$Z_n[a_n,\infty )$$ is obtained by the study of the ancestral paths corresponding to the large deviation event together with the environment of the process. This study of large deviations of autoregressive processes in random environment is of independent interest and achieved first. The estimates for bifurcating autoregressive pr…

On implementation of the Gibbs sampler for estimating the accuracy of multiple diagnostic tests

2010

Implementation of the Gibbs sampler for estimating the accuracy of multiple binary diagnostic tests in one population has been investigated. This method, proposed by Joseph, Gyorkos and Coupal, makes use of a Bayesian approach and is used in the absence of a gold standard to estimate the prevalence, the sensitivity and specificity of medical diagnostic tests. The expressions that allow this method to be implemented for an arbitrary number of tests are given. By using the convergence diagnostics procedure of Raftery and Lewis, the relation between the number of iterations of Gibbs sampling and the precision of the estimated quantiles of the posterior distributions is derived. An example conc…

Random walk approximation of BSDEs with H{\"o}lder continuous terminal condition

2018

In this paper, we consider the random walk approximation of the solution of a Markovian BSDE whose terminal condition is a locally Hölder continuous function of the Brownian motion. We state the rate of the L2-convergence of the approximated solution to the true one. The proof relies in part on growth and smoothness properties of the solution u of the associated PDE. Here we improve existing results by showing some properties of the second derivative of u in space. peerReviewed

Sigma-convergence in the OECD: Transitional Dynamics or Narrowing Steady State Differences?

2002

The empirical literature of growth has steadly improved the econometric methods used mainly to address the effect of cross-country heterogeneity in the estimated convergence rate. In this paper, we highlight an important implication of this process of econometric refinement that has so far received little attention. We show that the picture that emerges from models that allow for generalised heterogeneity changes our view of the process of convergence within the OECD. Estimation methods that allow for non or partial heterogeneity stress the importance of transitional dynamics in the process of convergence. Thus sigma-convergence is mostly accounted for by beta-convergence. On the contrary, …

Adaptive Wavelet Methods for SPDEs

2014

We review a series of results that have been obtained in the context of the DFG-SPP 1324 project “Adaptive wavelet methods for SPDEs”. This project has been concerned with the construction and analysis of adaptive wavelet methods for second order parabolic stochastic partial differential equations on bounded, possibly nonsmooth domains \(\mathcal{O}\subset \mathbb{R}^{d}\). A detailed regularity analysis for the solution process u in the scale of Besov spaces \(B_{\tau,\tau }^{s}(\mathcal{O})\), 1∕τ = s∕d + 1∕p, α > 0, p ≥ 2, is presented. The regularity in this scale is known to determine the order of convergence that can be achieved by adaptive wavelet algorithms and other nonlinear appro…

University trustees as channels between academe and industry: Toward an understanding of the executive science network

2013

Abstract Policy makers in the United States (US) and the European Union (EU) see “autonomous” research universities as increasingly central to “world class” status, technology development and economic innovation. Trustees or regents (US) and external board members (EU) are seen as a marker of university autonomy. Examining university trustees may shed some light on the role of trustees/external board members play in research strategy, innovation and economic development. Given that a number of trustees of US research universities sit on the boards of directors of large corporations with research interests, we hypothesized that trustees may be an important channel connecting universities to …
