L’isola da mangiare. L’alterità siciliana vista dai ricettari per stranieri

2020

The work focuses on the relation between typical food and insularity, through a semiotics analysis of Sicilian cookbooks for anglophone readers. Initially, we briefy show examples of how cookbooks have contributed in the past, according to historians and anthropologists, which have shaped territorial identities and promotes regional and local identities. Following this there is a recap on the semiotics approach towards cookbooks and on the several elements involved in this kind of text analysis such as spatial, historical, political and translational factors. Secondly, we analyze a group of Sicilian cookbooks, published for the international market, highlighting their cartographical constru…

Thermae Himeraeae (Sicilia) e il suo hinterland: dalla documentazione ceramica alle dinamiche del popolamento in età imperiale

2014

This paper presents the archaeological and archaeometric results about roman amphorae, coarse/cooking wares and TSA from Termini Imerese (NW Sicily), and the relationships with distribution of same pottery in the hinterland of ancient city, where in the last thirty years the Dept. of Cultural Heritage of University of Palermo have carried out extensive surveys (San Leonardo, Torto and Northern Imera valleys). The research starts up typological and archaeometric studies published in the nineties of last century, now part of a new interdisciplinary program with CNR-IBAM (Catania) and CNRS (Aix-en-Provence). A good documentation of African amphorae, coarse/cooking wares, produced both in Byzac…

Transarterial chemoembolization and sorafenib in patients with intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma: time to enter routine clinical practice?

2015

According to the guidelines of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), patients affected from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be classified according to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system. This classification system divides HCC patients in five stages (0, A, B, C and D) on the basis of a number of prognostic and treatment- related variables such as tumor status and liver function. A specific treat ment approach is then proposed for each of the above-mentioned stages. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is recommended as first-line therapy in the treatment of patients with intermediate-stage (BCLC-B class) HCC [1]. The efficacy of this procedure…

Survival analysis of proposed BCLC-B subgroups in hepatocellular carcinoma patients

2013

Background & Aims The BCLC-staging system is used to facilitate treatment decisions in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Owing to the observed clinical heterogeneity of the intermediate stage BCLC-B, a subclassification was proposed taking Child–Pugh score and extended criteria for transplantation into account. Analysis of the prognostic significance of a proposed subclassification of the BCLC-B score in a European cohort of HCC patients. Methods Eight hundred and eighty four consecutive HCC patients were retrospectively analysed. Patients with stage BCLC-B were grouped according to the proposed subclassification. Baseline patient and tumour characteristics, therapy and overall …

Two large steps forward, one small step back

2018

In 2017, the FDA approved regorafenib and nivolumab for the treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma following prior sorafenib treatment, opening the door for an effective systemic second-line therapy in advanced disease. By contrast, the addition of sorafenib to transarterial chemoembolization with drug-eluting beads did not improve progression-free survival in the intermediate disease stage.

Interim Analysis of Overall Survival Per Subgroups in the Prospective, Non-Interventional Insight Study in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma Tre…

2012

ABSTRACT Background The efficacy of Sorafenib in patients (pts) with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been proven in randomized, controlled trials. INSIGHT is a prospective, non-interventional study, conducted in Germany and Austria in pts with HCC. The objectives of this study are the evaluation of safety and efficacy under practice conditions in both hospitals and private practices. Enrollment into INSIGHT is not restricted to a particular tumor stage. Recruitment into the study is ongoing. Methods The second interim analysis (data cut-off 23 FEB 2012) evaluated overall survival and safety data in relevant subgroups. All patients with HCC were observed for the duration of their sorafeni…

Mediterranean Diet and Physical Activity Decrease the Initiation of Cardiovascular Drug Use in High Cardiovascular Risk Individuals: A Cohort Study

2021

Our aim was to assess whether long-term adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) were associated with a lower initiation of cardiovascular drug use. We studied the association between cumulative average of MedDiet adherence and LTPA and the risk of cardiovascular drug initiation in older adults at high cardiovascular risk (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea trial participants) non-medicated at baseline: glucose-lowering drugs (n = 4437), antihypertensives (n = 2145), statins (n = 3977), fibrates (n = 6391), antiplatelets (n = 5760), vitamin K antagonists (n = 6877), antianginal drugs (n = 6837), and cardiac glycosides (n = 6954). Hidradenitis suppurativa in surgeons' practice: Prevalence and treatment approach according to the Hurley stage in Latvia

2020

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent, debilitating, and frequently misdiagnosed inflammatory skin disease that often requires surgical intervention. To assess the prevalence of HS patients in surgeons' practice and surgeons' approach to treating HS patients, we created a self-administered, Hurley stage-based questionnaire that was distributed during the Latvian Association of Surgeons meeting. Of the total 60 questionnaires distributed, 56 (93%) were collected and 53 (88%) of them were considered valid. Overall, 73.6% of the surgeons confirmed having seen patients with chronic inflamed suppurative lesions in the skin folds during their practice. Median reported number of HS…

Preservation of vitamins content in Cuccìa using an innovative method of processing

2019

Cuccìa is a traditional Sicilian food prepared by boiling whole durum wheat kernels, in water, for many hours. This process destroys the vitamins E and B contents of crude kernels. It was rated a method to prepare the Cuccìa, preserving the vitamin content. Four varieties of durum wheat were processed comparing the traditional cooking method (TR-boiling for 5/6 hours), and an innovative one (IN-grains scarification, germination, and cooking at 50 °C for 2 hours). On soups obtained the content of biotin, niacin and α-amylase activity were determined. ANOVA showed the cooking method influences biotin and niacin content having values from 0.56 and 0.72 ng ml−1 (raw grain) and values close to 0…
