Plasma Viscosity and NLR in Young Subjects with Myocardial Infarction: Evaluation at the Initial Stage and at 3 and 12 Months

2018

In the “Sicilian study on juvenile myocardial infarction,” we had evaluated plasma viscosity (PV) and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) at the age of ⩽45 years. Now, we examined the relationship between these 2 parameters in 120 subjects (109 men and 11 women) aged ⩽45 years with recent AMI. The patients were classified according to the number of cardiovascular risk factors, the electrocardiographic criteria (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction [STEMI] or non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction [NSTEMI]), and the extent of coronary stenosis, evaluated with coronary angiography. On fasting venous blood, we measured PV at the sh…

The prognostic and predictive value of IKZF1 and IKZF3 expression in T-cells in patients with multiple myeloma

2018

Purpose: While recent studies described the role of IKZF1/3 proteins in multiple myeloma (MM) cells, few have highlighted the significance of IKZF1/3 expression in T-cells. In this study we examine the prognostic and predictive value of IKZF1/3 expression in T-cells in patients with MM stage III. Experimental design: We analysed the IKZF1/3 expression levels in T-cells from 45 MM stage I (MMI) and 50 newly diagnosed MM stage III (MMIII) patients, according to Durie-Salmon staging system, by flow cytometry to examine their prognostic and predictive value. We also combined in vivo observations with in vitro assays to determine the effect of IKZF1/3 expression on the T-cell immunophenotype and…

Consumers' attitude towards rice cooking processes in Korea, Japan, Thailand and France

2013

UT: 000317947100009; International audience; Concerns and attitudes towards nutrition, health, safety, commodity, and sensory appeal are the factors determining cooking processes in one's everyday life. A picture-word matching task was conducted in order to compare consumer's opinion on seven common rice-cooking processes (rinsing, soaking, adding other kinds of rice, cereals, and beans, brown rice germination, rapid-boiling, pressure-cooking, and steaming) in Korea, Japan, Thailand, and France. The results showed that, in each country, the more familiar a cooking process is, the more it is associated with sensory quality. Pressure-cooking, soaking and rapid-boiling were positively matched …

Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs): A Unique Model of Cancer Metastases and Non-invasive Biomarkers of Therapeutic Response

2021

Late-stage cancer metastasis remains incurable in the clinic and is the major cause death in patients. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are thought to be metastatic precursors shed from the primary tumor or metastatic deposits and circulate in the blood. The molecular network regulating CTC survival, extravasation, and colonization in distant metastatic sites is poorly defined, largely due to challenges in isolating rare CTCs. Recent advances in CTC isolation and ex vivo culture techniques facilitates single-cell omics and the development of related animal models to study CTC-mediated metastatic progression. With these powerful tools, CTCs can potentially be used as non-invasive biomarkers pr…

L’instrumentum métallique lié à la cuisine en Gaule romaine

2013

The metal finds associated to storage, food and liquids preparation and cooking comprise multipurpose and specific instruments. The first two phases are illustrated by rather few utensils: buckets, barrels, jugs and boilers, knives and other cleavers. Three cooking patterns are used for the third phase. The first one, simmering, needs hinged cauldrons, assembled or in one piece, maintained above the hearth by suspension chains, but also cauldrons and pots (jars) put down on cooking stands. Grilling needs gridirons, firedogs, braziers and roast spits. At last, for quick cooking with the supply of fat or water which allow to sear food pans and cooking stands are mainly being used. Small imple…

Preprocessing methods for nodule detection in lung CT

2005

Abstract The use of automatic systems in the analysis of medical images has proven to be very useful to radiologists, especially in the framework of screening programs, in which radiologists make their first diagnosis on the basis of images only, most of those corresponding to healthy patients, and have to distinguish pathological findings from non-pathological ones at an early stage. In particular, we are developing preprocessing methods to be applied for pulmonary nodule Computer Aided Detection in low-dose lung Multi Slice CT (computed tomography) images.

Invasive ovarian seromucinous carcinoma developed on an endometrioma. The determining role of transvaginal ultrasound

2021

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that has been associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer, especially epithelial tumors. Transvaginal ultrasound is a first-line diagnostic method for the assessment of endometriosis, and of endometriomas, the ovarian cystic form of endometriosis. Endometriomas usually have typical ultrasound features that allow them to be easily diagnosed. When atypical images are observed, such as solid areas with vascular flow, their malignancy should be ruled out, especially in peri-menopausal women. Early diagnosis of these tumors is essential because immediate surgical treatment is crucial for prognosis. Malignant neoplasms associated with endome…

Performance of the PRO-C3 collagen neo-epitope biomarker in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

2019

Background & Aim There is an unmet need for non-invasive biomarkers in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that can diagnose advanced disease and identify patients suitable for clinical trials. The PRO-C3 collagen neo-epitope is a putative direct marker of fibrogenesis. We assessed the performance of PRO-C3 in a large, well-characterised international NAFLD cohort and report the development and validation of 2 novel panels for the diagnosis of advanced fibrosis (F≥3) in NAFLD, including a simplified clinical score which eliminates the need for online calculators. Methods Plasma PRO-C3 levels were determined in a prospectively recruited international cohort of 449 patients with biopsy …

Cytomegalovirus and inflammatory bowel disease: Is there a link?

2006

The objective of this report is to give an overall view of the epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic features of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A review of published reports on this topic was carried out, with particular attention paid to the selection of patients included in studies and the diagnostic methods employed. CMV is frequently associated with IBD. In some cases, CMV infection is associated with a poor outcome but it is not clear which patients are more likely to be affected and in which stage of the disease. The use of anti-viral therapy in IBD is controversial and an empirical study with controls is needed. The natural histor…

Autonomic dysfunction in a group of lower extremities arterial disease outpatients.

2021

Background: The understanding of the specific role of sympathetic neural control and dysregulation in lower extremities arterial disease (LEAD) is still very limited. Aim of our study was to investigate the autonomic profile in LEAD patients and to evaluate if the eventual autonomic alterations were more severe in patients with advanced disease. Methods: We enrolled all consecutive outpatients with LEAD referred to our Departments between July 2012 and September 2014. They were compared to a group of matched outpatients without LEAD. All patients underwent Holter ECG monitoring. Time-domain analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) was evaluated. Results: Compared to controls, patients with …
