LATE ROMAN COOKING WARES FROM NORA (SARDINIA): INTERIM ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND ARCHAEOMETRICAL STUDY.

2010

This contribution aims to present the interim results of an archaeological and archaeometric research on the cooking wares from the central quarter of Nora (Cagliari, Sardinia) where a team from the University of Milano identified several Late Roman residences. The morphological analysis of the different groups has put in evidence a low variation of the types except for their size. The archaeometrical data show that most of the analysed materials may correspond to a local or regional production (with certain degree of variation) of cooking wares widely used in Nora in the Late Roman Period. It is important to stress that petrographic analysis shows that the compositional characteristics of …

Angiogenesis in neuroblastoma: relationship to survival and other prognostic factors in a cohort of neuroblastoma patients.

2000

PURPOSE: To study angiogenesis in neuroblastoma, using morphometric and computerized image analysis, and correlate the results with survival and other prognostic factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-nine patients from the Spanish Cooperative Study for Neuroblastoma were studied. Tumoral angiogenesis was studied using an avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase technique with an anti-CD34 antibody. Vascular parameters (VPs) were analyzed by a computerized system. Statistical analysis was also performed. RESULTS: Sixty-six samples had adequate tumoral tissue, and their tumoral vessels were counted. Endothelial cells were more prominent in pure neuroblastomas than in maturing and more mature tumors. VP…

The expression of HSP60 and HSP10 in large bowel carcinomas with lymph node metastase

2005

Abstract Background The involvement of Heat Shock Proteins (HSP) in cancer development and progression is a widely debated topic. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the presence and expression of HSP60 and HSP10 in a series of large bowel carcinomas and locoregional lymph nodes with and without metastases. Methods 82 Astler and Coller's stage C2 colorectal cancers, of which 48 well-differentiated and 34 poorly-differentiated, were selected along with 661 lymph nodes, including 372 with metastases and 289 with reactive hyperplasia only, from the same tumours. Primitive tumours and both metastatic and reactive lymph nodes were studied; specifically, three different compartment…

Functional analysis ofp53 gene and the prognostic impact of dominant-negativep53 mutation in endometrial cancer

2005

In addition to the loss of function, mutant p53 can possess a dominant-negative effect on wild-type p53 and may also exert gain-of-function activity. It is not clear whether the functional status of p53 mutation contributes to differences in outcome in endometrial cancer. We collected a total of 92 RNA samples of high quality from endometrial cancer tissues, and the samples were subjected to yeast functional assay and sequencing for p53 mutations. The detected mutant p53 genes were further investigated for their dominant-negative activity using a yeast-based transdominance assay. p53 mutation was found in 24 out of 92 (26.1%) tumors, of which 10 exhibited no dominant-negative activity (rece…

Sentinel lymph node mapping with indocyanine green in cervical cancer patients undergoing open radical hysterectomy: a single-institution series

2020

Abstract Purpose To assess the rate of bilateral sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection with indocyanine green (ICG), to evaluate the sensitivity and the negative predictive value of cervical cancer patients undergoing open radical hysterectomy; to compare open versus minimally invasive SLN biopsy performance and to assess factors related to no/unilateral SLN mapping. Methods We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients with FIGO 2018 stage IA1 with lymph-vascular space involvement to IIB and IIIC1p cervical carcinoma who underwent SLN mapping with ICG followed by systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy between 05/2017 and 06/2020. Patients were divided according to surgical approach for statist…

Ramucirumab for patients with intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and elevated alpha fetoprotein (AFP): Pooled results from two phase I…

2020

549 Background: Intermediate-stage HCC, as defined as Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) Stage B, is a heterogeneous disease in terms of liver function and tumor load. REACH (NCT01140347) and REACH-2 (NCT02435433) investigated ramucirumab (RAM) in patients (pts) with HCC after prior sorafenib (SOR), with REACH-2 enrolling only pts with baseline AFP ≥400 ng/mL. An exploratory analysis of outcomes by BCLC stage was performed. Methods: All pts had HCC (BCLC stage C or B disease refractory/not amenable to locoregional therapy), Child-Pugh A, ECOG PS 0-1, and prior SOR. Pts were randomized to RAM 8 mg/kg or Placebo (P) Q2W. A pooled meta-analysis of independent pt data (stratified by study) f…

The PEGASUS trial: Post-surgical liquid biopsy-guided treatment of stage III and high-risk stage II colon cancer patients.

2020

TPS4124 Background: Moving stage III Colon Cancer (CC) into the precision medicine space is a priority in view of the lack of molecular markers driving adjuvant treatment. Retrospective studies have demonstrated the tremendous prognostic impact of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) analysis after curative intent surgery, and suggested that lack of conversion of ctDNA from detectable to undetectable after adjuvant chemotherapy reflects treatment failure. With these premises, we have designed the PEGASUS trial (NCT04259944). Methods: PEGASUS is a prospective multicentric study designed to prove the feasibility of using liquid biopsy (LB) to guide the post-surgical and post-adjuvant clinical manag…

Material deprivation affects the management and clinical outcome of hepatocellular carcinoma in a high-resource environment

2021

Abstract Aim This study investigated how material deprivation in Italy influences the stage of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at diagnosis and the chance of cure. Methods 4114 patients from the Italian Liver Cancer database consecutively diagnosed with HCC between January 2008 and December 2018 were analysed about severe material deprivation (SMD) rate tertiles of the region of birth and region of managing hospitals, according to the European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions. The main outcomes were HCC diagnosis modalities (during or outside surveillance), treatment adoption and overall survival. Results In more deprived regions, HCC was more frequently diagnosed during surveillan…

Cancer and Pregnancy: A Comprehensive Review

2021

Simple Summary The co-occurrence of cancer and pregnancy is fortunately a rare event. It is a challenging situation for all involved parties, as the risks and benefits of oncological treatments should be balanced for both the mother and the offspring. This work offers guidance to clinicians regarding the choice of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as well as regarding the management of the pregnancy. Abstract Cancer diagnosis and treatment in pregnant women is a challenging situation. A multidisciplinary network of specialists is required to guide both, the expecting mother and the unborn child through the diagnostic workup and the cytotoxic therapy, by balancing the respective risks a…
