The Symmetry and Predictive Factors in Two-Stage Bilateral Hip Replacement Procedures

2021

Background: Approximately 10–25% of total hip replacement patients undergo a bilateral procedure. The purpose of this study was to compare selected parameters associated with the first and second hip arthroplasty in patients undergoing two-stage treatment due to bilateral hip osteoarthritis and establish the predictive factors for the second procedure. Methods: This study compared the data on bilateral total hip replacement surgeries conducted in the period between 2017 and 2021 (42 patients). The following parameters from the first and second procedure were compared: the prosthetic stem, head, and insert cup size

Searching for the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective potential of natural food and nutritional supplements for ocular health in the …

2021

Adherence to a healthy diet offers a valuable intervention to compete against the increasing cases of ocular diseases worldwide, such as dry eye disorders, myopia progression, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or age macular degeneration. Certain amounts of micronutrients must be daily provided for proper functioning of the visual system, such as vitamins, carotenoids, trace metals and omega-3 fatty acids. Among natural foods, the following have to be considered for boosting eye/vision health: fish, meat, eggs, nuts, legumes, citrus fruits, nuts, leafy green vegetables, orange-colored fruits/vegetables, olives-olive oil, and dairy products. Nutritional supplements have received muc…

Keratoconus stage impact on visual acuity and contrast sensitivity.

2020

Contrast sensitivity decreases in keratoconus subjects even before the decrease is presented at high contrast visual acuity. The aim of our study was to estimate the subject’s contrast sensitivity and visual acuity in different keratoconus stages. In our study, there were included 45 keratoconus subjects (77 eyes) with the first, second and third keratoconus stages. Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity were measured at 3 m with the best possible spectacle correction and without vision correction using FrACT program 3.9.3. In the study, contrast sensitivity was measured at following spatial frequencies – 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 cpd. Contrast sensitivity analyse showed that there was a…

Effect of cooking and legume species upon calcium, iron and zinc uptake by Caco-2 cells

2006

Abstract An in vitro system, consisting of simulated gastrointestinal digestion and Caco-2 cell culture, was used to estimate the uptake of calcium, iron and zinc from white beans, chickpeas and lentils, and the effect of cooking upon uptake, with the ultimate aim of evaluating legumes as a dietary source of the aforementioned minerals. In raw products, differences were observed in the uptake percentages by Caco-2 cells of a same mineral from different legumes, although these were not related to the total mineral content. In the three elements studied, the highest uptake values corresponded to chickpeas. Traditional cooking significantly ( p 0.05 ) increased the uptake (%) of calcium, iron …

Failed Total Hip Arthroplasty: Diagnostic Performance of Conventional MRI Features and Locoregional Lymphadenopathy to Identify Infected Implants.

2020

Background Very little has been published about the diagnostic performance of MRI in total hip arthroplasty (THA) infection. Purpose To determine the diagnostic performance of conventional MRI features and of new lymph nodal indices to identify infection in patients with failed THA. Study type Retrospective. Population In all, 119 patients (66 females; age 66.9 ± 12.4 years) with failed THA. Field strength/sequences Metal artifact reduction sequence (MARS) protocol including short tau inversion recovery and turbo spin-echo T1 - and T2 -weighted sequences at 1.5T. Assessment Patients underwent pelvis MRI prior to failed THA revision. MRIs were reviewed to identify periprosthetic bone destruc…

The predictive role of pelvic magnetic resonance in the follow up of spontaneous or induced puberty in turner syndrome

2018

Abstract Puberty is a critical age for patients with Turner syndrome (TS): infertility is reported to be linked to karyotype and spontaneous puberty and menarche occur in approximately 30% of patients, especially in mosaicism. However, it is not always predictable considering hormonal pattern and pelvic transabdominal ultrasound scan (US). The aim of the study is to compare the accuracy of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and US to evaluate uterine and gonads volume, to visualize the presence of follicles and to predict spontaneous puberty and menarche in girls with TS. In a retrospective study, we evaluated 19 TS patients (age: 9–16 years), who underwent transabdominal pelvic US and pelvic…

Early-stage small-bowel adenocarcinoma: a review of local endoscopic therapy.

2005

Early adenocarcinomas in the small intestine are a rare entity. Most adenocarcinomas in the small intestine are diagnosed at a more advanced stage. After surgical resection, only 3 - 10 % are found in stage T1 and 0 - 3 % in stage Tis (high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia), resulting in an overall 3 - 13 % rate of early-stage small-intestinal adenocarcinomas. The diagnosis of early small-intestinal carcinoma by endoscopy is still very rare, although it will probably improve with the development of new endoscopic techniques. At present there have been only two studies and a few case reports on the treatment of early duodenal carcinoma by endoscopic resection. No major complications such as m…

Does transvaginal color Doppler sonography differentiate between developing and involuting ectopic pregnancies?

1995

The objective of this study was to assess the addition of transvaginal color Doppler imaging to transvaginal ultrasonography and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin values to differentiate between developin and involuting ectopic pregnancies. Forty surgically confirmed ectopic pregnancies were classified into developing or involuting according to histopathologic findings. Results were compared retrospectively with the plasma beta-human chorionic gonadotropin values as well as the resistive index and pulsatility index obtained in corpora lutea and peritrophoblastic flow in serial examinations. Student's t-test was used for comparison of means. Logistic regression analysis was applied to predic…
