Interim Analysis of Overall Survival Per Subgroups in the Prospective, Non-Interventional Insight Study in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma Tre…

2012

ABSTRACT Background The efficacy of Sorafenib in patients (pts) with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been proven in randomized, controlled trials. INSIGHT is a prospective, non-interventional study, conducted in Germany and Austria in pts with HCC. The objectives of this study are the evaluation of safety and efficacy under practice conditions in both hospitals and private practices. Enrollment into INSIGHT is not restricted to a particular tumor stage. Recruitment into the study is ongoing. Methods The second interim analysis (data cut-off 23 FEB 2012) evaluated overall survival and safety data in relevant subgroups. All patients with HCC were observed for the duration of their sorafeni…

Mediterranean Diet and Physical Activity Decrease the Initiation of Cardiovascular Drug Use in High Cardiovascular Risk Individuals: A Cohort Study

2021

Our aim was to assess whether long-term adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) were associated with a lower initiation of cardiovascular drug use. We studied the association between cumulative average of MedDiet adherence and LTPA and the risk of cardiovascular drug initiation in older adults at high cardiovascular risk (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea trial participants) non-medicated at baseline: glucose-lowering drugs (n = 4437), antihypertensives (n = 2145), statins (n = 3977), fibrates (n = 6391), antiplatelets (n = 5760), vitamin K antagonists (n = 6877), antianginal drugs (n = 6837), and cardiac glycosides (n = 6954). One-point increas…

Hidradenitis suppurativa in surgeons' practice: Prevalence and treatment approach according to the Hurley stage in Latvia

2020

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent, debilitating, and frequently misdiagnosed inflammatory skin disease that often requires surgical intervention. To assess the prevalence of HS patients in surgeons' practice and surgeons' approach to treating HS patients, we created a self-administered, Hurley stage-based questionnaire that was distributed during the Latvian Association of Surgeons meeting. Of the total 60 questionnaires distributed, 56 (93%) were collected and 53 (88%) of them were considered valid. Overall, 73.6% of the surgeons confirmed having seen patients with chronic inflamed suppurative lesions in the skin folds during their practice. Median reported number of HS…

Preservation of vitamins content in Cuccìa using an innovative method of processing

2019

Cuccìa is a traditional Sicilian food prepared by boiling whole durum wheat kernels, in water, for many hours. This process destroys the vitamins E and B contents of crude kernels. It was rated a method to prepare the Cuccìa, preserving the vitamin content. Four varieties of durum wheat were processed comparing the traditional cooking method (TR-boiling for 5/6 hours), and an innovative one (IN-grains scarification, germination, and cooking at 50 °C for 2 hours). On soups obtained the content of biotin, niacin and α-amylase activity were determined. ANOVA showed the cooking method influences biotin and niacin content having values from 0.56 and 0.72 ng ml−1 (raw grain) and values close to 0…

Preliminary Estimation of Deoxynivalenol Excretion through a 24 h Pilot Study

2015

A duplicate diet study was designed to explore the occurrence of 15 Fusarium mycotoxins in the 24 h-diet consumed by one volunteer as well as the levels of mycotoxins in his 24 h-collected urine. The employed methodology involved solvent extraction at high ionic strength followed by dispersive solid phase extraction and gas chromatography determination coupled to mass spectrometry in tandem. Satisfactory results in method performance were achieved. The method"s accuracy was in a range of 68%108%, with intra-day relative standard deviation and inter-day relative standard deviation lower than 12% and 15%, respectively. The limits of quantitation ranged from 0.1 to 8 μg/Kg. The matrix effect w…

Surgical treatment for renal cell carcinoma

2010

Renal cell carcinoma is chemoresistent and radio-therapy so that surgical tumour excision of the tumor is the only potentially curative option, either as radical nephrectomy or as nephron sparing surgery. As a result of continuously improving radiological imaging modalities, renal tumours are nowadays detected incidentally at an asymptomatic stage in up to 75 %. The ten-year cancer-specific survival for organ-confined disease (T1, T2) after R0-excision is > 90 %. Moreover, locally extending renal tumours (T3) can be treated successfully with five-year survival rates of > 65 %. In case of tumours in a single kidney or synchronous bilateral tumours, good functional and oncological long-term r…

Clinical Recommendation Radical Trachelectomy for Fertility Preservation in Patients With Early-Stage Cervical Cancer

2012

Radical trachelectomy (RT) is a fertility-sparing procedure with the aim to provide adequate oncological safety to patients with cervical cancer while preserving their fertility. In the current review, indications, development of the procedure, technical aspects, preoperative and postoperative management, and oncological, fertility, and obstetric outcomes are discussed and studied with respect to whether the procedure is performed abdominally or vaginally. Complications of RT, staging, and more conservative alternatives to RT are discussed as well. A systematic MEDLINE search was performed, which yielded 218 articles, of which 75 were selected for further analysis based on the number of pat…
