Molecular Dynamics Computer Simulation of Cooling Rate Effects in a Lennard-Jones Glass

We present the results of a molecular dynamics computer simulation of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture. We simulate a quench of the system from a liquid state at high temperatures to a glass state at zero temperature by coupling the system to a heat bath that has a temperature that decreases linearly (with slope -γ) with time. We investigate how the residual density of the system varies as a function of the cooling rate γ and rationalize our results by means of the dependence of the coordination number of the particles on the cooling rate.
Dynamics of a Supercooled Lennard-Jones System: Qualitative and Quantitative Tests of Mode-Coupling Theory

We present the results of a molecular dynamics computer simulation of a supercooled binary Lennard-Jones mixture. By investigating the temperature dependence of the diffusion constant and of the intermediate scattering function, we show that the ideal version of the mode-coupling theory of the glass transition is able to give a good qualitative description of the dynamics of this system. Using the partial structure factors, as determined from the simulation, as input, we solve the mode-coupling equations in the long time limit. Molecular dynamics simulations of colloids: Supercooled Yukawa systems

We performed molecular dynamics simulations on one and two component Yukawa systems. Cooling the system down and inspecting pair distribution functions (pdf) and bond correlation functions (bcf) we found the one component system to crystallize into a bcc-like lattice rather than an fcc lattice which is the stable phase of the simulated system at low temperatures. Upon cooling the two component system freezes into a glassy state without exhibiting crystalline structure in pdf or bcf. We define particle excess functions which show that spacial fluctuations in the number density of particles of the different components decay quite slowly. Replicas and thin-section electron microscopic studies were made of fractions of linear polyethylene covering the molecular weight range 2.78 × 104 to 6.0 × 106 for a variety of crystallizing conditions. Lamellar crystallites were found under all circumstances; and the supermolecular structure, or crystalline morphology, is in agreement with that previously reported from an analysis of the small-angle light-scattering patterns of the same samples under similar crystallization conditions. Phenomenological approach to compare the crystallization kinetics of isotactic polypropylene and polyamide-6 under pressure

Reliable experimental data for semicrystalline polymers crystallized under pressure are supplied on the basis of a model experiment in which drastic solidification conditions are applied. The influence of the pressure and cooling rate on some properties, such as the density and microhardness, and on the product morphology, as investigated with wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), is stressed. Results for isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples display a lower density and a lower microhardness with increasing pressure over a wide range of cooling rates (from 0.01 to 20 °C/s). Annually resolved and millennium-long reconstructions of large-scale temperature variability are primarily composed of tree ring width (TRW) chronologies. Changes in ring width, however, have recently been shown to bias the ratio between low- and high-frequency signals. To overcome limitations in capturing the full spectrum of past temperature variability, we present a network of 15 maximum latewood density (MXD) chronologies distributed across the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. Independent subsets of continental-scale records consistently reveal high MXD before 1580 and after 1910, with below average values between these periods. Deep ROSAT-HRI observations of the NGC 1399/NGC 1404 region: morphology and structure of the X-ray halo

We present the analysis of a deep (167 ks) ROSAT HRI observation of the cD galaxy NGC 1399 in the Fornax cluster. Using both HRI and, at larger radii, archival PSPC data, we find that the radial behavior of the X-ray surface brightness profile is not consistent with a simple Beta model and suggests instead three distinct components. We use a multi-component bidimensional model to study in detail these three components that we identify respectively with the cooling flow region, the galactic and the cluster halo.
