X-ray emitting MHD accretion shocks in classical T Tauri stars. Case for moderate to high plasma-beta values

AIMS. We investigate the stability and dynamics of accretion shocks in CTTSs, considering the case of beta >= 1 in the post-shock region. In these cases the 1D approximation is not valid and a multi-dimensional MHD approach is necessary. METHODS. We model an accretion stream propagating through the atmosphere of a CTTS and impacting onto its chromosphere, by performing 2D axisymmetric MHD simulations. The model takes into account the stellar magnetic field, the gravity, the radiative cooling, and the thermal conduction (including the effects of heat flux saturation). RESULTS. Application of a radiative cooling model to daily minimum temperature prediction

A model of exponential decrease of temperature is applied to the study of night cooling in an agricultural area of citrus orchards located near the Valentian Coast (Spain). A set of annual average parameters which determine that cooling is obtained by using temperature measurements at different levels during two years. These parameters appear to be representative of the thermal behaviour of the area of study. The attainment of such parameters allows a prediction of the minimum temperatures of the area to an accuracy of £1.5 K, knowing the temperature at sunset and some time later.

The effect of Water on passive cooling systems in the Arab-Norman architecture of the Zisa Palace in Palermo

This paper shows the theories argued by some historians with reference to the working of natural water passive cooling systems employed in the Zisa Complex. Albeit such theories are seminal attempts to understand passive water systems, they have no scientific evidence. Inelastic neutron and low-frequency Raman scattering in a niobium-phosphate glass for Raman gain applications

Abstract We present measurements of the vibrational spectrum of a binary niobium-phosphate glass in the THz frequency range using inelastic neutron and Raman scattering. The spectra of these glasses show a low-frequency enhancement of the vibrational density of states (“boson peak”). Using a recently developed theory of vibrational excitations in disordered solids we are able to reconcile the measured neutron and Raman spectra using fluctuating elastic and Pockels constants as a model concept. As the spontaneous Raman susceptibility is a key parameter for Raman amplification our results suggest a significant gain profile for application of niobium-phosphate glasses in Raman amplifiers.

Reorientational dynamics in simple supercooled liquids

Abstract The geometry of the reorientational dynamics in the van der Waals liquid, toluene, and the hydrogen bond network, glycerol, are compared. Both systems have contributions from small angle fluctuations. In glycerol the fraction of these small angle fluctuations is much larger than in toluene, due to the stronger anisotropic interactions in the former substance. The average reorientational angle in both systems is similar and on the order of 10 ∘ . In addition we analyze the stretching of the rotational correlation functions of rank one and two. Aging in a free-energy landscape model for glassy relaxation

The aging properties of a simple free-energy landscape model for the primary relaxation in supercooled liquids are investigated. The intermediate scattering function and the rotational correlation functions are calculated for the generic situation of a quench from a high temperature to below the glass transition temperature. It is found that the re-equilibration of molecular orientations takes longer than for translational degrees of freedom. The time scale for re-equilibration is determined by that of the primary relaxation as an intrinsic property of the model.

Heterogeneity at the Glass Transition:  Translational and Rotational Self-Diffusion

Self-diffusion coefficients, D, have been measured in the glass forming liquids salol, glycerol, phenolphthaleine dimethyl ether (PDE), cresolphthaleine dimethyl ether (CDE), and ααβ-trinaphthylbenzene (TNB) in the supercooled regime. The NMR static magnetic field gradient technique was applied where D >10-14 m2 s-1 can be attained. The results are similar to previous diffusion experiments where an enhancement of translational diffusion was found in comparison with rotational diffusion and shear viscosity. Various models of spatial heterogeneity are related to a phenomenological environmental fluctuation model in view of recent diffusion and relaxation data close to the glass transition.
