A continuum based fem model for friction stir welding—model development

Although friction stir welding (FSW) has been successfully used to join materials that are difficult-to-weld or unweldeable by fusion welding methods, it is still in its early development stage and, therefore, a scientific knowledge based predictive model is of significant help for thorough understanding of FSW process. Design of the friction stir welding tool using the continuum based FEM model

In friction stir welding (FSW), the welding tool geometry plays a fundamental role in obtaining desirable microstructures in the weld and the heat-affected zones, and consequently improving strength and fatigue resistance of the joint. In this paper, a FSW process with varying pin geometries (cylindrical and conical) and advancing speeds is numerically modeled, and a thermo-mechanically coupled, rigid-viscoplastic, fully 3D FEM analysis able to predict the process variables as well as the material flow pattern and the grain size in the welded joints is performed. The obtained results allow finding optimal tool geometry and advancing speed for improving nugget integrity of aluminum alloys.

Impact of infectious burden on extent and long-term prognosis of atherosclerosis.

Background — Recent findings suggest a causative role of infections in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. In hypothesizing an association between infectious agents and the development of atherosclerosis, we would expect a correlation to the extent of atherosclerosis. Moreover, this effect could be multiplied by the number of pathogens to which an individual had been exposed. Expression Profile of Stress Proteins, Intermediate Filaments, and Adhesion Molecules in Experimentally Denervated and Reinnervated Rat Facial Muscle

The immunohistochemical profiles of ubiquitin, heat shock protein 70, alpha-B-crystallin, desmin, vimentin, neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM), and tenascin in rat facial muscle were studied after permanent denervation by transection of the facial plexus on one side and compared with findings after immediate reinnervation by hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis subsequent to transection on the contralateral side. Levator labii muscle samples were collected sequentially at 2, 6, 7, 10, 20, and 24 weeks after surgery. Mycoplasma pneumonias distribution, epidemiology and prevalence in a triennial survey.

OBJECTIVES. To evaluate: (1) the incidence of pneumonia monthly distribution; (2) the rate of pneumonitis due to Mycoplasma Pneumoniae; (3) the suitability of choosing an empirical-based antibiotic-therapy; (4) the need of a critical revision of Mycoplasma serological data. PATIENTS AND METHODS. We studied 188 patients admitted to the Palermo University Pediatrics Department, from september 1998 to august 2001, with admission diagnosis of pneumonia. RESULTS. The highest incidence of pneumonia was in december and march as in both months 28 cases occurred in the whole period 1998-2001 (average of 9.3 cases per each month).
