A Precursor Route to Supramolecular Oligo(p-phenylene terephthalamide) Block Copolymers
2008
New soluble precursors for the step-wise synthesis of oligo(p-phenylene terephthalamide) block copolymers are described. Kevlar-like aramide oligomers up to the hexamer (six phenyl groups) were prepared in a polymer-analogous manner. Activating the carboxylic-acid-carrying oligomers as carbonyl chlorides while reversibly transforming the aromatic amides into imidoyl chlorides gave access to soluble precursors. The dimer and tetramer precursor were prepared and used in block copolymer synthesis. Single-crystal XRD confirmed the structure of the dimer precursor. Above a critical rod length, the Kevlar-like rod-coil block copolymers show strong aggregation in non-polar solvents such as chlorof…
Hyperbranched-linear-hyperbranched ABA-type block copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) and polyglycerol
2009
BACKGROUND: Until recently, hyperbranched polymers were thought to be ill-defined materials that were not useful as building blocks for well-defined complex polymer architectures. It is a current challenge to develop strategies that offer rapid access to well-defined hyperbranched block copolymers. RESULTS: A convenient three-step protocol for the synthesis of double-hydrophilic hyperbranched–linear–hyperbranched ABA-type triblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) is presented. The Bola-type polymers exhibiting an aliphatic polyether structure were prepared from a linear (lin) linPG-b-PEO-b-linPG precursor triblock. The materials exhibit lo…
Hybrid Lattice Boltzmann/Dynamic Self-Consistent Field Simulations of Microphase Separation and Vesicle Formation in Block Copolymer Systems
2011
We present a hybrid numerical method to introduce hydrodynamics in dynamic self-consistent field (SCF) studies of inhomogeneous polymer systems. It solves a set of coupled dynamical equations: The ...
Radiation grafting functionalization of poly (vinylidene fluoride) to compatibilize its blends with polyolefin ionomers
1998
Blends of a crystalline vinylidene fluoride copolymer (PVDF) and a polyolefin ionomer were produced by melt mixing and characterized by a variety of techniques to examine the effect of increasing the level of salt formation on morphology. The PVDF component was also grafted with methacrylic acid by irradiating the polymer powder and subsequently treating it with an aqueous monomer solution. The effect of neutralizing the acid in both polymer components to produce the corresponding zinc salt was also investigated. Compatibilization was accomplished by the addition of zinc acetyl acetonate (ZnAcAc) to the mixture. This increased the viscosity of the polyolefin ionomer phase, comparable to tha…
Mechanical behavior and structure of single beads of homogeneous and macroporous styrene–divinylbenzene copolymers
1982
The stress–stain and ultimate behavior in compression of homogeneous and macroporous beads of styrene–divinylbenzene copolymers has been investigated in the dry state or in equilibrium with toluene, acetone, methanol, and water. The penetration modulus A indicates sensitively the transition from the glassy into the rubbery state induced by an increase in temperature or swelling. For macroporous copolymers, A of the glassy polymers is mainly determined by the porosity P, while in the rubbery region it primarily depends on the matrix structure (degree of crosslinking and concentration and composition of the diluent). The high value of the slope s of the A vs. P dependence (s ∼ −3) for macropo…
Modelling the hydrogen-bonding interactions in a copolymer/biodegradable homopolymer blend through excess functions
2008
A recent theoretical approach based on the coupling of both the Flory-Huggins (FH) and the Association Equilibria thermodynamic (AET) theories was modified and adapted to study the miscibility properties of a multi- component system formed by two polymers (a proton-donor and a proton-acceptor) and a proton-acceptor solvent, named copolymer(A)/solvent(B)/polymer(C). Compatibility between polymers was mainly attained by hydrogen- bonding between the hydroxyl group on the phenol unit of the poly(styrene-co-vinyl phenol) (PSVPh) and the car- bonyl group of the biodegradable and environmentally friendly poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). However, the self- association of PSVPh and specific interacti…
Architecture, self-assembly and properties of well-defined hybrid polymers based on polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane (POSS)
2013
Abstract Well-defined hybrid polymers based on polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane (POSS) with a variety of architectures have been developed, including telechelic polymers, block copolymers and star-shaped polymers. The synthesis, self-assembly and properties of this kind of materials are reviewed. Well-defined POSS-containing hybrid polymers can be constructed by living polymerization techniques, such as ring-opening polymerization and living free-radical polymerization or the combination of living polymerization and coupling reactions, such as click chemistry and hydrosilylation. The self-assembly behavior of well-defined POSS-containing hybrid polymers is also described in detail. The P…
Effect of adding new phosphazene compounds to poly(butylene terephthalate)/polyamide blends. II: Effect of different polyamides on the properties of …
2006
Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and a sample of polyamide have been melt processed in the presence of two new phosphazene compounds, namely 2,2-dichloro-4,4,6,6-bis[spyro(2',2"-dioxy-1',1"-biphenyl)]cyclotriphosphazene (2Cl-CP) and 2,2-bis(2-methoxy-4-methyleneoxy-phenoxy)-4,4,6,6-bis[spyro(2',2"-dioxy-1',1"-biphenyl)]cyclophosphazene (CP-2EPOX). The blends were prepared by using polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyamide 6,6 (PA66) in 25/75 and 75/25 w/w compositions by using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The materials have been completely characterized from a mechanical, rheological, and morphological point of view. The results indicate that the additives used cause an increase of the ruptur…
Specialty and advanced polymers by carbocationic macromolecular engineering
1993
This study briefly surveys a variety of new advanced polymeric materials and controlled synthetic processes available by carbocationic macromolecular engineering techniques and having potential commercial interest. These recent developments, mainly by living carbocationic polymerization, have led to new opportunities in polymerization process control, and in designing microstructure, functionality, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution (MWD) and thus properties of a wide variety of unique polymer systems. The fundamentals of these new emerging technologies and the novel materials offered by them, such as macromonomers, telechelics, polymers with pendant functional groups (liqui…
Composites of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers with modified magnesium hydroxide-thermo-oxidative ageing
2014
Flame retardant composites must perform their protective roles permanently, also under conditions of intermittent or long-term exposure to sunlight, moisture or increased temperature. The aim of our work was characterization of the thermo-oxidative ageing (90 °C) and the changes in flammability of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer composites with 40 and 60 wt.% of magnesium hydroxide. The neat polymer and its composites were investigated for their thermal (DSC) and structural (FTIR) characteristics as well as their density, melt flow index, tensile properties and combustibility during ageing test. As FTIR results identified the different carbonyl groups in copolymer were created, the highest…
