RAPD differentiation between Borderea pyrenaica and B. chouardii (Dioscoreaceae), two relict endangered taxa

2001

As currently circumscribed, the genus Borderea Mieg. comprises two narrowly distributed European taxa, Borderea pyrenaica (Bub.) Mieg. and B. chouardii (Gaussen) Heslot. An accumulation of facts such as that both species share a very close overall morphology, that only a single population of Borderea chouardii is known, and that they live in contrasting environments has led some authors to suggest that B. chouardii is a mere ecotype of the more widespread B. pyrenaica. We tested this hypothesis using RAPD markers in four populations of Borderea, three of them identified as B. pyrenaica and the other one representing the only known population of B. chouardii. Eleven out of twenty assayed pri…

Schizophrenia polygenic risk score and cannabis use modify psychosis expression in first episode psychosis patients and population controls

2019

AbstractBackgroundDiagnostic categories within the psychosis spectrum are widely used in clinical practice, however psychosis may occur on a continuum. Therefore, we explored whether the continuous distribution of psychotic symptoms across categories is a function of genetic as well as environmental risk factors, such as polygenic risk scores (PRSs) and cannabis use.MethodsAs part of the EU-GEI study, we genotyped first episode psychosis patients (FEP) and population controls, for whom transdiagnostic dimensions of psychotic symptoms or experiences were generated using item response bi-factor modelling. Linear regression was used, separately in patients and controls, to test the association…

Accumulation of plerocercoids of Triaenophorus crassus in the second intermediate host Coregonus lavaretus and their effect on growth of the host

1999

Patterns of accumulation of Triaenophorus crassus in its second intermediate host whitefish Coregonus lavaretus s.l. were studied between 1991 and 1996 from two host populations in two separate areas of Lake Saimaa, Finland. Whitefish were infected commonly with several T. crassus plerocercoids and the parasites were aggregated into the oldest hosts. In one host population the annual parasite accumulation was 0·9 parasites in all host age groups between 3 and 8 years. In the other host population the annual accumulation was 1·6 parasites in 3–5-year-old fish, but increased up to 3 to 4 parasites per year in fish over 5 years old. The increase did not coincide with the period of maturation o…

Predation by signal crayfishPacifastacus leniusculuson fish eggs and its consequences for coregonid recruitment

2015

The character and magnitude of predation by the invasive, ectothermic Pacifastacus leniusculus, a crayfish widely introduced to Europe and Japan from North America, on the eggs of coregonid fishes, vendace Coregonus albula and whitefish Coregonus lavaretus were examined by experimentation, modelling and field data. The present results showed that P. leniusculus has the potential to be very efficient predator of fish eggs under winter conditions, but the predation by P. leniusculus did not significantly decrease production of coregonid larvae during the years with a high P. leniusculus population in the study lake. Hence, the mortality caused by the novel invertebrate predator appeared to co…

Population size estimation of larval coregonids in large lakes: Stratified sampling design with a simple prediction model for vertical distribution

2009

Abstract The lake-specific vertical distribution of larval coregonids was assessed annually in Finnish lakes by bongo net sampling. The effect of inter-annual and inter-lake variation in vertical distributions on population estimates of larval coregonids were analysed in 1999–2008. The vertical distribution of newly hatched vendace ( Coregonus albula (L.)) and European whitefish ( Coregonus lavaretus L. s.l.) larvae was analysed and high inter-annual and lake-specific variation in the larval vertical distribution was found. Generally, in both littoral and pelagic areas, larvae were aggregated near the water surface, mostly in the top 30 cm layer. We compared observed and predicted density e…

The serum copper/zinc ratio in childhood and educational attainment : a population-based study

2016

Background Micronutrients are potentially important determinants of adult outcomes such as educational attainment. Copper and zinc have known effects on several medical conditions and cognitive development. Elevated copper and depressed zinc is a common trace metal imbalance. Methods We estimate the correlation between the copper/zinc ratio (Cu/Zn) in childhood (year 1980) and educational attainment in adulthood (year 2010). We use the Young Finns Study (YFS) combined with the Finnish Linked Employer-Employee Data (FLEED). The regression models account for confounders such as other biomarkers and parental observables. Results We report a sizeable, negative correlation between Cu/Zn and educ…

Does taking additional Maths classes in high school affect academic outcomes?

2023

Several studies in the mathematical education literature show the effect of students’ high school skills in maths on their success at higher levels of education and work. In particular, the importance of maths course taking in US high schools is highlighted to be important for college enrolment and completion. The choice of taking additional maths courses or, as in Italy, of choosing a high-school curriculum with more maths, is not random: it depends on several substantial factors such as gender and socio-economic status. This selection bias implies that the differences in the academic outcomes might be traceable not only to mathematics ability and knowledge. In this paper, the aim is to es…

Impact of Nonlinear Inductor on Efficiency and Power Losses in a SMPS: a Case Study

2022

This paper proposes a comparative analysis focused on losses in two Switched Mode Power Supplies, adopting a linear inductor and an inductor operated up to saturation, respectively. The use of the nonlinear inductor saves weight and cost on the magnetic material, which is of great interest for automotive applications; however, it increases the peak current and can increase losses. The analysis aims to compare, by simulations, the impact on the efficiency of the different current waveforms throughout the converter. The losses are discussed in detail and calculated for each component of the converters.

Should the government pay more to public sector employees? Impact of subjective, stereotypicalwage and core self-evaluations on job satisfaction and …

2018

There are many stereotypes about work in public sector. It is supposedly more stable, less hectic but in the same time offers smaller wages in comparison to a work in private sector. But does it provide more satisfaction to employees? The current study compares work satisfaction (Warr, Cook, & Wall, 1979) and subjective Well-being (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985) as dependent on subjective and objective wage evaluations (Brown, Gardner, Oswald, & Qian, 2008; Walczak, 2017) and Core Self-Evaluations (Judge, Locke, & Durham, 1997; Walczak & Derbis, 2015). On a sample of N=625 employees (of which 18%; n=118 were employed in public sector) an impact of subjective (rather than objective…
