Analytical model for high-strength concrete columns with square cross-section

In the present paper a mechanical model to predict the compressive response of high strength short concrete columns with square cross-section confined by transverse steel is presented. The model allows one to estimate the equivalent confinement pressures exercised by transverse steel during the loading process taking into account of the interaction of the stirrups with the inner core both in the plane of the stirrups and in the space between two successive stirrups. Keeping Track of Samples in Multidisciplinary Fieldwork

We here present methods, tools and results for efficiently collecting metadata and tracking samples collected in the field. The samples and metadata were collected during scientific cruises conducted by amongst others marine biologists, oceanographers, geochemists and marine geologists in the Nansen Legacy project. It is here reported on the successful development and implementation of a system for labeling, tracking and openly publishing metadata from the cruises. The results and tools have been made openly available, as they are suitable for a range of situations, from the individual scientist working in the field to large research missions.

Like other mechanical methods used for the residual stress evaluation on a generic structural component, the Ring-Core Method (RCM) is potentially subjected to various error sources that in some particular experimental conditions can lead to significant errors and/or uncertainties on the computed residual stresses. The accuracy of the residual stresses computed by the RCM can be improved by a proper error analysis that allows the user to correct the systematic errors, as well as to evaluate the remaining stress uncertainty due to the random errors. Design and experimental verification of a smart sensor to measure the energy and power consumption in a one-phase AC line

Abstract A mixed electronic system has been designed to measure the active, apparent and reactive energies delivered to a load in a single-phase AC voltage line. For this purpose a smart sensor (ADE7753 from Analog Devices) was used. A magnetoresistance sensor is used as a current transducer and it is constant current biased by a generalized impedance converter. The magnetoresistance sensor technology provides direct isolation from the mains voltage and ferrite cores are not needed like Hall counterparts. All the measurements provided by the ADE7753 are read through the parallel port of the computer using a LabView application, which will process and present the readings to the user.

In this paper the main Jiles & Atherton parameters of a magnetic material, according to their particular working condition (mainly frequency, temperature and waveform) are calculated by means of a systematic procedure that use PSpice and MathCad. The modelled magnetic material is used for power electronics circuit simulation, which uses magnetic materials, working at frequencies in the region of kH, to construct transformers and inductors. Abstract Core drilling is today one of the most used technique among the group of partially destructive testing methods in reinforced concrete (RC) members. Even if the engineering practice provided to extract cores only in beams, taking samples from columns could be often necessary. In this case, the presence of the hole introduced a geometrical discontinuity in the member, creating a disturbed region.
