Histopathological analysis of soft tissue changes in gingival biopsied specimen from patients with underlying corona virus disease associated mucormy…

2021

Corona Virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) is perhaps the disastrous medical emergencies that has ever hit globally with multiple strains. Amongst various sequelae, mucormycosis may be considered as the most debilitating one. Post COVID-19 mucormycosis is formally regarded as corona virus disease associated mucormycosis (CAM). The aim of the current paper is to present twelve cases of CAM with unique clinical presentation with a detailed histopathological correlation of the gingival biopsied material. Twelve cases of CAM were included in the study who presented initially with non-purulent swelling of the gingiva. The clinic-demographic data pertaining to age, gender, location, laterality and pres…

Myofibrillar disorganization characterizes myopathy of camptocormia in Parkinson’s disease

2011

Camptocormia is a highly disabling syndrome that occurs in various diseases but is particularly associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Although first described nearly 200 years ago, the morphological changes associated with camptocormia are still under debate and the pathophysiology is unknown. We analyzed paraspinal muscle biopsies of 14 PD patients with camptocormia and compared the findings to sex-matched postmortem controls of comparable age to exclude biopsy site-specific changes. Camptocormia in PD showed a consistent lesion pattern composed of myopathic changes with type-1 fiber hypertrophy, loss of type-2 fibers, loss of oxidative enzyme activity, and acid phosphatase reactivity …

Ajan arvoituksia : fiktiivinen ajan kokemus Cormac McCarthyn romaanissa No country for old men

2013

Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani inhimillisen ajan kokemuksen representaatioita Cormac McCarthyn romaanissa No Country for Old Men (2005). Tutkimuksessani selvitän, minkälaisen kuvan teoksen henkilöhahmojen kokemukset antavat ihmisen tavasta kokea aikaa. Lähtökohtanani on Paul Ricœurin ajatus, että fiktio kykenee luomaan ajan kokemuksen variaatioita, joiden avulla lukija voi rikastuttaa omaa ymmärrystään ajallisuudesta. Työn teoriaosuudessa esittelen erilaisia aikakäsityksiä monitieteisestä näkökulmasta. Tärkeimpänä rajanvetona on Ricœuriä seuraten eronteko objektiivisen kosmologisen ajan ja subjektiivisen fenomenologisen ajan välille. Lisäksi tarkastelen kaunokirjallisuuden kykyä ja k…

Erämaan herrat ja orjat : vallantahto ja luonto Cormac McCarthyn romaanissa Blood Meridian

2011

Analysoin tutkielmassani Cormac McCarthyn vuonna 1985 ilmestynyttä romaania Blood Meridian. Lähestyn teoksen luontosuhdetta useista näkökulmista, joista keskeisin on Friedrich Nietzschen vallantahdon käsitteen mahdollistama. Blood…

Forty-one recent cases of invasive zygomycosis from a global clinical registry.

2009

Background Invasive zygomycosis accounts for a significant proportion of all invasive fungal diseases (IFD), but clinical data on the clinical course and treatment response are limited. Patients and methods Fungiscope-A Global Rare Fungal Infection Registry is an international university-based case registry that collects data of patients with rare IFD, using a web-based electronic case form at www.fungiscope.net. Results Forty-one patients with invasive zygomycosis from central Europe and Asia were registered. The most common underlying conditions were malignancies (n = 26; 63.4%), diabetes mellitus (n = 7; 17.1%) and solid organ transplantation (n = 4; 9.8%). Diagnosis was made by culture …

Post-bronchoscopy fatal endobronchial hemorrhage in a woman with bronchopulmonary mucormycosis: a case report

2010

Abstract Introduction During infection, Mucorales fungi invade major blood vessels, leading to extensive necrosis, and in cases of extensive pulmonary disease, bleeding into the lungs may occur. Case presentation We report an unexpected event of post-bronchoscopy fatal endobronchial hemorrhage in a 62-year-old HIV-negative Italian woman with well controlled diabetes mellitus who presented with diffuse cavitated pulmonary lesions. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed bilateral obstruction of the segmental bronchi. Fatal massive bleeding occurred after standard biopsy procedures. Histologic examination showed that the hyphae were more deeply colored by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) than by other stains…

“Cittadinanza europea e liberalismo nazionale”

2007

Camptocormia associated with focal myositis in multiple-system atrophy

2005

Camptocormia (CC) or pronounced forward flexion of the trunk is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease. We describe 2 patients with probable, respectively possible multiple-system atrophy and CC. Magnetic resonance imaging of the erector trunci showed focal patchy hyperintensities with gadolinium enhancement and muscle biopsy was indicative of variably pronounced focal myositis. CC was progressive and the major handicap for both patients after 1 and 1.5 years of follow-up, respectively. The therapeutic response was poor. Similarities with the dropped-head syndrome suggest that the muscle pathology may be either the primary cause of CC, a focal reaction to the CC posture, or a coincident sy…

Non-neoplasic and non-syndromic palatal perforations. Presentation of 5 cases and systematic review of the literature

2021

Background Palatal perforations not associated with syndromes or neoplasms are rare lesions whose frequency has increased recently. However, their clinical and demographic characteristics have not been fully described. Therefore, this report aimed to establish the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with non-syndromic and non-neoplastic palatal perforations. Material and Methods The file of an oral medicine teaching clinic from January 2004 to December 2018 was reviewed to identify and isolate all cases with a diagnosis of palatal perforation. Cases with a diagnosis of palatal perforation related to congenital alteration, syndrome, or neoplasia were excluded. Age, sex, medi…
