Cranial nerve function in workers exposed to polychlorinated dioxins and furans

2002

OBJECTIVE: To look for possible effects of polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/F) on cranial nerve function. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical and neurophysiological examinations [visual and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (VEP and BAEP), blink reflex] in 121 PCDD/F exposed workers of one pesticide producing plant. RESULTS: BAEP abnormalities were more frequent in workers with chloracne (6 of 33 workers, 18.2%) than in those without chloracne (7 of 84, 8.3%), but this was not statistically significant (chi2: 2.33). VEP abnormalities were seen in one worker with and two without chloracne. Clinically visual functions were normal except in one worker, who was amaurotic since birth. Blin…

Mitomycin C bei oberflächlichen Hornhautablationen mit dem Excimer-Laser: Eigene Erfahrungen und Literaturübersicht

2005

Haze formation with loss of corneal transparency and surface irregularities and myopic regression are the major complications after corneal refractive surface surgery. The use of mitomycin C (MMC) with its antibiotic and antineoplastic properties is intended to inhibit wound healing mechanisms leading to subepithelial fibrosis. We report the use of MMC to achieve visual rehabilitation in the re-treatment of 3 eyes of 2 patients following refractive corneal surgery. According to the literature, the local use of MMC 0.02 % for 2 minutes is safe and enables one to treat and prevent stromal haze and myopic regression and allows a reduction of the postoperative topical pharmacotherapy. Role of the tear film in the optical quality of the human eye.

2007

This paper reviews recent studies of the role of the tear film in the optical quality of the eye. Recent investigations focus on the dynamics of the tear film after a blink and its important role in the optical quality of the eye. The results in this review were used in an attempt to understand the optical and visual impact of tear-film breakup in normal eyes and dry eyes. It was noted that patients with dry-eye syndrome have large optical aberrations compared with those in normal eyes, which may be the cause of blurry vision associated with the syndrome. In addition, instillation of artificial tears reduces optical aberrations and thus improves the optical quality of vision in these patien…

Anterior chamber depth measurement in teenagers. Comparison of two techniques

2013

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the anterior chamber depth (ACD) in teenagers using two different devices: partial coherence interferometry IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec) and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (Visante TM OCT, Carl Zeiss Meditec) and to evaluate the degree of agreement between ACD measurements carried out by both instruments. Methods: In this prospective study 68 eyes of 34 emmetropic Caucasic patients (18 girls and 16 boys) were analysed. ACD was measured from the anterior corneal surface to anterior surface of the crystalline lens. For each age the ACD size was calculated and the difference between IOLMaster and Visante-OCT measurements was analy…

Cerebrovascular Brainstem Diseases with Isolated Cranial Nerve Palsies

2002

There is a significant number of individual patients with cranial nerve palsies as the sole manifestation of MRI- and, less frequently, CT-documented small brainstem infarctions or hemorrhages. The 3rd and 6th nerves are most commonly involved and, less frequently, the 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th nerves. An intra-axial basis for such lesions may be underestimated if the diagnosis is based solely on MRI. The electrophysiologic abnormalities indicating brainstem lesions may be independent of MRI-documented morphological lesions. This paper reviews the literature on cerebrovascular brainstem diseases manifesting as isolated cranial nerve palsies. It supports the concept that small pontine and mesen…

Interstitial Pregnancy: A 'Road Map' of Surgical Treatment Based on a Systematic Review of the Literature.

2014

An electronic search concerning the surgical approach in cases of interstitial pregnancy from January 2000 to May 2013 has been carried out. Fifty three studies have been retrieved and included for statistical analysis. Conservative and radical surgical treatments in 354 cases of interstitial pregnancy are extensively described. Hemostatic techniques have been reported as well as clinical criteria for the medical approach. Surgical outcome in conservative versus radical treatment were similar. When hemostatic techniques were used, lower blood losses and lower operative times were recorded. Conversion to laparotomy involved difficulties in hemostasis and the presence of persistent or multipl…

Corneal opacity and copper levels of the Lewis syndrome after systemic chemotherapy

2020

Abstract Purpose To report a female patient of biclonal Lewis syndrome which consists of a trias: biclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, paraproteinemic keratopathy in form of a brownish discoid opacification at the level of Descemet's membrane and hypercupremia. After several years there was a conversion to multiple myeloma. Systemic chemotherapy led to a complete remission of multiple myeloma and to a normalization of the copper level in the blood that lasted five years. The corneal opacification remained unchanged. Observations A currently 66-year-old woman suffered from biclonal Lewis syndrome. On both eyes there is a central discoid yellow-brownish discoloration in the Pre-D…

Prevalence of dry eye disease in elderly individuals of the French population (the MONTRACHET Study)

2013

Purpose To report the prevalence of dry eye in a large population-based sample of French individuals older than 75 years. Methods About 9000 individuals 65 years and older were included in the 3C cohort study since 1999 in 3 French cities (Bordeaux, Dijon and Montpellier). In Dijon, an additional ophthalmic examination was performed 10 years after the initial inclusions to assess the relation between systemic age-related diseases and eye diseases in the MONTRACHET Study (Maculopathy Optic Nerve nuTRition neurovAsCular and HEarT diseases). Dry eye symptoms were collected with self reported history of dry eye symptoms, use of topical medications and evaluated by the Ocular Surface Disease Ind…
