Oral and Vaginal Epithelial Cell Lines Bind and Transfer Cell-Free Infectious HIV-1 to Permissive Cells but Are Not Productively Infected
2014
The majority of HIV-1 infections worldwide are acquired via mucosal surfaces. However, unlike the vaginal mucosa, the issue of whether the oral mucosa can act as a portal of entry for HIV-1 infection remains controversial. To address potential differences with regard to the fate of HIV-1 after exposure to oral and vaginal epithelium, we utilized two epithelial cell lines representative of buccal (TR146) and pharyngeal (FaDu) sites of the oral cavity and compared them with a cell line derived from vaginal epithelium (A431) in order to determine (i) HIV-1 receptor gene and protein expression, (ii) whether HIV-1 genome integration into epithelial cells occurs, (iii) whether productive viral in…
A fluorescence retrieval method for the flex sentinel-3 tandem mission
2014
A new fluorescence retrieval method is proposed to support ESA's 8th Earth Explorer Fluorescence EXplorer (FLEX) candidate mission. Most hyperspectral fluorescence retrieval algorithms available in the literature are very sensitive to true reflectance modelization and/or they assume the atmospheric status as known. The proposed algorithm delivers the retrieval of full fluorescence spectrum at canopy level by using only Top Of Atmosphere (TOA) radiances as input. The proposed method starts with (1) the atmospheric correction of TOA radiances, characterizing the state of the atmosphere without assuming any a-priori classification on aerosols models, (2) performing a first estimation of fluore…
Accuracy of an Affordable Smartphone-Based Teledermoscopy System for Color Measurements in Canine Skin
2020
Quality smartphone cameras and affordable dermatoscopes have enabled teledermoscopy to become a popular medical and veterinary tool for analyzing skin lesions such as melanoma and erythema. However, smartphones acquire images in an unknown RGB color space, which prevents a standardized colorimetric skin analysis. In this work, we supplemented a typical veterinary teledermoscopy system with a conventional color calibration procedure, and we studied two mid-priced smartphones in evaluating native and erythematous canine skin color. In a laboratory setting with the ColorChecker, the teledermoscopy system reached CIELAB-based color differences &Delta
Challenges in the atmospheric characterization for the retrieval of spectrally resolved fluorescence and PRI region dynamics from space
2021
Abstract In the coming years, Earth Observation missions like the FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) will acquire the radiance signal from the visible to the near-infrared at a very high spectral resolution, enabling exciting prospects for new insights in satellite-based photosynthetic studies. In this context, the process of de-coupling atmospheric and vegetation-related spectral signatures will become essential to guarantee a reliable estimation of the vegetation photosynthetic activity from space. Dynamic changes related to the vegetation photosynthetic status result in subtle contributions to the top of atmosphere radiance signal, e.g. due to the emission of the solar-induced chlorophyll fluo…
Coupled retrieval of aerosol optical thickness, columnar water vapor and surface reflectance maps from ENVISAT/MERIS data over land
2008
An algorithm for the derivation of atmospheric parameters and surface reflectance data from MEdium Resolution Imaging Specrometer Instrument (MERIS) on board ENVIronmental SATellite (ENVISAT) images has been developed. Geo-rectified aerosol optical thickness (AOT), columnar water vapor (CWV) and spectral surface reflectance maps are generated from MERIS Level-1b data over land. The algorithm has been implemented so that AOT, CWV and reflectance products are provided on an operational manner, making no use of ancillary parameters apart from those attached to MERIS products. For this reason, it has been named Self-Contained Atmospheric Parameters Estimation from MERIS data (SCAPE-M). The fund…
Spectral calibration and atmospheric correction of ultra-fine spectral and spatial resolution remote sensing data. Application to CASI-1500 data
2007
Imaging spectrometers operating in the solar spectrum measure the upwelling reflected solar radiation, and are an important tool in the bio/geochemical characterization of the Earth system. Surface reflectance is usually the starting point for the retrieval of biophysical parameters from remote measurements. Reliable radiometric and spectral calibrations and accurate atmospheric correction are mandatory in the interpretation of the surface reflectance. A complete surface reflectance retrieval scheme specifically designed for ultra-fine spectral resolution (bandwidth from 10 to 2 nm) and spatial resolution (pixel size less than 10 m) imaging spectrometers is presented in this work. The asses…

The size of Simes’ global test for discrete test statistics
1999
Abstract To increase the power of the Bonferroni–Holm procedure several modified Bonferroni procedures have been proposed (for example, Hochberg, 1988. Biometrika 75, 800–802; Hommel, 1988. Biometrika 75, 383–386), which are based on Simes’ global test (Simes, 1986. Biometrika 73, 751–754). By several simulation studies which, in particular, considered multinormal test statistics, it has been suggested that the Simes test is a level α test. However, an exact proof exists for only few situations one of them assuming independence of test statistics. We studied the behaviour of Simes’ test for discrete test statistics. Due to discreteness one can expect more conservative decisions whereas depe…
An alternative representation of Altham's multiplicative-binomial distribution
1998
Abstract Cox (1972) introduced a log-linear representation for the joint distribution of n binary-dependent responses. Altham (1978) derived the distribution of the sum of such responses, under a multiplicative, rather than log-linear, representation and called it multiplicative-binomial. We propose here an alternative form of the multiplicative-binomial, which is derived from the original Cox's representation and is characterized by intuitively meaningful parameters, and compare its first two moments with those of the standard binomial distribution.
