Non-linear Correlation Coefficients for pushover analysis
2013
Aiming to put forward an improvement on Multimodal Pushover Analysis, a modified version of the modal correlation rule that takes into account the non-linear behavior of structures is proposed. The modification is primarily based on using the correlation coefficients consistent with the mechanical and dynamical properties of the hysteretic oscillators utilized in the MPA method, i.e. determined taking into account the second order statistics pertinent to the non-linear oscillators. Initially, the new correlation coefficients are evaluated by Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS), assuming a spectrum-compatible representation of the seismic input. The results of a large numerical parametric analysis…
A Quantum-Inspired Classifier for Early Web Bot Detection
2022
This paper introduces a novel approach, inspired by the principles of Quantum Computing, to address web bot detection in terms of real-time classification of an incoming data stream of HTTP request headers, in order to ensure the shortest decision time with the highest accuracy. The proposed approach exploits the analogy between the intrinsic correlation of two or more particles and the dependence of each HTTP request on the preceding ones. Starting from the a-posteriori probability of each request to belong to a particular class, it is possible to assign a Qubit state representing a combination of the aforementioned probabilities for all available observations of the time series. By levera…
Dissimilarity Measures for the Identification of Earthquake Focal Mechanisms
2013
This work presents a study about dissimilarity measures for seismic signals, and their relation to clustering in the particular problem of the identification of earthquake focal mechanisms, i.e. the physical phenomena which have generated an earthquake. Starting from the assumption that waveform similarity implies similarity in the focal parameters, important details about them can be determined by studying waveforms related to the wave field produced by earthquakes and recorded by a seismic network. Focal mechanisms identification is currently investigated by clustering of seismic events, using mainly cross-correlation dissimilarity in conjunction with hierarchical clustering algorithm. By…
Improving Harris corner selection strategy
2011
This study describes a corner selection strategy based on the Harris approach. Corners are usually defined as interest points for which intensity variation in the principal directions is locally maximised, as response from a filter given by the linear combination of the determinant and the trace of the autocorrelation matrix. The Harris corner detector, in its original definition, is only rotationally invariant, but scale-invariant and affine-covariant extensions have been developed. As one of the main drawbacks, corner detector performances are influenced by two user-given parameters: the linear combination coefficient and the response filter threshold. The main idea of the authors' approa…
Standard mechanical testing is inadequate for the mechanical characterisation of shape-memory alloys: Source of errors and a new corrective approach
2022
Thanks to its unique behaviour characterised by a superelastic response, Nitinol has now become the material of preference in a number of critical applications, especially in the area of medical implants. However, the reversible phase transformation producing its exceptional comportment is also responsible for a number of phenomena that make its mechanical characterisation particularly complex, by hindering the assumptions at the very basis of common uniaxial tensile testing. This necessarily reduces the level of safety and design optimization of current applications, which rely on incorrect mechanical parameters. In this study, the spurious effects introduced by the unconventional material…
IMPLEMENTAZIONE DI TECNICHE DI TERMOGRAFIA ATTIVA IRNDT SU COMPOSITI GRP MEDIANTE LA DEPOSIZIONE DI IMPULSI TERMICI DI LUNGA DURATA
2011
Experimental evaluation of through-the-thickness stress distribution in transverse crack tension test samples
2015
Transverse Crack Tension (TCT) samples represent an alternative to End Notched Flexure configurations for the characterization of pure mode II fracture toughness of Fibre Reinforced Polymer composites. TCT is supposed to reproduce a pure Mode II failure mechanism while avoiding the frictional energy dissipation between the flanks of a starter crack. The TCT geometry is that of a unidirectional tensile sample where a number of embedded plies, centered on the middle plane, are cut in the transverse fibres direction. The tensile loading should then activate four symmetric fronts of mode II delamination from the transverse cut tips. The present work describes the implementation of two full fiel…
Correlated Channel Model for terrestrial Free Space Optics and project specifications evaluation of LT code in OOK modulation
2011
Free Space Optics is a wireless line-of-sight communication system able to offer good bandwidth performance as well as straightforward installation and relocation. So that it represents a modern technology that allow to realize large bandwidth communication particularly when it is not possible to employ physical cable or radio technologies. Examples of FSO applications are: wireless backaul, fiber backup, temporary links, metro network extension and last mile access[1]. FSO is based on optical signals propagation in air and that is why it suffers of impairments which depend on atmospheric conditions. In detail, FSO suffers of scattering (i. e. Rayleigh and Mie) losses, absorption and scinti…
Prnu Pattern Alignment for Images and Videos Based on Scene Content
2019
This paper proposes a novel approach for registering the PRNU pattern between different camera acquisition modes by relying on the imaged scene content. First, images are aligned by establishing correspondences between local descriptors: The result can then optionally be refined by maximizing the PRNU correlation. Comparative evaluations show that this approach outperforms those based on brute-force and particle swarm optimization in terms of reliability, accuracy and speed. The proposed scene-based approach for PRNU pattern alignment is suitable for video source identification in multimedia forensics applications.
