SURFACE AND MECHANISTIC PROPERTIES OF RECYCLED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES
2019
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Problem Often, when the characteristics of a bituminous mixture are analised, there are major differences between in-lab and in-situ results. This is due to the fact that the procedures and techniques implemented during the design phase (in lab) may be different from those used on site. Then, is very important to be able to predict the main properties of a mixture particularly when innovative materials are used. For example, when crumb rubber is used, phisical and volumetric properties of mixes may change over time, in particular due to the swelling phenomenon that it alters different properties of the mixture (e.g., viscosity). This study aims to investigate the main aspe…
Colonic stenting in acutely obstructed left-sided colon cancer Clinical evaluation and cost analysis.
2015
This retrospective study aims to evaluate clinical and cost effectiveness of colonic stenting as a bridge to surgery and as a palliative treatment in acutely obstructed left-sided colon cancer.Onehundred fortyfour patients were collected between 2006 and 2012, with acute left-sided malignant colonic obstruction with no evidence of peritonitis: 96 patients underwent surgical treatment, 48 underwent decompressive stenting. For the stenting we used self-expandable metallic stent in nitinol.Patients who had successful colonic stenting were 40, 8 underwent elective surgery within 10 days, 32 decompression stenting had only palliative intent. in 8/48 patients subjected to stenting decompression t…
Evaluating resistance to Bt Toxin Cry1Ab by F-2 Screen in European populations of Ostrinia nubilalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)
2010
The large-scale cultivation of transgenic crops producing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins have already lead to the evolution of Bt resistance in some pest populations targeted by these crops. We used the F2 screening method for further estimating the frequency of resistance alleles of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), to Bt maize, Zea mays L., producing the Cry1Ab toxin. In France, Germany, and Italy, 784, 455, and 80 lines of European corn borer were screened for resistance to Mon810 maize, respectively. In Slovakia, 26 lines were screened for resistance to the Cry1Ab toxin. The cost of F2 screen performed in the four countries varied from U.…
One year of free school fruit in Norway-7 years of follow-up
2015
Background It is important that health-promoting efforts result in sustained behavioural changes, preferably throughout life. However, only a very few intervention studies evaluate long term follow up. Objective The aim of the present study is to evaluate the overall and up to seven years effect of providing daily one piece of fruit or vegetable (FV) for free for one school year. Methods A total of 38 randomly drawn elementary schools from two counties in Norway participated in the Fruit and Vegetables Make the Marks project. Baseline (2001) and follow-up surveys were conducted in May 2002, 2005 and 2009 (n = 320 with complete data) to assess FV and unhealthy snack intake. Mixed models were…
Economic evaluation of a guided and unguided internet-based CBT intervention for major depression: Results from a multicenter, three-armed randomized…
2017
Depression is one of the most common mental disorders and will become one of the leading causes of disability in the world. Internet-based CBT programs for depression have been classified as well established following the American Psychological Association criteria for empirically supported treatments. The aim of this study is to analyze the cost effectiveness at 12-month follow-up of the Internet-based CBT program Smiling is fun with (LITG) and without psychotherapist support (TSG) compared to usual care. The perspective used in our analysis is societal. A sample of 296 depressed patients (mean age of 43.04 years; 76% female; BDI-II mean score = 22.37) from primary care services in four Sp…
Result and cost of hepatic chemoembolisation with drug eluting beads in 21 patients.
2012
Abstract Purpose The aim of our study was to assess the results and cost of a treatment strategy involving transarterial chemoembolisation with drug eluting beads (DEB-TACE) in patients with unresectable non-metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients and methods This study included all patients treated with DEB-TACE in our hospital between January 2009 and December 2010. All patients received DEB-TACE on demand and were evaluated after each session. Results Twenty-one patients received an average of 1.3 sessions. The median time to treatment discontinuation and median progression-free survival was 181 days and 295 days, respectively. Toxicity caused treatment discontinuation in thr…
Postoperative Costs Associated With Outcomes After Cardiac Surgery With Extracorporeal Circulation: Role of Antithrombin Levels
2012
Objective: To study the impact on postoperative costs of a patient's antithrombin levels associated with outcomes after cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation. Design: An analytic decision model was designed to estimate costs and clinical outcomes after cardiac surgery in a typical patient with low antithrombin levels (= 63.7%). The data used in the model were obtained from a literature review and subsequently validated by a panel of experts in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. Setting: Multi-institutional (14 Spanish hospitals). Participants: Consultant anesthesiologists. Measurements and Main Results: A sensitivity analysis of extreme scenarios was carried out to assess the impact o…
Outpatient endovascular aortic aneurysm repair: Experience in 100 consecutive patients
2013
OBJECTIVES:: To present the safety, feasibility, costs, and patient satisfaction of outpatient endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). BACKGROUND:: Our experience in more than 1000 patients indicated that in technically uncomplicated EVAR procedures, the only need for hospitalization was for access vessel complications (bleeding or occlusion) requiring secondary procedures. These complications could always be identified within the first 3 hours after EVAR. METHODS:: Two-center retrospective analysis of prospectively gathered data on 100 consecutive elective outpatient EVAR cases (Outpt EVAR). Inclusion criteria for Outpt EVAR were as follows: asymptomatic clinical state, informed consent, trav…
Active packaging films with natural antioxidants to be used in meat industry: A review.
2018
Spoilage of meat products during processing, distribution and exposure in the markets have an important negative impact on meat industry from an economic point of view. Two of the main problems of meat and products during processing and subsequent storage are lipid oxidation and deterioration due to microorganism growth. In this context, several packaging alternatives have been developed by meat industry in order to limit these losses and to extend the meat products´ shelf life. Over the last years, the use of active packaging has been proposed as an alternative to traditional packaging. The principle of active packaging, particularly antioxidant active packaging, consists of including acti…
