2016

This paper discusses the idea that the gap regarding the dowry in Gaius’ Institutes is due to the fact that Gaius intentionally did not deal with this subject because he considered it as 'ius singulare' and that this omission was filled in by a 'liber singularis' outside the Institutes. The existence of a "didactic system" made up of the Gaius’ Institutes and four 'libri singulares' for the classical age of Roman Law is also disputed.

An antler sickle from the Neolithic site of Costamar at Cabanes (Castellón) on the Mediterranean Spanish coast

2012

Archaeological excavations at the settlement of Costamar between 2006 and 2008 by the Fundació Marina d'Or uncovered an area of 57 905m² containing 683 archaeological features belonging to Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iberian, Roman, Islamic, late medieval, modern and contemporary times. The Neolithic features belong to two phases. The first, with 203 storage pits, is characterised by the presence of pottery with incised-impressed decoration combined with plastic decoration and pigmentation with red ochre. One outstanding nearly complete vessel is decorated with an anthropomorphic motif. This phase has been dated by a cattle bone (Bos Taurus) to 5996±38 (4990–4790 cal BC at 2σ) and by a grain of …

Sequential Hepatogenic Transdifferentiation of Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells: Relevance of Different Extracellular Signaling Molecules, Transcrip…

2009

Adipose tissue contains a mesenchymal stein cell (MSC) population Known as adipose-derived stein cells (ASCs) capable of differentiating into different cell types. Our aim was to induce hepatic transdifferentiation of ASCs by sequential exposure to several combinations of cytokines, growth factors, and hormones. The most efficient hepatogenic protocol includes fibroblastic growth factors (FGF) 2 and 4 and epidermal growth factor (EGF) (step 1), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), FGF2, FGF4, and nicotinamide (Nic) (step 2), and oncostatin M (OSM), dexamethasone (Dex), and insulin-tranferrin-selenium (step 3). This protocol activated transcription factors [GATA6, Hex, CCAAT/enhancer binding prot…

The coast of Altavilla Milicai east of Palermo. Story of a forgotten coastal landscape between illegal building, architectural-landscape emergencies …

2017

"Palermo - Barcellona: così simili, così distanti" in "Mediterraneo – Città, culture, ambiente, governance, migranti"

2007

Metastatic seeding of colon adenocarcinoma manifesting as synchronous breast and chest wall localization: report of a case.

2011

Colon carcinoma rarely metastasizes to the breast and it is usually associated with a poor prognosis. Even rarer is metastatic seeding of colon cancer cells in an intramammary location after surgery. Including a primary breast malignancy in the differential diagnosis of such cases is mandatory. We report a rare case of double seeding implantation of colon adenocarcinoma inside the breast parenchyma and intercostal muscles 6 years after resection of a pulmonary metastasis from colon adenocarcinoma. The metastasis was revealed by the presence of bone metaplasia in the intercostal muscles. We discuss how negative immunostaining for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and HER-2, along w…

Nonlinear Analysis of Phase-locked Loop-Based Circuits

2013

Main problems of simulation and mathematical modeling of high-frequency signals for analog Costas loop and for analog phase-locked loop (PLL) are considered. Two approachers which allow to solve these problems are considered. In the first approach, nonlinear models of classical PLL and classical Costas loop are considered. In the second approach, engineering solutions for this problems are described. Nonlinear differential equations are derived for both approaches.

Biosilicification of loricate choanoflagellate: organic composition of the nanotubular siliceous costal strips of Stephanoeca diplocostata.

2010

SUMMARY Loricate choanoflagellates (unicellular, eukaryotic flagellates; phylum Choanozoa) synthesize a basket-like siliceous lorica reinforced by costal strips (diameter of approximately 100 nm and length of 3 μm). In the present study, the composition of these siliceous costal strips is described, using Stephanoeca diplocostata as a model. Analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), coupled with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), indicate that the costal strips comprise inorganic and organic components. The organic, proteinaceous scaffold contained one major polypeptide of mass 14 kDa that reacted with wheat germ agglutinin. Polyclonal antibodies were raised that allowed …
