Preoperative, Intraoperative and Postoperative Corticosteroid Use as an Adjunctive Treatment for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment

2020

The treatment for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is surgery, including pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and scleral buckling (SB). Despite surgical advances, degeneration of the photoreceptors and post-operative complications, such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), often occurs as the result of inflammation, preventing complete visual recovery or causing RRD recurrence. There is increasing evidence that in the presence of RRD, the activation of inflammatory processes occurs and the surgery itself induces an inflammatory response. This comprehensive review focuses on the use of different formulations of corticosteroids (CCS), as an adjunctive treatment to surgery, either PPV or S…

Predicting Lung Deposition of Extrafine Inhaled Corticosteroid-Containing Fixed Combinations in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease U…

2021

Background: Functional respiratory imaging (FRI) is a computational fluid dynamics-based technique using three-dimensional models of human lungs and formulation profiles to simulate aerosol deposition. Methods: FRI was used to evaluate lung deposition of extrafine beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP)/formoterol fumarate (FF)/glycopyrronium bromide (GB) and extrafine BDP/FF delivered through pressurized metered dose inhalers and to compare results with reference gamma scintigraphy data. FRI combined high-resolution computed tomography scans of 20 patients with moderate-to-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (mean forced expiratory volume in 1 second 42% predicted) with in silico comput…

Use of asthma medication during pregnancy and risk of specific congenital anomalies: A European case-malformed control study.

2015

Background: Pregnant women with asthma need to take medication during pregnancy. Objective: We sought to identify whether there is an increased risk of specific congenital anomalies after exposure to antiasthma medication in the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods: We performed a population-based case-malformed control study testing signals identified in a literature review. Odds ratios (ORs) of exposure to the main groups of asthma medication were calculated for each of the 10 signal anomalies compared with registrations with nonchromosomal, nonsignal anomalies as control registrations. In addition, exploratory analyses were done for each nonsignal anomaly. The data set included 76,249 reg…

The intermediate role of 18-hydroxycorticosteroids in aldosterone biosynthesis.

1968

Severe Brochostenosis by Oral Propafenone Immediately After Commencing Treatment

2011

Propafenone is a membrane-stabilizing agent belonging to a subgroup of the Vaughan Williams class I antidysrhythmic agents, structurally resembling propranolol and characterized by weaker beta-blocking activity. Despite respiratory complications having been reported as examples of side effects, very few reports have been published in the literature. We describe the case of an elderly woman with a history of hypertension and allergy to Parietaria, grass, olive, mites, and with periodic asthmatic manifestations, for whom the administration of oral propafenone for recurrent supraventricular dysrhythmia was associated with the sudden onset of severe bronchostenosis.A 78-year-old woman was freque…
