Fission in238U+238U collisions below the Coulomb barrier

Integral fission cross sections in the system238U+238U were measured at beam energies below the interaction barrierVC. Scattering angle dependent probabilities and integral cross sections for Coulomb fission were calculated. It is concluded that earlier observed discrepancies between measured and calculated angular distributions for the one-neutron transfer product239U cannot be explained by sequential fission. Multi-nucleon transfer induced fission is observed down to energies (0.90±0.02)×VC.
Excitation functions for production of heavy actinides from interactions ofCa40andCa48ions withCm248

Excitation functions have been measured for production of isotopes of Bk through Fm in bombardments of /sup 248/Cm with 234- to 294-MeV /sup 40/Ca ions and with 239- to 318-MeV /sup 48/Ca ions. The maxima of the isotopic distributions for these elements occur at only 2 to 3 mass numbers larger for /sup 48/Ca than for /sup 40/Ca reactions. The shapes of the distributions and the half-widths of about 2.5 mass numbers are quite similar to those observed previously for reactions of /sup 16/O, /sup 18/O, /sup 20/Ne, and /sup 22/Ne with /sup 248/Cm. Production of dianionic and trianionic noble metal clusters in a Penning trap

Abstract Metal clusters, Aun−, Agn−, and Cun−, from a laser vaporization source are transferred to a Penning trap and subjected to a bath of simultaneously stored electrons. After some reaction period multiply charged anionic gold, silver, and copper clusters are observed if the clusters under investigation are large enough. The cluster sizes for the onset of the formation of dianions and trianions are compared to a charged sphere model. The description of the experimental findings is largely improved if the repulsive Coulomb barrier is taken into account which prevents autodetachment of the surplus electrons on the experimental time scale of a second.
“Safe” Coulomb Excitation ofMg30

We report on the first radioactive beam experiment performed at the recently commissioned REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN in conjunction with the highly efficient γ spectrometer MINIBALL. Using Mg-30 ions accelerated to an energy of 2.25 MeV/u together with a thin Ni-nat target, Coulomb excitation of the first excited 2(+) states of the projectile and target nuclei well below the Coulomb barrier was observed. From the measured relative deexcitation γ-ray yields the B(E2;0(gs)(+)R 2(1)(+)) value of Mg-30 was determined to be 241(31)e(2) fm(4). The “screening and renormalization” approach allows for a mathematically correct incorporation, in three-body scattering theory, of the long-ranged Coulomb interaction between charged particles. It is based on first calculating the transition amplitudes using screened Coulomb potentials. Then, after renormalization the zero-screening limit, leading to the amplitudes pertaining to unscreened Coulomb potentials, is performed numerically. International audience; The overlap in the mass symmetric region of the reaction products from fusion-fission and quasi-fission complicates the assignment of symmetric events to complete fusion on the basis of the mass distribution alone. Additional observables, besides mass distribution, should be used. The method proposed here relies on the fact that fusion-fission and quasifission are characterized by a different timescale.
