Coulomb Excitation of Neutron-Rich Zn Isotopes: First Observation of the21+State inZn80

Neutron-rich, radioactive Zn isotopes were investigated at the Radioactive Ion Beam facility REX-ISOLDE (CERN) using low-energy Coulomb excitation. The energy of the 2(1)+ state in 78Zn could be firmly established and for the first time the 2+ --> 0(1)+ transition in 80Zn was observed at 1492(1) keV. B(E2,2(1)+ --> 0(1)+) values were extracted for (74,76,78,80)Zn and compared to large scale shell model calculations. With only two protons outside the Z=28 proton core, 80Zn is the lightest N=50 isotone for which spectroscopic information has been obtained to date. Ab Initio Computation of the Longitudinal Response Function in Ca40

We present a consistent ab initio computation of the longitudinal response function ${R}_{L}$ in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ using the coupled-cluster and Lorentz integral transform methods starting from chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions. We validate our approach by comparing our results for ${R}_{L}$ in $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ and the Coulomb sum rule in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ against experimental data and other calculations. For ${R}_{L}$ in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ we obtain a very good agreement with experiment in the quasielastic peak up to intermediate momentum transfers, and we find that final state interactions are essential for an accurate description of the data. Coulomb effects in three-body reactions with two charged particles

We present the details of a novel approach to the treatment of Coulomb effects in atomic and nuclear reactions of the three-body type in which two of the particles are charged. Based on three-body integral equations the formalism allows the practical calculation of elastic, inelastic, rearrangement, and breakup processes with full inclusion of the Coulomb repulsion or attraction in a mathematically correct way. No restrictions need to be made concerning the form of the short-range interactions between the three pairs. A particular virtue of our method lies in the fact that it corroborates, and gives precise meaning to, the intuitively anticipated conception of how to describe such reactions.
Confirmation of the new isotope Pb178

The extremely neutron-deficient isotope $^{178}\mathrm{Pb}$ has been produced. The GREAT spectrometer at the focal plane position of the gas-filled separator RITU was used to study the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay of $^{178}\mathrm{Pb}$ and its $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay chain through $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\alpha}$ correlations. The $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay was measured to have an energy and half-life of ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$= 7610(30) keV and ${t}_{1/2}=0.{21}_{\ensuremath{-}0.08}^{+0.21}$ ms, respectively. Sub-Barrier Coulomb Excitation ofSn110and Its Implications for theSn100Shell Closure

The first excited 2(+) state of the unstable isotope Sn-110 has been studied in safe Coulomb excitation at 2.82 MeV/u using the MINIBALL array at the REX-ISOLDE post accelerator at CERN. This is the first measurement of the reduced transition probability of this state using this method for a neutron deficient Sn isotope. The strength of the approach lies in the excellent peak-to-background ratio that is achieved. The extracted reduced transition probability, B(E2 : 0(+) -> 2(+)) 0.220 +/- 0.022e(2) b(2), strengthens the observation of the evolution of the B(E2) values of neutron deficient Sn isotopes that was observed recently in intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation of Sn-108. Radiochemical study of the kinematics of multi-nucleon transfer reactions in 48Ca + 248Cm collisions 10% above the Coulomb barrier

Abstract The kinematics of multi-nucleon transfer reactions in 48Ca + 248Cm collisions at 262 MeV (center of target) was investigated by using a stacked-foil technique and radiochemical separations of trans-curium elements. Trans-curium isotopes were identified by α-particle spectroscopy. For Fm isotopes, by comparing the centroids of the measured post-neutron emission isotope distributions with the most probable primary mass number predicted by Volkov's generalized Q g g systematics, the missing mass (number of evaporated neutrons) is estimated. Regularities of Line Strengths in Spectra of NI, FI, and NeII

Recently experimentally determined individual (fine structure) line strengths for the spectra of NI, FI, and NeII are analysed, searching for regu- larities resulting from similarities in the structure of these species. Strengths of spectral lines of the prominent 3S-3p and 3p-3d transition arrays are investigated. The absolute scales of these experimentally derived data are based on independently determined lifetimes for excited levels of NI, FI, and NeII. The simple Coulomb approximation method was applied for calcula- tions of the matrix elements for the "jumping" electron in order to obtain an average trend in line strengths of the studied emitters. Shape Coexistence in the Neutron-Deficient Even-EvenHg182−188Isotopes Studied via Coulomb Excitation

Coulomb-excitation experiments to study electromagnetic properties of radioactive even-even Hg isotopes were performed with 2.85 MeV/nucleon mercury beams from REX-ISOLDE. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements that couple the ground state and low-lying excited states in Hg182-188 were extracted. Information on the deformation of the ground and the first excited 0(+) states was deduced using the quadrupole sum rules approach. Results show that the ground state is slightly deformed and of oblate nature, while a larger deformation for the excited 0(+) state was noted in Hg-182; 184. Effect of reactant spatial distribution in theA+B→0reaction kinetics in one dimension with Coulomb interaction

The effect of nonequilibrium charge screening in the kinetics of the one-dimensional, diffusion-controlled $A+B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ reaction between charged reactants in solids and liquids is studied. The incorrectness of the static, Debye-H\"uckel theory is shown. Our microscopic formalism is based on the Kirkwood superposition approximation for three-particle densities and the self-consistent treatment of the electrostatic interactions defined by the nonuniform spatial distribution of similar and dissimilar reactants treated in terms of the relevant joint correlation functions.
