Computer Simulations of I-Center Annealing in KCl and KBr Crystals. Theoretical Interpretation of Thermostimulated Experiments

1995

Results of computer simulations of the kinetics of correlated annealing of pairs of close α–I and F–I centers in KCI and KBr crystals, enhanced by I-center diffusion and Coulomb or elastic attractions, respectively, are presented. Special attention is paid to the conditions under which multi-stage annealing stages arise as it has been observed experimentally more than once. Our general conclusions are: (i) a weak elastic interaction affects the recombination kinetics and the survival probability even for relatively well-separated F–I pairs, the more so is true for the case of Coulomb attraction between charged α–I pairs; (ii) the multi-step (kink) structure arises only for close (typically,…

Theory for the stationary polariton response in the presence of vibrations

2019

We construct a model describing the response of a hybrid system where the electromagnetic field - in particular, surface plasmon polaritons - couples strongly with electronic excitations of atoms or molecules. Our approach is based on the input-output theory of quantum optics, and in particular it takes into account the thermal and quantum vibrations of the molecules. The latter is described within the $P(E)$ theory analogous to that used in the theory of dynamical Coulomb blockade. As a result, we are able to include the effect of the molecular Stokes shift on the strongly coupled response of the system. Our model then accounts for the asymmetric emission from upper and lower polariton mod…

High nuclearity mixed-valence magnetic clusters: theoretical study of the spin coupling in the C602− fulleride ion

1998

Abstract The problem of delocalization of a pair of electrons over the fullerene C 60 is considered, with the aim of elucidating the nature of the ground spin state, as well as the structure of the low-lying energy levels in this mixed-valence molecule C 60 2− . A model that considers the Coulomb interactions between the two extra electrons, as well as the two single-electron transfer processes involved in the electron delocalization, is developed. The influence of these electronic parameters on the spectrum of the low-lying energy levels is discussed. We find that the ground state is always a spin singlet, whatever the relative values of these parameters are.

Characterization of Emergence of the Coulomb Blockade in a Pearl-Like DNA-AuNP Assembly

2023

Due to its superior self-assembly properties and vast functionalization pos-sibilities DNA has long been one of the most promising candidates forfabrication of nanoscale electrical components using molecular buildingblocks. There exist already many demonstrations on optical devices based onorganizing metallic nanoparticles (NP) via DNA self-assembly, but despite thepromises only few DNA based electrical devices or studies have been realizedso far. Here we study the gold NP conjugated and metallized DNA TX-tile-structure, which we recently showed to exhibit the room temperature Coulombblockade, the pre-requisition for a single electron transistor. The properties ofthe obtained Coulomb blocka…

Beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic scattering of electrons from a spin-0 nucleus

2021

We study the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry (BNSSA) in high-energy elastic electron scattering from several spin-0 nuclei. Existing theoretical approaches work in the plane-wave formalism and predict the BNSSA to scale as $\ensuremath{\sim}A/Z$ with the atomic number $Z$ and nuclear mass number $A$. While this prediction holds for light and intermediate nuclei, a striking disagreement in both the sign and the magnitude of BNSSA was observed by the PREX collaboration for $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$, coined the ``PREX puzzle.'' To shed light on this disagreement, we go beyond the plane-wave approach which neglects Coulomb distortions known to be significant for heavy nuclei. We explicitly investig…

Three-body approach to proton-hydrogen charge exchange and elastic scattering

1999

The impact-parameter Faddeev approach to atomic three-body collisions which has been developed for, and successfully applied to, ion-atom scattering processes, has now been developed further by including, instead of the Coulomb potentials, the full two-particle off-shell Coulomb {ital T} matrices in all {open_quotes}triangle{close_quotes} contributions to the effective potentials. Results of calculations of proton-hydrogen collisions with only the ground states of the hydrogen retained in both the direct and the rearrangement channels are presented. Total and differential electron transfer, as well as differential elastic scattering cross sections, are obtained simultaneously in very good a…

The real part of the elastic-scattering amplitude at the $$S\bar ppS$$ and predictions at LHC and SSCand predictions at LHC and SSC

1994

A precise measurement of\(\bar pp\) elastic scattering in the Coulomb strong-interaction interference region was performed at the CERN\(S\bar ppS\) Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 541 GeV. The ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward elastic-scattering amplitude was found to be ρ=0.135±0.015. The slope of the exponential fall-off of the strong-interaction part was also measured to beb=15.5±0.1 GeV−2. Using this new result, an overall fit to the data on the total cross-section and on the real part for\(\bar pp\) and pp was performed using dispersion relations. Numerical predictions are presented for total cross-sections at LHC and SSC energies.

First Observation of an Attractive Interaction between a Proton and a Cascade Baryon

2019

Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the published article’s title, journal citation, and DOI. This Letter presents the first experimental observation of the attractive strong interaction between a proton and a multistrange baryon (hyperon) Ξ−. The result is extracted from two-particle correlations of combined p−Ξ−⊕¯p−¯Ξ+ pairs measured in p−Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02  TeV at the LHC with ALICE. The measured correlation function is compared with the prediction obtained assuming only an attractive Coulomb interaction and a stand…

Equilibrium swelling properties of polyampholytic hydrogels

1996

The role of counter ions and ion dissociation in establishing the equilibrium swelling of balanced and unbalanced polyampholytic hydrogels has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The swelling dependence on both the net charge offset and the external bath salt concentration has been examined using an acrylamide based polyampholytic hydrogels. By careful consideration of the swelling kinetics, we illustrate the effects of ion dissociation equilibria and counter ion shielding in polyampholytic hydrogels near their balance point where both polyelectrolyte and polyampholyte effects are present. The theory considers a Flory type swelling model where the Coulombic interactions betw…
