Obstacles Facing Smaller Business in Developing Countries
2003
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a central role in economic growth and poverty alleviation in developing countries and transition economies. Yet small and medium-scale enterprise may suffer from a number of disadvantages compared with larger firms. Market imperfections, notably those caused by underdeveloped financial and legal systems, typically constrain small firms and severely limit their ability to grow. Economies of scale and entry cost favor large firms, and large entrepreneurs usually wield more political influence. Thus government rules and regulations may also be biased in favor of large firms. To the extent that market and government failures are more prevalent in develop…
Foreign Direct Investments and Economic Growth in Central and Eastern Europe: A Panel-Based Analysis
2018
One of the most discussed issues related to foreign direct investments (FDI) refers to the impact they have on the economic and social welfare of a country. Moreover, if these effects are positive, the question is to what extent and by what instruments they can be enhanced by host country governments. In recent decades, the general political opinion on FDI changed, as they are rather understood as generating competitiveness and growth for host countries and less in terms of their negative effects on the economy. Our paper investigates the relationship between FDI flows and economic growth in countries from Central and Eastern Europe that are also EU members using the panel methodology and i…

P72 Lived experiences of midwives and traditional birth attendants caring for pregnant teenagers and teenage mothers: a phenomenological study
2020
Background Teenage mothers are confronted with the double task of passing through the teenage phase and, at the same time, familiarizing themselves with the requirements of motherhood. The characteristics connected with the teenage stage mostly affect the capability of teenage mothers to adapt to the role of being a first-time mother. The essential role of midwives is to provide care for women during pregnancy and motherhood, through coaching, reassurance, supervision and social support. Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) are also valued as essential actors in maternal health, providing social support and other antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care in developing countries. The study ai…
Tourism, Poverty Reduction and the Political Economy: Egyptian Perspectives on Tourism's Economic Benefits in a Semi-RentierState
2006
Abstract Tourism's potential as a tool for poverty reduction in developing countries is still part of an endless controversy. This paper argues that one of the main problems of the debate is rooted in a missing nexus between micro- and macro-perspectives. The result is a lack of an adequate consideration of local socio-political power structures and their influence on development issues. Macro-perspective paradigms – like dependency or neoclassic theory – tend to argue from a Euro-centric perspective and largely ignore local political conditions. On the other hand, micro-perspectives – like the alternative development paradigm – emphasize local conditions, but tend to underestimate superior…

Ongoing Economic Restructuring in the Wake of the Latest Economic Crisis: A Russian Perspective
2013
Abstract The latest economic crisis has brought into focus long-standing discussions regarding the role played by services in contemporary economies. Whether viewed as a support for the well-established manufacturing sector, or growth engine in its own right, the third economic sector has become a focus point for policy makers worldwide. The paper follows the effects of the crisis on the tertiarization process, with an emphasis on developing economies, where this phenomenon is barely coming of age. The research is centered on the IT market, as this is seen as a comprehensive measure of the maturity and sophistication of the services sector.
