Distance and coupling: analyzing the pressures of accounting change in a city

2008

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the accounting performance measurement (PM) change process in a Finnish city.Design/methodology/approachInterpretive case study. Data consisted of 16 semi‐structured interviews. Analysis was based on institutional theory, particularly on “new institutional sociology” (NIS) studies.FindingsBudgeting and accounting PM became coupled into action when various intertwined (mostly institutional) pressures affecting change converged. Perceived crises were found to accelerate accounting change by deinstitutionalization, i.e. by breaking (drastically) existing routines and myths. Further, accounting rules and routines changed somewhat independently. Fur…

Carbon–Phosphorus Coupling from C^N Cyclometalated Au III Complexes

2020

Abstract With the aim of exploiting new organometallic species for cross‐coupling reactions, we report here on the AuIII‐mediated Caryl−P bond formation occurring upon reaction of C^N cyclometalated AuIII complexes with phosphines. The [Au(C^N)Cl2] complex 1 featuring the bidentate 2‐benzoylpyridine (CCON) scaffold was found to react with PTA (1,3,5‐triaza‐7‐phosphaadamantane) under mild conditions, including in water, to afford the corresponding phosphonium 5 through C−P reductive elimination. A mechanism is proposed for the title reaction based on in situ 31P{1H} NMR and HR‐ESI‐MS analyses combined with DFT calculations. The C−P coupling has been generalized to other C^N cyclometalated Au…

Oxidative Coupling Reactions of 1,3-Diarylpropene Derivatives to Dibenzo[a,c]cycloheptenes by PIFA

2011

The oxidative cyclization reactions of a variety of α-benzyl-cinnamates can be selectively performed with hypervalent iodine as an oxidant. The dibenzo[a,c]cycloheptenes were isolated in up to 55 % yield. When an oxo substrate is applied, the yield was significantly increased. With this synthetic approach, a central intermediate for the synthesis of metasequirin-B was obtained in three steps from very simple starting materials. For this transformation, both aryl moieties have to be activated.

Observation of s-Channel Production of Single Top Quarks at the Tevatron

2014

We report the first observation of single-top-quark production in the s channel through the combination of the CDF and D0 measurements of the cross section in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data correspond to total integrated luminosities of up to 9.7fb-1 per experiment. The measured cross section is σs=1.29-0.24+0.26pb. The probability of observing a statistical fluctuation of the background to a cross section of the observed size or larger is 1.8×10-10, corresponding to a significance of 6.3 standard deviations for the presence of an s-channel contribution to the production of single-top quarks. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Energy management of a thermally coupled fuel cell system and metal hydride tank

2019

International audience; Being produced from renewable energy, hydrogen is one of the most efficient energy carriers of the future. Using metal alloys, hydrogen can be stored and transported at a low cost, in a safe and effective manner. However, most metals react with hydrogen to form a compound called metal hydride (MH). This reaction is an exothermic process, and as a result releases heat. With sufficient heat supply, hydrogen can be released from the as-formed metal hydride. In this work, we propose an integrated power system of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) together with a hydride tank designed for vehicle use. We investigate different aspects for developing metal hydride…

A coupled lossy local-mode theory description of a plasmonic tip

2012

International audience; We investigate power propagation in a metal-coated tapered optical fiber. We analyze in detail the conversion from the fiber core guided mode to a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) confined at the tip apex. To this aim, we adapt coupled local-mode theory to include lossy modes. Two distinct regimes are identified. In the case of thin metal coating, a strong coupling regime occurs between a core guided mode and a SPP with good conversion efficiency. In the case of thick metal coating, a very weak coupling occurs. Finally, energy confinement and the role of Joule losses are discussed in the near-infrared and visible ranges. Moreover, the coupled equations derived for loc…

Modulation of surface plasmon coupling-in by one-dimensional surface corrugation

2008

Surface plasmon-polaritons have recently attracted renewed interest in the scientific community for their potential in sub-wavelength optics, light generation and non-destructive sensing. Given that they cannot be directly excited by freely propagating light due to their intrinsical binding to the metal surface, the light-plasmon coupling efficiency becomes of crucial importance for the success of any plasmonic device. Here we present a comprehensive study on the modulation (enhancement or suppression) of such coupling efficiency by means of one-dimensional surface corrugation. Our approach is based on simple wave interference and enables us to make quantitative predictions which have been …
