Latvijas ģimenes paaudzēs, 2018
2019
Pētījums aptver visas vecuma grupas: gan jaunus cilvēkus patstāvīgās dzīves sākumā (no 18 gadu vecuma), gan pieredzes bagātus — citās vecuma grupās (līdz 79 gadu vecumam), sniedzot precīzu informāciju par cilvēka dzīves galvenajiem demogrāfiskajiem notikumiem un cikliem vairāku paaudžu dzīvē, sākot jau no 1950. gadu vidus.
Optimisation of photoluminescent painting treatments on different surface layers
2016
Improving drivers visibility in night time conditions is vital. Night-time visibility represents one of the most important features of road safety. Within such context, the use of photoluminescent road markings could represent an enhancement with regard to road safety. Consequently, the objective of the investigation here described was confined into the analysis of photoluminescent paints by referring to dense-graded and open-graded friction courses. Measurements, based on photometry technique, were carried out in the laboratory. Cores extracted from the surface layer of known pavements were used. Transitory effects (charge and discharge) and decay phenomena were investigated and modelled a…
Eponyms or Descriptive Equivalent Terms? The Question of Scientific Accuracy in Medical Discourse
2008
A large part of medical lexicon is made up of eponymous terms. These have often been an object of debate and disagreement among specialists and linguists. More precisely, some claim that eponyms should be maintained, while others are inclined to substitute them with descriptive equivalent terms. The aim of this work is to highlight the importance of linguistic accuracy in medical communication through the analysis of the main advantages and disadvantages involved in both the use of eponyms and descriptive terms. The work is divided into four main parts. The first part provides a classification of the various types of medical eponyms, according to the types of names they can include. The sec…
Non-standard Problems in an Ordinary Differential Equations Course
2018
International audience; We report first results from a teaching intervention in an ordinary differential equations (ODEs) course for engineering students. Our aim is to challenge traditional approaches to teaching of Existence and Uniqueness Theorems (EUTs) through the design of problems that students cannot solve by applying well-rehearsed techniques or familiar methods. We analyse how the use of nonstandard problems contributes to the development of students' conceptual understanding of EUTs and ODEs.

Work-loss years among people diagnosed with diabetes : a reappraisal from a life course perspective
2018
Aims Early exit from the workforce has been proposed to be one of the unfavorable consequences of diabetes. We examined whether early exit from the workforce differed between persons who were and were not diagnosed with diabetes during their work career. Methods The cohort included 12,726 individuals of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, born between 1934 and 1944. Using data from nationwide registers, the cohort was followed up from early adulthood until they transitioned into retirement or died. Work-loss years were estimated using the restricted mean work years method. Results During a follow-up of 382,328 person-years for men and 349 894 for women, 36.8% transitioned into old age pension …
Tensions and striving for coherence in an academic’s professional identity work
2017
The emergence of ‘new managerialism’ in academic institutions and professions has given rise to tensions between one’s professional self and work context. Such tensions often originate from a misalignment between institutional and personal values. This study builds on a dialogical approach to identity and discusses the role of inner tensions and conflicts in terms of making sense of one’s professional identity. These aspects are explored and exemplified by introducing a sample case of one individual student and university researcher/teacher, Anna, who participated in one-year Pedagogical Studies for Adult Educators. Leaning on the narratives of Anna’s learning diaries and a later interview,…
Exploring the Ideal of Dialogue by Taking into Account Both an Observed Interaction Session and the Participants’ Views on the Interaction

The participants were the pupil, the mother and father, the special needs teacher, the school counsellor, the school psychology counsellor and the special needs co…

Digital technologies are an inherent part of consumer environments today. This dissertation investigates older adults’ usage of digital technologies by focusing on the role of age and life course stage in digital consumption in Finland. The dissertation applies theories of technology adoption and use, generations, and life course to examine older adults as digital consumers, the interrelationship between consumption and digital technologies and the effects of age and life course stage on digital consumption. The study utilises both quantitative and qualitative data from five (5) data sets. The results reveal that between the years 1999 and 2014, older adults reported more ecological and les…
