Etnisyyden rakentuminen kahden saamelaismuseon perusnäyttelyissä
2015
This study examines the construction of ethnicity in the permanent exhibitions of two museums: Siida, the National Museum of the Finnish Sámi and the Nature Centre of Metsähallitus, and Ájtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sámi Museum. The study is motivated by three research questions: What kind of ethnic categories and boundaries do the exhibitions create? How is Sámi ethnicity defined by displaying cultural features? How do the exhibitions depict relationships between the Sámi and other ethnicities, governmental power, the ‘Sámi area’, and nature? The exhibitions are examined in the context of the contemporary public discussion about Sámi ethnicity; the study aims to explain how the two museu…
Konkari kaapissa : ideaaliopiskelija työkokemusta omaavien varhaiskasvatuksen opettajaopiskelijoiden diskursseissa
2023
Opiskelijat, joilla on aikaisempaa varhaiskasvatuksen alan työkokemusta, ovat olleet viime vuosina kasvava joukko varhaiskasvatuksen yliopistokoulutuksessa. Aikaisempi tutkimus on antanut viitteitä, että kyseisen opiskelijaryhmän odotukset opiskelulta ja toiminta opettajankoulutuksen kannalta keskeisissä opetusharjoitteluissa voivat poiketa opiskelijoista, jotka edustavat traditionaalista yliopisto-opiskelijan normia. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin aikaisempaa varhaiskasvatuksen alan työkokemusta omaavien varhaiskasvatuksen opettajaopiskelijoiden tuottamia diskursiivisia subjektipositioita opetusharjoittelun kontekstissa. Haastatteluaineisto (n = 12, haastatteluiden kesto 10 h 13 min) an…
Leadership practices in relation to men's work-family balance in Finnish organizations
2020
Leadership practices in organizations play an important role in shaping the conditions for employees’ work-family balance. Previous research on the topic has mainly focused on women; fathers are said to receive little support from leadership for combining work and family. In this study, the focus is on men working in six Finnish organizations representing male-dominated, female-dominated and gender-balanced organizations. Although Finland is considered a frontrunner in gender equality globally, Finnish women still carry the main responsibility for housework and child-care. Through a discursive approach, we seek to answer the following research question: What kind of discourses do working me…
Evolving Management Ideas
2019
This chapter reviews the different conceptualizations of ‘the’ historical development of management ideas. It focuses on three approaches to the evolution of research on management ideas: (1) mainstream, (2) embedded, and (3) critical alternatives. The mainstream is the most dominant approach, both in research and in textbooks of management, while the embedded approach is increasingly popular among institutionally oriented researchers. A key suggestion is that it is also important to find and follow less researched avenues in the evolution of management ideas, such as the critical alternatives approach, drawing on forgotten and marginalized discourses. The authors explicate limitations and …

Designing education democratically through deliberative crowdsourcing : the case of the Finnish curriculum for basic education
2020
In Finland, curriculum design is allegedly carried out through a deliberative process that involves various stakeholders, interest groups, experts and ordinary citizens. To facilitate participation in curriculum design, online crowdsourcing has been applied. The objective of this study is to explore to what extent the design process of the latest Finnish national curriculum for mathematics was open, democratic and deliberative. The theoretical framework of the study is the theory of democratic will-formation of the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas. The comments given on the early version of the core curriculum of mathematics were analysed using directed content analysis, in which the abov…
Up with ecology, down with economy? : The consolidation of the idea of climate change mitigation in the global public sphere
2018
Building on theories of valuation and evaluation, we develop an analytical framework that outlines six elements of the process of consolidation of an idea in the public sphere. We then use the framework to analyse the process of consolidation of the idea of climate change mitigation between 1997 and 2013, focusing on the interplay between ecological and economic evaluations. Our content analysis of 1274 articles in leading newspapers in five countries around the globe shows that (1) ecological arguments increase over time, (2) economic arguments decrease over time, (3) the visibility of environmental nongovernmental organizations as carriers of ecological ideas increases over time, (4) the …
The People’s Assembly: Testing the Collaborative (e)-Democracy
2020
This paper aims to critically analyse the Estonian People’s Assembly (EPA), a crowdsourcing initiative carried out from 2013 to 2014. During the project, citizens could participate in decision-making and make proposals for laws and policies on a dedicated web-platform. Additionally, some people were invited for a traditional off-line debate. In that way, the project combined virtual communication tools with traditional discussion to apply the principles of collaborative e-democracy, in which governmental stakeholders and non-governmental stakeholders (such as local communities) join in a deliberative debate. The purpose of this paper is to observe, both, gains and problems of this crowdsour…

"It is time for the British people to have their say" : The Daily Mail and the Guardian on Brexit from 2013 to 2016
2017
Yhdistyneiden kuningaskuntien kansanäänestys Euroopan Unionista lähtemiseksi kesäkuussa 2016 oli monella tavalla järisyttävä, jopa odottamaton, tapahtuma. Yleisenä oletuksena oli, että vuoden 1975 kansanäänestyksen tulos toistuisi ja Yhdistyneet kuningaskunnat pysyisivät edelleen Euroopan Unionin jäsenmaana maassa pitkään vallinneesta euroskeptisyydestä huolimatta. Tämän tutkielman tarkoitus on tarkastella, miten Brexitin keskustelluimmat teemat kuten maahanmuutto, talous ja identiteetti kehittyivät vuosina 2013-2016 lehdissä the Daily Mail ja the Guardian sekä miten nämä teemat vaikuttivat Brexitin kokonaiskuvaan lehdissä. Tarkastelun kohteena on myös, miten nämä lehdet vaikuttivat lukijoi…
