Perspectives in Medical English
2014
This volume explores the Italian situation of English for Specific Purposes as employed in a highly specialized and exclusive scientific-professional domain: medicine. The papers collected here deal with both the research and the didactics of English for Medical Purposes (EMP), seen as integrated aspects of the same linguistic phenomenon. The first part outlines the current status of EMP research and didactics in Italy, with reflections on the development and usage of EMP (Kim Grego, Paola Baseotto, Roberta Mullini, Elisabetta Lonati, Marianna L. Zummo and Tatiana Canziani). The second part offers insights into the present and short-term future of Englishteaching in medicine and health-rela…
Discurso de especialidad, discurso especializado o discurso situado?
2018
In a representative problematic, the discourse reflects the behaviour, which integrant may have in a social interaction. The discourse analyses of specific professional communicative situations require observing the linguistic behaviour of the participant from empiric and authentic data (Charaudeau, 2009: 50). This study alludes to the description of specific communicative situations and to the discourse adaptation of the specialized revues produced in a socio-professional context, dealing with the descriptors of selected products, in order to compare the representations of the cocoa and wine descriptions. The suggested lexicographic analysis first explores the different way of defining the…

Early-Life Factors as Predictors of Age-Associated Deficit Accumulation Across 17 Years From Midlife Into Old Age
2022
Abstract Background Early-life exposures have been associated with the risk of frailty in old age. We investigated whether early-life exposures predict the level and rate of change in a frailty index (FI) from midlife into old age. Methods A linear mixed model analysis was performed using data from 3 measurement occasions over 17 years in participants from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study (n = 2 000) aged 57–84 years. A 41-item FI was calculated on each occasion. Information on birth size, maternal body mass index (BMI), growth in infancy and childhood, childhood socioeconomic status (SES), and early-life stress (wartime separation from both parents) was obtained from registers and health ca…
CLIL-opetuksen merkitys elämänkulkujen rakentajana : kahden entisen oppilaan pohdintoja
2017
This article discusses the significance of CLIL education from the students’ perspective. Two former CLIL students, who received extensive English CLIL education in primary school in 1990s, were interviewed during the summer 2016. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the memories they had of CLIL and how they perceived its influence on their life courses. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis with a theory-oriented framework. CLIL education had been a highly positive experience to both and they believed it had influenced their life courses pervasively. Due to CLIL, English had become an inherent part of their lives. CLIL had guided their professional choices and…

Mikä nuorta liikuttaa? : tutkimus liikuntatottumusten rakentumisesta lapsesta nuoreksi aikuiseksi
2016
Tutkimuksessa kuvataan lapsena liikunta-aktiivisuudeltaan erilaisten nuorten liikuntatottumusten rakentumista lapsesta nuoreksi aikuiseksi.
Early life determinants of frailty in old age : the Helsinki Birth Cohort Stud
2018
Background there is evidence suggesting that several chronic diseases have their origins in utero and that development taking place during sensitive periods may affect the aging process. We investigated whether early life determinants would be associated with frailty in old age. Methods at a mean age of 71 years, 1,078 participants belonging to the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study were assessed for frailty according to the Fried frailty criteria. Early life measurements (birth weight, length, mother body mass index [BMI] and parity) were obtained from birth, child welfare and school health records. Multinomial regression analysis was used to assess the association between early life determinants…
