OBJECTIVE: C1 inhibitor concentrate is regarded as effective and safe in treating acute attacks of hereditary angioedema caused by C1 inhibitor deficiency. This study investigated the course of disease in 3 women treated frequently with C1 inhibitor concentrate. METHODS: Three women are described who received C1 inhibitor concentrate for the treatment of acute attacks of hereditary angioedema and experienced an increase in the frequency of attacks during that treatment period. In a control group of 24 patients aged more than 60 years with hereditary angioedema, the natural course of disease was determined. Stress and Recovery Responses during a 105-day Ground-based Space Simulation

The present study analysed the time course of the psychological process of stress and recovery in six healthy male volunteers during the Mars 105 experimentation, a 105-day ground-based space analogue. The multidimensional assessment of stress and recovery responses showed that stress levels decreased significantly throughout the 105-day isolated and confined extreme (ICE) experiment, especially on its social dimension. In line with previous studies, Fatigue showed a global and progressive reduction. In this prospective study 101 sonographic examinations of superior mesenteric artery blood flow velocities, indices and blood flow volume were consecutively performed in 41 newborn to diagnose necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). Intramural and portal venous gas was also estimated. The artifacts of air in the AMS and the portal system were examined in an experimental study. The results of sonography and abdominal radiography were equivalent in the case of definitely established NEC, portal venous gas being more sensitive to detection by sonography. A cross-sectional seroepidemiologic study was carried out on household contacts and sexual partners of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody-positive intravenous drug abusers in Palermo, Italy, in 1985 to evaluate factors that influenced HIV transmission. A total of 43 index cases, 36 spouses or heterosexual partners, 28 children, and 55 adult household members were enrolled. None of the household members without sexual contact, who had shared items and facilities and had interacted with the index cases, contracted HIV infection. Participants were 127 men and 167 women aged 75 years randomly drawn from the population register as part of the AGNES study. 62 patients (14 boys, 48 girls) representing 85 refluxive renal units (Grade 2-4) were investigated after successful operation for the development of further urinary tract infections (UTI) and renal scars (RS). The mean follow-up was 9.3 years. With the exception of one boy, none of the male patients developed any UTI or new RS. A similar result was obtained for about 45% of the girls. These two groups of patients presented with high-grade reflux before surgery. The remaining female patients (about 55%), however, presenting with lower-grade reflux before surgical treatment, developed further UTI as well as new RS despite surgical correction of their reflux.
