Towards an Economy of Encounters? : A critical study of affectual assemblages in coworking

Abstract Coworking spaces have been established in great numbers around the globe over the past 10 years. Previous studies on coworking spaces argue that these spaces are designed to enable serendipitous encounters. Here we introduce the concept of an economy of encounters, arguing that both intended and unintended encounters have become a form of production in the knowledge-based new economy. This paper draws upon the critical analysis of three case studies of different coworking settings − two open coworking spaces and a corporate coworking office. Coworking and its merits and benefits have been under heavy scholarly investigation. Also in practice, the phenomenon with its characteristics and manifestations becomes increasingly relevant on many levels and for many different types of people and organizations. But why is that so, and how are the research activities distributed between researchers, countries, and journals? To answer these questions, we first analyzed existing literature and extracted the focal points of the respective approaches. Šajā pētījumā ar etnogrāfisku metožu palīdzību tiek izzināts, kā kļūšana par coworking kopienas locekli ietekmē pašnodarbināto darba pieredzi un identitāti, kā arī, kā kopienas veidošanās pētītajā coworking vietā ietekmē coworking praksi. Pētītajā coworking vietā tiek veicināta kopienas izveide, kuras rezultātā pašnodarbinātie veido profesionālas sadarbības, dalās zināšanās un mācās viens no otra.
