Catalytic Enantioselective Friedel–Crafts Reactions of Naphthols and Electron-Rich Phenols

The enantioselective Friedel–Crafts reaction is a powerful tool for the construction of benzylic stereocenters in a stereodefined manner. Significant advances have already been achieved with heteroarenes such as indoles and pyrroles; however, the reaction with homoarenes is less developed. Characterization of some isomeric benzophenones by their mass spectra

Benzophenones have been described to undergo characteristic α-cleavage and rearrangement processes upon mass spectrometric fragmentation. Recently two series of new and isomeric benzophenones have been prepared from phenylbenzoates by Fries rearrangement or directly by Friedel Crafts acylation. It is shown that the above mentioned diagnostic fragmentation processes can be used to characterize the resulting isomeric ortho or para hydroxy and ortho or para methoxy benzophenones unambigously.

[EN] Chiral complexes of BINOL-based ligands with zirconium tert-butoxide catalyze the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of indoles with beta-trifluoromethyl-alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones to give functionalized indoles with an asymmetric tertiary carbon center attached to a trifluoromethyl group. The reaction can be applied to a large number of substituted alpha-trifluoromethyl enones and substituted indoles. The expected products were obtained with good yields and ees of up to 99%.

The Bondwoman’s Narrative is a novel that functions as a story made up from Hannah Crafts’s experiences as a bondwoman and thus merges fact and fiction giving a thoroughly new account of slavery both committed to reality and fiction. Following and taking over the Gothic literary genre that spread in Europe as a reaction toward the Romantic spirit, Crafts uses it to denounce the degrading slavery system and, mainly, to scathingly attack the patriarchal roots that stigmatize black women as the ultimate victims. Enantioselective Friedel-Crafts reaction of hydroxyarenes with nitroenynes to access chiral heterocycles via sequential catalysis

Naphthols, hydroxyindoles and an activated phenol are reacted with differently substituted (E)-nitrobut-1-en-3-ynes using the commercially available Rawal's chiral squaramide. The corresponding β-nitroalkynes were obtained with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Moreover, dihydronaphthofurans can be accessed via silver catalysed cyclization in a tandem one-pot procedure, with high preservation of the optical purity.
