Cerebral blood flow and cerebral death

1969

At present the diagnosis of cerebral death is based on the absence of manifestations of cerebral function (deep coma, wide pupils, absence of reflexes and spontaneous respiration, isoelectric EEG, etc.) during a variable period of time. However, the absence of vital signs of an organ, even for prolonged periods, is no proof of its death. The death of an organ can only be considered as proved by the demonstration that this organ has remained completely deprived of its blood flow during a period of time that surpasses its ability to survive circulatory arrest. In the case of the brain, the permanent absence of clearance of a radioactive tracer deposed within the brain is considered to demonst…

The Brain Electrophysiological recording & STimulation (BEST) toolbox

2021

Abstract Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) experiments involve many recurring procedures that are not sufficiently standardized in the community. Given the diversity in experimental design and experience of the investigators, automated but yet flexible data collection and analysis tools are needed to increase objectivity, reliability, and reproducibility of NIBS experiments. The B rain E lectrophysiological recording and ST imulation (BEST) Toolbox is a MATLAB-based, open-source software with graphical user interface that allows users to design, run, and share freely configurable multi-protocol, multi-session NIBS studies, including transcranial magnetic, electric, and ultrasound stimul…

A questionnaire to collect unintended effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation: A consensus based approach

2022

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been widely used in both clinical and research practice. However, TMS might induce unintended sensations and undesired effects as well as serious adverse effects. To date, no shared forms are available to report such unintended effects. This study aimed at developing a questionnaire enabling reporting of TMS unintended effects. A Delphi procedure was applied which allowed consensus among TMS experts. A steering committee nominated a number of experts to be involved in the Delphi procedure. Three rounds were conducted before reaching a consen-sus. Afterwards, the questionnaire was publicized on the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiolo…

Altérations neuromusculaires induites par des exercices excentriques et concentriques fatigants : emphase sur le pédalage des membres inférieurs

2021

The influence of dynamic contraction type (concentric or eccentric) on performance fatigability and associated neuromuscular alterations is partly unknown. Contraction type interacts with other exercise features such as intensity (maximal; submaximal) or modality (single-joint; locomotor). Thus, we compared eccentric with concentric exercises of similar characteristics across three experimental studies. We showed that, for the completion of a given amount of mechanical work, both contraction types impaired maximal voluntary isometric torque similarly. However, neuromuscular impairments depended on exercise features. In study 1, maximal single-joint eccentric contractions affected neural but…

Mutation Analysis of Core Binding Factor A1 in Patients with Cleidocranial Dysplasia

1999

SummaryCleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a dominantly inherited disorder characterized by patent fontanelles, wide cranial sutures, hypoplasia of clavicles, short stature, supernumerary teeth, and other skeletal anomalies. We recently demonstrated that mutations in the transcription factor CBFA1, on chromosome 6p21, are associated with CCD. We have now analyzed the CBFA1 gene in 42 unrelated patients with CCD. In 18 patients, mutations were detected in the coding region of the CBFA1 gene, including 8 frameshift, 2 nonsense, and 9 missense mutations, as well as 2 novel polymorphisms. A cluster of missense mutations at arginine 225 (R225) identifies this residue as crucial for CBFA1 function. …

Isolated non-compaction of the myocardium as a cause of coronary and cerebral embolic events in the same patient.

2009

A 44-year-old woman with a history of smoking and previous cerebral thrombo-embolism presented to the emergency department with prolonged chest pain and ECG changes showing an acute anterior myocardial infarction. She was referred to the cath-lab for primary angioplasty. Coronary angiography showed a thrombotic occlusion at the origin of first diagonal …

Modulation of excitatory and inhibitory circuits for visual awareness in the human right parietal cortex.

2005

The balance of specific patterns of excitation and inhibition in critical regions of both hemispheres could be relevant in orienting attention over the extrapersonal space. In the present study a group of normal subjects had to detect small rectangular stimuli presented briefly on a computer screen in three different conditions: unilateral presentation either to left or right visual periphery or bilateral simultaneous presentation. Paired transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), was applied over the right parietal cortex 150 ms after the presentation of the visual stimuli with different inter-stimulus intervals (ISIs: 1, 3,5 and 10 ms). When paired TMS was applied 150 ms, but not 100 ms, af…
