Evaluation of changes in salivary composition in renal failure patients before and after hemodialysis

2017

Background Saliva plays a major role in preserving the integrity of oral tissues. The oral health of renal failure patients could be negatively affected by the underlying pathology, the dialysis treatment, or an altered salivary composition. Major systemic changes occur during hemodialysis (HD), which could affect the flow rate and biochemical composition of saliva. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of HD on the salivary flow rate, pH and biochemical composition before and after completion of a dialysis session. Material and methods Thirty Renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria set forth for the s…

Preliminary Estimation of Deoxynivalenol Excretion through a 24 h Pilot Study

2015

A duplicate diet study was designed to explore the occurrence of 15 Fusarium mycotoxins in the 24 h-diet consumed by one volunteer as well as the levels of mycotoxins in his 24 h-collected urine. The employed methodology involved solvent extraction at high ionic strength followed by dispersive solid phase extraction and gas chromatography determination coupled to mass spectrometry in tandem. Satisfactory results in method performance were achieved. The method"s accuracy was in a range of 68%108%, with intra-day relative standard deviation and inter-day relative standard deviation lower than 12% and 15%, respectively. The limits of quantitation ranged from 0.1 to 8 μg/Kg. The matrix effect w…

Effect of two antihypertensive combinations on metabolic control in type-2 diabetic hypertensive patients with albuminuria: a randomised, double-blin…

2001

The objective of this study was to compare, at equal blood pressure (BP) reduction, the effect of two different combinations on metabolic control and albuminuria in type 2 diabetic hypertensive patients with albuminuria. This was a prospective, randomised, double-blind, parallel, controlled trial carried out in 11 Spanish hospitals. A total of 103 type 2 diabetic patients with stable albuminuria and BP not controlled on monotherapy were randomised of which 93 finished the study. After a 4-week single-blind placebo period, patients were randomised to verapamil SR/trandolapril 180/2 mg (VT) or to enalapril/hydroclorothiazide 20/12.5 mg (EH). Treatment duration was 6 months. The main outcome m…

P1055REMARKABLE REMOVALS OF BETA-2-MICROGLOBULIN AND PHOSPHATE WITH SHORT-DAILY HOME HEMODIALYSIS USING LOW DIALYSATE FLOW RATE

2020

Abstract Background and Aims Short-daily hemodialysis (HD) with low-dialysate volume is an appealing portable dialysis approach for home use. Although this type of HD has proved being effective for the volume control and the clearance of low molecular-weight uremic toxins, limited data are available on the impact on the removal rates of other uremic toxins like β2-microglobulin (β2M) or phosphate (P), whose clearance is limited by sequestration into compartments, poor diffusion, high time-dependency, or protein binding. We evaluated the impact of short-daily HD with slow dialysate flow rate on the removal of solutes of different molecular weights and distribution volumes. Method Single-sess…

P1025HISTOLOGICAL AND CLINICAL FINDINGS IN ADULT AUTOPSIES OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS WITH OR WITHOUT DIABETIC KIDNEY DISEASE

2020

Abstract Background and Aims Few studies have analyzed early lesions of diabetic nephropathy (DN) in those patients who do not have clinical signs of this involvement, since the indication of renal biopsy is usually performed in patients with significant renal manifestations. The aim of the study was to analyze renal histological lesions from autopsies of diabetic patients with or without clinical expression of DN. Thus, we analyze their correlation according to the presence or absence of proteinuria (albumin/creatinine to ratio > 300). Autopsies from non-diabetic patients was used as a control group. Method Kidneys from autopsies of 21 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) an…

Prenatal arsenic exposure, arsenic methylation efficiency, and neuropsychological development among preschool children in a Spanish birth cohort.

2022

Abstract Background Prenatal arsenic (As) exposure could negatively affect child neuropsychological development, but the current evidence is inconclusive. Objectives To explore the relationship between prenatal urinary total As (TAs) concentrations, the As species and the methylation efficiency, and child neuropsychological development in a Spanish birth cohort. We also studied the effect modification produced by sex and several nutrients and elements. Materials and methods Study subjects were 807 mother–child pairs participating in the INMA (Childhood and Environment) Project. Urinary TAs and its metabolites, monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), inorganic As (iAs) and …

Angiotensin II Type 1 Receptor Antibodies Are Higher in Lupus Nephritis and Vasculitis than Other Glomerulonephritis Patients

2022

AbstractAngiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) antibodies are considered non-HLA (human leukocyte antigen) antibodies connected with humoral rejection after kidney transplantation. The role of AT1R antibodies in the pathogenesis of glomerular diseases and systemic vasculitis is unknown. We assessed the level of AT1R antibodies in 136 patients with different types of glomerulonephritis and systemic vasculitis and we observed kidney function and proteinuria, serum albumin and total protein levels for 2 years. The mean levels of AT1R antibodies were the following: 6.00 ± 1.31 U/ml in patients with membranous nephropathy (n = 18), 5.67 ± 1.31 U/ml with focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (n =…

Anti-ETAR and suPAR as markers of disease activity in renal ANCA-associated vasculitis.

2020

Purpose In anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV), there is a lack of reliable biomarkers of disease activity. The aim of the study was to evaluate soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and anti-endothelin-1 type A receptor (anti-ETAR) antibodies levels in active phase and remission of AAV. Patients and methods We enrolled 60 patients (median age 63.0 years) with renal AAV into this study. Plasma suPAR, urine suPAR (expressed as urine suPAR/creatinine ratio) and serum anti-ETAR antibodies were assayed by ELISA. Disease activity was assessed using Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVAS) and patients were divided into 2 subgroups based o…

Hepatitis B vaccination and interleukin 2 receptor expression in chronic renal failure

1990

Hepatitis B vaccination and interleukin-2 receptor expression in chronic renal failure. Only 50 to 60% of dialysis patients develop anti-HBs antibodies following hepatitis b vaccination. The nonre-sponder state correlates with impaired monocyte function, decreased interleukin-2 (IL-2) production of T cells, and an upregulation of the IL-2 receptor system. In the present study we examined anti-HBs production after hepatitis B vaccination and the in vitro expression of IL-2 receptors in nondialyzed patients with various degrees of chronic renal failure. Forty-four patients with impaired renal function were immunized with 20 µg recombinant hepatitis B vaccine and boostered after one and six mo…

Left Atrial Remodeling and Brain Natriuretic Peptide Levels Variation after Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion

2021

Background: Few data are available about brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) variation and left atrial remodeling after the left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) technique. Methods: Prospective study included all consecutive patients successfully implanted with an LAAO device. Contrast-enhanced cardiac computed tomography (CT) was performed before and 6 weeks after the procedure with reverse left atrial remodeling defined by an increase in LA volume &gt
