Evaluation of the temperature effect on the fractional linear viscoelastic model for an epoxy resin

2016

The paper deals with the evolution of the parameters of a fractional model for different values of temperature. An experimental campaign has been performed on epoxy resin at different levels of temperature. It is shown that epoxy resin is very sensitive to the temperature.

Design and use of a Fatigue Test Machine in Plane Bending for Composite Specimens and Bonded Joints

2011

Polymeric and composites materials are increasingly used in industry as structural parts, so that specific information on their mechanical properties "at long term" (creep, relaxation, fatigue) are requested. The design and implementation of these components also requires that they are permanently connected together to perform certain functions. The use of adhesives in structural joints has increased over recent years thanks to the continuous development by companies which provide the market with adhesive having better and better mechanical properties. The main areas relate to the aerospace, aeronautical and automotive industries, where requirements are required for lightness and reliabilit…

Effects of Moisture and Stresses on the Structure and Properties of Polyester Resin

2004

The results of a complex study of structural changes in a cured Norpol 440 polyester resin under the action of damp environment and mechanical loading are presented. A considerable effect of absorbed moisture on the structure and some characteristics of the material is revealed by using thermophysical methods and X-ray diffractometry. The joint effect of moisture and mechanical stress is estimated by investigating the creep in stationary and nonstationary moisture conditions. The anisotropy of the material structure formed during creep is evaluated from the results of dilatometric measurements. It is found that the degree of anisotropy of the material after creep accompanied by moisture sor…

Effect of moisture on elastic and viscoelastic properties of epoxy and epoxy-based carbon fibre reinforced plastic filled with multiwall carbon nanot…

2016

Abstract In this study, we investigated the peculiarities of moisture absorption and moisture-induced effects on the elastic and viscoelastic flexural properties of epoxy resin and carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) filled with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Short-term cyclic creep-recovery tests of moistened epoxy and CFRP filled with MWCNTs revealed improvements in creep resistance for both materials. The addition of MWCNTs to the epoxy resin suppressed the moisture absorption by the material, causing a reduction in the diffusion coefficient by 31% and equilibrium moisture content by 15%. The addition of MWCNTs reduced the flexural strength of moistened epoxy and CFRP samples by…

A method for determination of time- and temperature-dependences of stress threshold of linear-nonlinear viscoelastic transition: Energy-Based Approach

2011

A methodology for determination of time- and temperature-dependences of stress threshold of linear–nonlinear viscoelastic transition is proposed and validated by example of uniaxial creep of epoxy resin. Energy approach is applied for characterization of the region of linear viscoelasticity (LVE) and the threshold of LVE is given in the stress–strain representation as the master curve independent of time and temperature. Time- and temperature-dependences of the stress threshold are calculated by extending LVE theory and time–temperature superposition principles (TTSP) to the energy relations. Reasonable agreement between experimental data and calculations is obtained. It is shown that numbe…

1980

Compression creep and stress-relaxation tests have been performed on PMMA at several deformations after the sample yielding. At large loading rates, the behaviour observed was found significantly affected by the temperature rise due to the plastic deformation. Creep and stress-relaxation data taken holding the samples at constant temperature after the material loading could be collected into single curves by means of a time shift factor proportional to the loading rate.

Application of time-temperature superposition to energy limit of linear viscoelastic behavior

2009

The energy approach for evaluation of the limits of linear viscoelastic (LVE) behavior is considered. The approach of Foux and Bruller based on the Reiner-Weissenberg dynamic theory of strength is developed for the temperature effect. Value of the stored energy at the limit of LVE is considered as the material characteristic independent on loading conditions and temperature. Time–temperature superposition principle is extended for the energy calculations. Curves of the stored energy calculated for different temperatures are shifted to each other in the logarithmic time axes similarly as creep compliance and relaxation modulus curves in creep and tension tests, respectively. Temperature is c…

Comprehensive Study on the Performance of Waste HDPE and LDPE Modified Asphalt Binders for Construction of Asphalt Pavements Application

2022

This research is aimed at investigating the mechanical behavior of the bitumen by the addition of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) obtained from waste plastic bottles and bags. Polymers (HDPE and LDPE) with percentages of 0%, 2%, 4%, and 6% in shredded form by weight of bitumen were used to evaluate the spectroscopic, structural, morphological, and rheological properties of polymer-modified binders. The rheological properties for different factors; viscosity (ἠ) from Rotational Viscometer (RV), rutting factor G*/Sin (δ), fatigue characteristics G*. Sin (δ), for the modified binder from dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), Short and long-term a…

In-line monitoring of the photooxidation behaviour of a PP/clay nanocomposite through creep measurements

2016

Abstract The photooxidation behaviour of a polypropylene/organomodified clay nanocomposite sample has been monitored by means of a new apparatus through the record of the creep curves measured while the sample is subjected to the contemporary action of temperature, tensile strength and UV radiation. The creep curves of the irradiated samples are higher than those of the non-irradiated samples and the curves diverge when the molecular weight begins to decrease because of the degradation. At the same the formation of carbonyl groups is observed. The creep curves of the non-irradiated and irradiated samples give, then, an immediate evaluation of the begin and of the development of the photooxi…
